I can't help but to think for the backup role of 1B, LaRoche is not as good of a fit because he's a bit more expensive, and Kotchman won't complain about sitting down.

 

There has got to be another trade coming.

I don't see how we get Gonzalez now. What would we do with Vmart? Trade him away too? I REALLY want Gonzalez or Halladay or an solid to ace pitcher, but this is just all a bit confusing. I'm just going to hope for the best!

He was one of baseball's top 3 defensive 1B by UZR in ought eight and 14 and 15 FRAA over the course of the last 2 seasons. He's a much much better defensive player than Adam Laroche.

 

He had a .372 OBP in 2007 with LAA and he has one over .350 this season. I bet if he isn't flipped, he's used in late game defensive situations, a la Mientkiewicz in 2004.

I dont get this move at all. Laroche has pretty good defense and power. Why would the Braves take Laroche's salary when Kotchman gets paid the minimum.

It's 5 minutes to the deadline, it isn't like they have a week to make a trade. That's why this is so puzzling. You generally don't trade for a guy, just to turn around and trade him again.

Kotchman = Mientkiewicz I guess. If Youk's at third for the rest of the season I can see wanting a defensive 1B to backup Martinez as the primary first baseman.

You won't hear about any potential A-Gon or other blockbusters until possibly 4:30. We still have to wait until 4:45 or 5 to be sure.
