so here's a question' date=' if a first round pick like Fuentes gets 1.13 mil as a bonus, what right does someone like Renfroe have in asking for 3.5 mil? is he a better prospect than Fuentes and just dropped because of his bonus demands?[/quote']

Yup.

In fact, some considered Renfroe to be the best 2-way talent in the draft.

Renfroe and Heathcott are your two HS two way players with Heathcott getting a bit of an edge due to the fact that he throws harder, is left handed and is a bit more developed offensively. That being said, Renfroe in terms of sheer talent was rated as a late 1st rounder, supplemental type player, but he's asking for top 10 pick money. He has a ton of leverage since he could just go to school and forgo third round money

I really want want Renfroe, he looks like a Beast from everything ive seen and read plus it keeps him from going to Ole Miss (whom I hate), but he looks like he has all the tools to be an amazing SS in The Show. And BTW im pretty sure that the sox packed their draft with talent so that they could miss signing half of em and still end up with a bunch of talent coming in they never planned on signing everyone but now they can take awhile to debate who they see being worth the money

Germantown (Tenn.) HS shortstop Jason Thompson, an 11th-round pick, has agreed to terms with the Red Sox on a $300,000 bonus.

A 2008 Aflac all-American, Thompson was Baseball America's top-rated high school position player in Tennessee this spring. He's a 6-foot-1, 180-pound switch-hitter with good athleticism, plus speed and solid arm strength. He profiles more as a second or third baseman, and area scouts wanted to see him drive the ball more consistently. He had committed to Louisville.

We signed our 11th rounder, 20th, 22nd, and 41st which should be updated.

Now I'm not a draft expert, but I would imagine that the Sox have a part of their budget specifically designated for the draft. Some guys are going to want an over-slot signing, and the Sox won't be able to do this for everyone. I can't see them signing everyone.

I agree with you.

Younginer is a great signing' date=' kid throws ched[/quote']

My apologies for being a pain, but can you update the original post by highlighting the updated signings? I mentioned the new ones earlier in the thread. My apologies again, I'm a stickler for details, and I obviously can't do it myself.

how good of a catching prospect is this Michael Thomas we signed? a high ceiling guy at all?

From Soxprospects

Athletic and sturdy frame. Strong arm. Nice catch and release action. Hits to all fields with gap power. Some power potential. Smart.

Renfroe comes to terms with Red Sox

There are rumors circulating around North Mississippi that South Panola’s David Renfroe has come to terms with the Boston Red Sox and has inked a deal 2.7 million on Wednesday.

Apparently, Sox have had a deal in place with Renfroe for a while but the Commish is sitting on approving it until near August 17th in order to avoid a precedent

Actually the Renfroe deal is officially $1.4 Million.

Looks like we've also signed our #18 Renny Parthemore, but I can't confirm it at this point. I'd be ecstatic even if we didn't sign a single player after that. Getting Renfroe, Youninger and Parthemore (in addition to what we've had) is enough for me.

The are spending a lot on this draft. Parthemore is another 7 figure bonus guy

I don't think we spent that much on him. I thought we spent in the 300-400k range.

Considering that we got Jacobs and Younginer for less than $1 million (each) I doubt we spent 7 figures on Parthemore, unless decimals count.

Just so this thread doesn't die (and neither does Jacko's post) this is potentially a very important draft for the Red Sox. The talent they got out of it appears to make it their deepest since 2005.

Wilson, Renfroe and Younginer are all good bets to make it to the bigs eventually. I don't know enough about Fuentes, but from what I've read about him I assume that he may as well. Aside from those guys there are interesting stories to follow, Jeremy Hazelbaker who was 2nd in the nation in OBP at Ball State (a quicker OF version of Youkilis? We can hope); Shannon Wilkerson who was Div II player of the year and broke numerous records... I'm not banking on him, but his story could either be a really nice story or a harsh reminder that only the best of Div I ever make it; Brandon Jacobs, who turned down a chance to be a RB at Auburn to play for the Sox--another player unlikely to dominate at the MLB level, but his athleticism and story are worth following.

There are great names too; Hazelbaker, Schwindenhammer, Younginer, Wilkerson, McGuiness, Parthemore, Head.

All in all I think they have really nicely restocked some very high ceilings in their system. They didn't hold back the money and with the talent they now have in their system I think they should be primed to be part of some very big deals over the next few years. I say "deals" plural now because they have a lot of potential MLB talent in their system (Buchholz, Bowden, Bard, Anderson, Tazawa, Kelly, Renfroe, Reddick, Kalish, Westmoreland, Pimentel, Iglesias, Lin, Fuentes, Wilson etc.,) and you can make a lot of combinations of five of those 15 players and send very nice talent the other way.

Add Kendal Volz to the list:

A power arm who many projected to be among the best college arms in the nation this year. He had a somewhat disappointing season and didn't pitch great in the Cape League, but few seem to doubt that his stuff is there. It looks like many scouts believe he might be able to stretch out into a starter, but I hope the Sox just focus on letting him succeed in short relief. Having a deep, hard throwing pen has been a really nice change.

how does it work for signing deadlines? I know Strasburg's deadline is tonight so does that mean Renfroe's deadline is also tonight?
