I highly doubt that.

Teixeira alone could not have carried this offense the two times this year it has really slumped.

Not carried, but lessened the effects of it. Bay slump hurt badly, and still would hurt badly, but it doesn't look as bad when Mark Teixeira is in your lineup, compared to Mike Lowell or David Ortiz.

And about the Yanks having a lesser player at 1st, that's conjecture, since they could have swung a deal for someone.

I don't know of a 1B available that would have been better than Teixeira.

Not better, but certainly not "A lesser player".

Tex wanted to go to the Yankees' date=' because they offered him more money. I think if the Sox offered him slightly more, he would have said it was always his dream to play for the Red Sox. Anyone of believes the s*** that came out of Tex's mouth is foolish.[/quote']

The Yankees would have topped any offer. They had to have him for their own offense, and could not afford in the least to have him join the Red Sox. They have by far the deepest pockets in baseball. You do the math.

It wasn't going to happen. Ever. Nobody on the Red Sox deserves blame for it, anyone who issues blame to them is a naive fool.

Even if he does cost prospects, imagine the awesomeness of this lineup:

Ellsbury

Pedroia

Youkilis

Gonzales

Martinez

Papi

Bay

Drew

SS FAIL.

I'd prefer a platoon, and see the Red Sox go after Hanley Ramirez.

@dowling25 - to add...I think Clay is sitting in the bullpen, but it'd have to another extreme game for him to be used, obviously.

That would be ideal, to be honest.

And the impact from his shortcomings at SS would be seriously helped by Pedey and Youk.

Mark Teixeira has a career OPS of .921, and is sporting a .938 OPS this year. Whoever they acquired, other than Adrian Gonzalez, would have undoubtedly been a lesser player.

I thought by "lesser player" you meant below league average, my mistake.

Please. If you believe this then you are really really thick. If the Sox had offered Tex 190-200 at their meeting, he probably would have signed.

Varitek's offensive "spike" does not mitigate other teams being able to turn all singles into doubles, does it?

About Teixeira, it's over and done with. A franchise saving move by the Yankees, so in that sense it was a missed opportunity. I hesitate to say that they didn't make a good faith effort or that they didn't go hard after the guy. Clearly they didn't go the extra mile to beat the Yankees offer and see if they Yankees would have paid more for him.

My sense, like Jacoby's above, is that once the Yankees realized how he could help their team, they were going to bid a lot for him. I also believe that Teixeira and his wife wanted to be in NY and were more than happy to both sign a huge contract when it was offered.

I would hesitate to use the word failure, because ultimately it is going to come down to results.

Do I think not getting Teixeira will keep the Sox out of the playoffs? No.

Could Teixeira end up being the difference maker in a playoff battle between Boston and NY? Yes, but so could Victor Martinez.

The difference between winning the division and "only" winning the Wild Card isn't that significant. When you play in the toughest division in baseball, it's all about getting to the playoffs. That's what we all worry about most, that's what the Rays and Yankees worry about. A season is a failure if this team with all of its resources doesn't make the playoffs when they should.

If you don't think the Teixeria camp would have returned to the Yankees and given them a chance to top the offer, since its rumored that they have a little bit of money in their bank account, then you are really really thick.

Pedroia has killed them this series. Absolutely killed them.

that DP in extras last night really really hurt, he almost always gets a runner in with less than 2 outs and runner on third

lol

Why did Teixeira meet with them privately then?

Just admit it, the FO botched that situation about as bad as they could.
