This was a pretty important move, considering the uncertainty coming up over the next few seasons -

-Pierce and Perkins are both FAs after next season, although I certainly can't see Pierce playing anywhere else

-Ray Allen is a FA after this season

-KG's knees

-Rasheed and KG are the only guys guaranteed through 2012 (and JR Giddens and Bill Walker...)

We needed Rondo to sign an extension, it's nice to get it out of the way now.

Definitely, especially when you factor in the insane amounts of money that are going to get thrown around next summer. Love this deal.

Ellsbury kinda sucks though so I don't understand your point. Also, basketball has this thing called a salary cap, you should look into it.

i know they have a salary cap. Ells doesn't suck. Rondo is going to be a key for this offense in his years here.

What?

teams are allowed to have a little over the salary cap i believe. they have a soft cap not a hard cap. what i said came out really retarded.

Right, but the wording of the rule isn't "You're allowed to have a little over the salary cap."

Isn't the main driver the fact that you can exceed the cap by re-signing your own players? The actual cap is set in the 50 million dollar range. Pierce alone makes 15+.

yeah thats what i mean. not like you can sign pierce to 50 million a year when the Celtics already have a 49 million dollar team salary.

It's actually exactly like that. They could toss $100 million at Pierce next year, because he's been on the team for long enough (3 years? 4?)

They'd pay luxury tax out the ass, but they could do it.

You're throwing a lot of qualitative language out there.

NBA salary cap: "You can sort of exceed this as long as it's within reason, you know."

wait did i say that or is that what the NBA salary cap rule really states

The wording is slightly different, but that's what it states.

David Stern wrote it in crayon on a napkin at a Bennigan's I think. It comes after clause 21© paragraph apple:

21©(apple): "Any shot made granny style behind the back counts as 5 points or the shooter can elect to remove a member of the opposing team for up to 4 minute, depending on if he's on fire or not"

it was a nice crayon though.

Probably so' date=' but I think it was necessary to keep him. I'd rather overpay a bit than to see him go.[/quote']

I don't know. I think this is OK in the short term but has the potential to hurt in the long term.

Still not convinced Rondo is a guy you build around.

not build around but great assist man. give him a shooter around him let alone three on the celtics and he is a good player.
