The sox have gone with a ton of prep talent which is very much against their grain seeing as most of their big draftees have been CC or college guys.

It's not like they have avoided HS players in recent years. They are just spending more aggressively on them now. They are using above slot money to load their system and ensure that they will have plenty of trading chips for the next few years.

FA is pretty weak the next few years. I think that they drafted younger last year and this year so they have lots of young high-ceiling talent to include in big deals for the next 3-4 years.

Well, one of the caveats of prep talent is the high miss rate. When you hit, the reward is higher because the players are under your control at a younger age, but the miss rates are ridiculous. That being said, the sox got some high ceiling guys and paid the price for them. Theo went balls out in this draft and spent a ton of money

Going for high school and long range talents is the thing to do when you have a stable big league team and a good cadre of upper level talent. College players are historically for teams with big holes who want a quick fix.

I think tonight is the deadline for everyone' date=' but we already signed Renfroe.[/quote']

oh wow, I missed that news. good stuff

looks like you were wrong...it was close though' date=' only 24 away from signing all of em[/quote']

I was kidding, champ.

It's impossible to sign an entire draft.

Gonna make juice with those cherries you're picking?

You'd call the sox a stable big league team at this time? And their cadre of upper eschelon talent, where's that?

Just joshing you. It is all about balancing the farm. First off, you pick the best talent available and the best players you scouted depending on their position. Remember, Selig is levelling some sanctions vs teams for going far overslot in the top 10 rounds. That's why there were so many long range guys drafted after the 10th round. Then, if you have similar talents, you need to figure out where they are gonna fall and where they slot in. With NY, we have a TON of talent in the GCL and in the DSL, meaning that the short season teams are gonna be loaded, especially in the pitching forum. So, getting college pitching would help bridge the gap in High A and Charleston while these guys figure it out in SI and the GCL.

Biggest surprise IMO is the signing of Renfroe. Biggest talent left unsigned is Branden Kline' date=' but he said he wanted upper 1st round money[/quote']

We knew we weren't going to sign Kline since near the beginning. He was dead set on going to college. I was more worried about not signing Bard or Dykstra, but considering all of the picks we did sign and that most of them were towards the top of the draft (14 out of the first 15) I'd say that we did a good job overall. I'm definitely excited about seeing some of these guys in a few years.
