Yankees get Granderson. Good deal for the Yankees.

This is another head scratcher for me. The Yankees did get a good player in the deal and someone who will be valuable for them moving forward.

What the heck is Detroit doing? I like the Scherzer move, to be honest, but beyond that it seems like an unimpressive haul for two of your best younger players.

I'm not sure how much this changes how good the Yankees are... they're still really good.

If I'm a Yankee fan then I'd be happy to get this move done.

This deal looks better and better every time I look at it.

With CC, AJ, Pettitte, Joba, Hughes, there was no room for Kennedy. Coke is a mediocre reliever. Austin Jackson is a hyped up prospect who may or not be the real deal.

In return, the Yankees got a 30 homerun hitter who is entering his prime. There is nothing not to like about this deal from a Yankee fan's standpoint.

Not to mention, the salary for Granderson is under $6 million a year. This puts the Yankees in a very strong position. They can keep Melky and sign Matsui to play DH. They can trade Melky and sign Damon.

This deal pretty much guarantees that one of Damon or Matsui is gone. The question is...which one?

I'm with you, initially I wasn't really feeling it, but the more I think about it and the more I look at it the more I love it.

not including Dunn makes this deal more palatable since Dunn now slots in as the second lefty in the pen. I dont mind giving up on Coke at all since he was looking at a DFA if he didnt make the team. Jackson may or may not become better than Granderson. If Granderson starts to hit lefties to the tune of a .700OPS, then I agree, this is a steal. I am kinda shocked that NY gave away Kennedy as a throw-in. All this time spent trying to recoup his stock and he still goes as a tertiary piece. This is still a lot of talent going Detroit's way, and like I have told Gom many times before, watch Kennedy become a good starter in the desert.

I hope he does become a good starter in the desert. He wasn't one here, that's for sure.

I looked up the Yankees. UZR was basically useless for my team. It was no more accurate than a flip of the coin would have been. I will look into RF/G, because that seemed to jive with my opinions of the players.

So you're saying the stat is only good for OFers? LOL!

"Hey guys...I developed this cool formula for valuing defense!"

"Great! What is it? How does it work?"

"Well..it's only good for OFers..and it doesn't work that well on it's own, you have to use it with RF/G..and it shows incredible variance from year to year! It's still a formula though!"

"Yay...send it to Dipre!"

End of story.

A civil conversation with you is impossible. Pretty sure you're really a 12-year-old.

We need to keep one spot open for the Bruney deal, so it's only two. You know what?

I'd like to see the Yankees bring back Shelley Duncan to platoon with Granderson.

Really? I wouldn't bring Shelley back on more than a Minor League deal. I would rather have Nady than Duncan.

The rumor is that NY struck a deal with Washington that is a bit sneaky. Washington is going to select one of NY's players and then return them to NY thereby circumventing the rules and allowing the Yanks to keep a player off the 40 man for another season. Its an interesting idea. There are three guys who fit that category. George Kontos being one, since he's a post TJS player, he can be stashed on the 60 day DL by any team that so chooses. Kanekoa Texeira is another, a swing guy with a good sinker/slider combo that is being considered a high likelihood to be taken in the Rule V. And the other is Grant Duff, who had been throwing as high as 99mph as the season ended, but inconsistencies in both control and secondary stuff made him too unreliable to place on the 40 man. Its an interesting idea. That being said, I'd much rather take the best talent available and then go from there

 The Yankees closed the deal before the Tigers realized that they got fleeced. Good work by them. Theo needs to step up his game.

Where have you heard this? Or are you just pulling it out of nowhere?

It's a reasonable idea, but I'm surprised. I figured they had someone in mind from another organization.

Yet this is the type of deal that the Sox just wouldn't be interested in. They don't have a hole for Granderson and they don't want to give up a top prospect to get him.

Different teams, different needs, etc.,

Every time the Yankees make some sort of big splash I get this twisted angry feeling in my stomach. Anyone else get that. I want Theo to do something just to do something.

He's well aware, however, that fans are more turned on by shiny new toys than they are by sensible baseball moves (or non-moves), and he won't respond to moves by other teams.

I'm still hopeful for Holliday, but my hopes are growing dimmer the more I think about it. Letting Bay go and replacing him with nobody seems like exactly the type of thing Theo would do, and it isn't exciting or uplifting in the slightest.

it not the 40 man roster that a person needs to be on its the 25 man roster for the entire year.

Good deal for the Yankees. Granderson hits for power, runs the bases well, and is a good CF. His numbers are sort of all over the place, but he's going to love right field at Yankee Stadium. I don't really know what to make of Edwin Jackson. I think he'll regress slightly. But you never know. Look at what Brad Penny did in the NL West. Scherzer will wind up being better than Jackson, IMO. I think Schlereth was rushed to the Bigs last year. If he can improve on his command, he'll be filthy.

I bet you haven't even thought about the fact that maybe Melky is a better defensive CF than Granderson.

You can't have an opinion on it, because you've barely seen Granderson and refuse to use stats.

Not only that, but Melky is a much better CF than COF. So it's not an easy decision to make anyway.

They send Melky to the bench, and play Damon in LF.

Of course this move grates on me. If Bay is going to walk, it would have been nice to get Granderson to take his place. He's a young guy, so it's not like they gave up prospects for a guy in the twilight.

That would be plausible if Damon was on their roster.

Even if they do sign him, one of him or Matsui is not coming back. Out of Melky, Granderson and Damon, who's the best DH candidate?

Posted

Well, my initial concern was that it would be the deal that was initially proposed in this thread, which it's not. Overall, it's probably a decent move, better than I thought last night, but if they go into the season with an outfield of Swisher, Cabrera, and Granderson, I won't be happy with it.

I think this sets up perfectly for them to retain Damon, which would also allow for some flexibility in the DH spot.

As for Granderson, he's probably better than he was this past year (except in the HR department), but not as good as he was in 2007. If he falls somewhere in the middle, I'd be fine with that.

I think Arizona was the team that was fleeced here. The NYY made out with a steal, the Tigers did alright because they needed to save money and they got to add Scherzer.

I think Scherzer is as good as Jackson, and the other guy is pretty good too. AJ could be something decent.

Arizona, I don't understand, really, unless they think Scherzer's arm will fall off. Edwin will do well in the NL.

What I don't understand is the Tigers motivation. Why are they blowing up their team when they finished out of the playoffs by losing a one game playoff?

Payroll limitations. The team is flooded with bad contracts. On Jackson, i think they were just selling high.

I heard Jackson was still in the Deal to go to the Tigers. If that is true i think that the Tigers made out really well and with the Dbacks getting Kennedy and Edwin Jackson they didn't get screwed.

Ya, AJ is going to Detroit as well.

I'm still trying to find out why Arizona would agree to that deal. They are either really stupid or there is something they really don't like about Scherzer.

E1, I know you mentioned something regarding the Red Sox, and Granderson not being a fit. I'm not saying I disagree, but I thought I'd share this link...
