Also' date=' if he is injured, he cannot be put on waivers. I hear that there is some concern in the Sox camp about this.[/quote']

He's coming back from TJ. Of course there is concern.

The Players Union in Baseball is by far the strongest in professional sports. The owners can't pee without permission from the PU. I think they'll work out an agreement where Wagner gets to be a FA if he isn't used as a closer in Boston next year. That feeling is probably mutual. They aren't going to pay him 8 mil to setup--for sure. And they don't want him to close. The stickler is getting the draft picks. That's probably less important for Wagner. I don't know what they will do there, but they will want something in return if they are going to pay him 3.5 mil this year.

There's a chance they may just walk away, because they don't really need him this year, anyway.

So I dont get it...wagner wants the red sox to NOT pick his 2010 option.

so what exactly is the problem here? Paps is our closer and we have 4 excellent set up man allready, so why would they want his 2010 option?

He wants to close.

He's got 385 saves and wants to reach 400.

yes I understand that but I dont understand why the red sox would pick up his 2010 to begin with

They won't, but he's scared that if offered arb, other clubs will balk at signing him and he'll end up here stuck as a setup man.

So a NTC can block a waiver claim?
How do you get a guy off your roster if he has a NTC. You can't be forced to keep him on the roster if he's sucking ass, so how do you get rid of him?

Outright release.

There's no counter for that move.

Wouldn't the player have to be placed on irrevocable waivers as opposed to revocable waivers?

If you want to release a player and eat his contract, you can do it even if it means irrevocable waivers, because handing him to a team that wants him is the same as eating the contract and letting someone else sign him..

Unless they can work out a negotiation, yes.

On ESPN MLB stories, ESPN has a link that says "Wagner to Red Sox: Nix option to seal deal"

But I clicked link and all it said is he wants option to be declined, is this some kind of typo or did he really go to Boston?

Heres MLB part of ESPN and it says on right.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/

So does this mean there is a good chance Boston acquired him?

That's just Wagner saying' date=' if you want to get a deal done, promise you won't pickup the option.[/quote']

Oh, I misread it at first, thanks for the heads up. My bad.

Very doubtful they acquire him.

If they make a trade, it will be a couple nobodies as NYM want to rid themselves of the remaining contract, and wouldnt pick up the option anyway.

Now there is rumors circulating that he is indeed still injured, and not ready. Great, all we need to do is swing and miss on another big name pitcher from the National League coming back from major surgery......im sure he'll be fine, and weve done so well in that dept. (minus Saito).

I dont think the NTC or the redsox picking up the option are the real issues in this deal, I think Wagners left arm is the only thing holding this up regardless of what is being said.

I forget who mentioned this earlier but you cannot place an injured player on waivers.

Irrc, if a team trades a player and they turn out to be injured when they acquired him, the deal is cancelled and that player is returned to his original team.

I just heard that Wagner used his no-trade clause to veto the possible deal to Boston.

Wagner was asking that the Red Sox cut ties with him after the season with no strings attached (e.g. Opton or arbitration). I guess the Red Sox were more interested in the draft picks than helping this year's team. It was probably going to be just a money move-- no prospects.

I don't blame the Red Sox, I think every GM was going to decline his option, offer him arbitration and kick him in the rear end on his way out while taking the draft picks. I'd have done the same.

The story is the Red Sox don't want the option, so it's not the issue at this point. Wagner, or most likely his agent, realized their best option was to sit tight and do nothing. Hope the Mets forget Wagner is in the bullpen, preserve his arm, and come back as a free agent next year looking for a closer opportunity.

He doesn't want to pitch anymore this year--and get paid for it. That's what happens when baseball players have agents.
