They should hang a white flag on the CF pole. A disgrace starting Penny. This club needs NOT to make the playoffs. The management needs to take a good look at what it's doing.
The low risk high ceiling duo of Penny and Smoltz have combined for 9 wins and 13 losses. The cost for this abomination was $10.5 Million, more than $1 million per victory. It was a really bad investment.

Why dont they need to make the playoffs? They make the playoffs they have a chance. Now are the chances high? No but they do have two aces in Beckett and Lester that could do some damage. Why would any Sox fan say they DO NOT need to make the playoffs? You aren't a fan if you say that.

They have both been diasters. Smoltz was diasterous from the start and Penny has been beyond awful in the 2nd half. The Red Sox were trying to catch lightning in a bottle but the low risk high reward deals turn into high risk deals when you are in the middle of the pennant race. I think the old saying reminds of this situation "You get what you pay for" and between the Red Sox and Yankees is a perfect example of this.

What a billion dollar mess? The scoreboard in the new Dallas stadium appears to be in play. The punt just hit it. How do you put the bottom of the scoreboard close enough to the field for a punt to hit it?
