Not shocking, but the yankees are definitely looking for a starting pitcher, according to multiple media outlets. With the news that CMW is having persistent shoulder pain and needs to see Dr. Andrews, it seems like the yankees are scrambling to find a guy who can give innings. While a Halladay deal seems incredibly unlikely, a deal for a guy who can give innings, a la John Garland, seems very possible and probable. This is no knock on Sergio Mitre who pitched admirably in his first big league start in over a yr. But here is why.

When the season started, our starting 5 was CC, AJ, Pettitte, Wang, and Joba. Our contingencies were Aceves, Hughes, Kennedy and Mitre down the line. Well, Wang is now out for the yr most likely. Aceves and Hughes are vital parts of the pen. Kennedy isnt going to be big league ready this yr most likely since he is post surgery. Mitre is now in the rotation. Two MiLB options have gone down as well. George Kontos, one of our better pitching prospects under went TJ a couple weeks ago. Christian Garcia, one of our most promising pitching prospects a few yrs ago, underwent surgery again. And Zach McAllister, probably our best pitching prospect at AA or higher, is on the DL with shoulder tiredness. And then consider the fact that Joba is breaking new ground at the big league level with his IP totals and the concern has to be there.

A rundown of the teams out of it comes up with your standard cast of characters. Paul Byrd, who is looking for a second half team is an option. Garland and Doug Davis out of ARI are options. Halladay is a longshot. Jeremy Guthrie is another guy who could be useful assuming we overpay since the O's are in our division. Cliff Lee is a longshot. Gil Meche is a longshot and is on the DL. If the M's decide to bow out of this thing (they are only 5.5 out and are 7 games over .500) Washburn would be a very intriguing option, especially since the yankees nearly acquired him a yr ago. Cincinatti might be looking for takers on Harang and Arroyo, so its worth kicking the tires there. After that, you are looking at internal MiLB options mostly, which right now is not as deep as it has been. So, expect a deal coming soon for a pitcher. My guess is it will be Harang or Garland.

I'd say that's a likely scenario. I could see the Yanks getting in on Harang or Garland. I think Harang will garner some decent prospects. While Garland is closer to a salary dump then a "rebuilding chip" IMO. But neither should cost anyone of significant importance. A La Montero, Joba, Hughes to name a couple. Jackson could be part of some deal. But I would think the Yanks would want to hold onto him.

the yankees have a lot of intriguing AA and below guys who can bring back a guy like Harang or Garland. BTW, how far Harang has fallen. 2 yrs ago, this guy was considered a durable ace. Now, he is much more hittable

One guy I could see us using is Corban Joseph. He was an early round high school pick last yr who is raking in Charleston. Started the yr off poorly, but he's at a line of .452/.516/.622 over his last 20 games and has pushed his AVG to .300 and his OPS over .800 as a 20 yr old in the SAL. He'll be in our top 10 next yr and he is a guy who could become a hell of a middle infielder for us for a long time. That being said, he is the kind of guy that teams who are in full out rebuild will want. He's a ways away, but when you take on the rebuild with both hands, you have to be willing to get talent at all levels aside from now talent. We'll see.

Word is theyre in serious talks with the Reds about Arroyo, and that a deal "will get done."

God I hope not...

See if I can find that link again...

I would prefer Arroyo to Washburn. I know, I know, crazy. But, right now, we have a pretty solid 1-4. CC, Burnett, Pettitte and Joba are pitching well right now. But that 5 hole is a bit concerning with Mitre having 2 subpar starts. I think the biggest detraction of Mitre is not his production, but his depth. So therefore, it is all about what you are willing to give up and what you need. Washburn would still be in the #4-5 range in our rotation. Arroyo would be the #5. And while Washburn would be better through the end of the yr, neither would be starters in the playoffs. And Washburn would require actual prospects going the other way. So, unless the M's are willing to give us Washburn, I'll take the salary dump in Arroyo and see if being injected into a pennant race gets him back into a sub 5ERA form.

Garland gets hit at an alarming rate and has been doing so for awhile now. Arroyo has had the lower WHIP in a better hitter's division. That being said, neither of them are really pitching like studs. The one thing that really gets me interested in Arroyo also is the IP. Kid is durable. This will be his 5th consecutive yr throwing 200+IP.

Ive always liked arroyo, the boy eats up innings, is completely oblivious to pressure and has had some playoff success in meaningful innings. Is he the answer? Well the way we've been hitting 2 rookie faggots from Texas can stick it up our ass..He would provide Ny with some depth at the starting rotation which they definetly will need with a pimped out Sabbathia, an injury prone Joba and the biggest question mark in Burnett, who i think is the key to the entire Ny playoff agenda.

I-95 is a horrific mess from the NY line all the way to New Haven on most days this time of year. Let me know next time you're coming through, we'll grab lunch.

That's the same Gaudin. These are the kind of moves that have helped us in the past. Pick up guys with a history of some success who have fallen on bad times. Every now and then we hit when thrusting that player back in a pennant race. Aaron Small, Al Leiter and Shawn Chacon say hi. Regardless, he cannot be as bad as Smoltz or Mitre. That being said, I would actually approve of bringing Igawa back up. Why not. Can't be as bad as Mitre.
