Biggest need?

How about backup 2/3 guards who can defend. I'd take that over a 6th big any day of the week.

Yes, it was their biggest need.

We all know Perk is going to be out for a long time and with him out of the lineup that only leaves KG and the oft injured Jermaine O'neal as their only big men.

Does everyone seem to forget this team was DOMINATED on the glass in the playoffs?

Not me.

That's a given Spud.

There are multiple backup 2/3 guards who can defend out there for them.

Larry Hughes and Delonte West are just a couple that come to mind. Daniels can also put in some minutes for them as well.

I was on the fence about signing Shaq. Given all the s*** the Boston media (print, mostly) has been saying about him. Particularly that twit Gasper. As if he ever played the game.

That's when I decided to think for myself.

Shaq has always had some weak points to his game. But low post defense and rebounding ar not among them. These are two areas that the Celt's have been lacking in recently and now that Perk is down until January or February, this move was essential.

Not to mention that he's going to score more than any low post player in green since Parish or McChale.

I distinctly recall saying over and over that the Finals depended solely on the health of Bynum. When he was in, the Lakers were killing us. When went down, the Lakers went down, but when Perkins followed, the Celtics fell apart.

On the Shaq signing-- He costs this team nothing. A minimum contract doesn't affect cap space whatsoever. He can only do good for his money, and if he does poorly, its the equivalent of a AAA baseball player doing poorly. There is nothing negative you can say about him. If he creates problems for this team, --the closest team in the NBA-- so either he gets along, or its Shaq against the world, and at that point they could just drop him, but I'm sure he'll make his million dollars for the team in Celtics Green Shaqwear.

Given his emotional troubles and the whole LeBron's mom thing, I can't help but feel like teams will be avoiding West like the plague. If all that gets straightened out though, I'd love to have him, since on top of providing defense and perimeter shooting, he might be able to take a few backup PG minutes away from Nate Robinson.

Sadly, they were much improved in the playoffs. I still don't know how we won 50 games being that bad of a rebounding team, but it definitely speaks out against the idea of us being too old.

Excellent post.

When he was in Boston, he had a reputation as a dick. I don't know what his problems are.

He's got at least one screw loose, apparently. How true are the reports of banging Lebron's Mom?

Esthetically, I find him repulsive. He's weird looking and has those ugly tats on his neck.

None of that matters, though. He's a talented athlete and a very good 2. Good speed, quickness, court vision, shot selection, and tough defense.

West went from crazy with the Celtics to a nutjob who really needs multiple psychiatrists when he was with the Cavaliers. He also doesn't have the size to play where we'd need him to play, or guard the guys we'd need him to guard.

Hughes hasn't played defense once in his career, and at his age isn't about to have a rebirth.

JR Giddens is probably the only free agent out there with the skill set we need who will sign a contract for something we can afford. Ideally we'd sign Roger Mason Jr and he'd fit that role perfectly, but he isn't a minimum type player.

I'm fine with the Shaq signing, just a little confused as to why they'd consider going after a 6th big before they fill a huge need at the swing spot. We're going to be putting even more pressure on Marquis Daniels than we did last year, and we all saw how he responded to that.

Mason Jr. is a decent player who could come in here and play his role. He wouldn't have to worry about much more than playing solid defense and shooting the occasional long ball. I'd like to see him here, but I think he's way out of our price range.

I guess the NBA gave him that All-Defensive 1st Team out of charity then.

Listen, I'm not claiming the guy is a great defender but he's been decent in the past. The question is would he come to Boston and buy into their system?

Posted

I was obviously exaggerating, but I'm pretty sure you get the point that he's not a very good defender any more. He's lost more than a step and just cannot be the on ball defender he used to be even if he's inserted onto the Celtics.

Would he come here and buy into the system? Who the hell wouldn't, but with his age and baggage he wouldn't do much good. Remember when everyone was complaing about lazy Sheed? That's what'd happen if Hughes was brought in here. You couple his age with his deteriorating physical attributes and his below average offensive game, he's not really a guy you want to see on the team.
