Wakefield (7-3, 4.50) vs The Wang (0-3, 14.46)

Lets make it 7-0.

As confident as everyone seems to be about tonight with Wang pitching, I am not. I'm expecting a really close ballgame throughout, although I'd love for the Sox to serve up another beat down so I could relax a little bit.

Go Sox.

No Ellsbury again?

Got to have him healthy. I don't expect him in the starting line-up for the Yankees series.

Kotsay will do his job. I hope.

He could have a career game. Not. The onus is on Wakefield. Can he be effective with high air density?

It will be very humid tonight. Where will his knuckler go?

Well isin't high humidity good for a knucleball? I hope so.

I have seen no data either way. Some baseball geek from MIT should help us here. With low air density the ball would be subject to ambient conditions, I believe. With high air density, the ball may change it's trajectory with unpredictable results (it has more mas effecting it). That is my opinion. Based on my understanding of physics. I could be wrong! Wakefield 's arm slot/mechanics have to be consistent. This is not an "exact science". Go Sox!

Pregame quick hits

Jacoby Ellsbury is on the field now shagging some batting practice, but he will not play today. His right shoulder will be evaluated. "I think he's hoping for tomorrow," manager Terry Francona said. "I guess I am, too. We'll see today."

If you watched last night's game, you saw the comical, NESN-captured image of Jonathan Papelbon sleeping in the bullpen while resting his chin on his hand. Papelbon had a valid excuse -- he had food poisoning yesterday, which he caught at Tim Wakefield and Jason Varitek's charity poker event Monday night. Papelbon was not available to pitch yesterday, Francona revealed. Papelbon was so dehydrated that a team doctor considered taking him to the hospital. He feels better today and could pitch tonight.

John Smoltz will pitch his final rehab outing tomorrow with Triple A Pawtucket in Syracuse, N.Y. It will be a "full-fledged" outing, Francona said. Smoltz has already reached the point where he is competing, not merely rehabbing, and he will not have a required pitch count tomorrow. "I think he's probably already there," Francona said.

Smoltz's imminent return means the Red Sox will have six starters for five spots; John Farrell said recently that the Sox have not discussed a six-man rotation. Francona has discussions what to do with Smoltz with Farrell and Theo Epstein, but he didn't reveal the content of those discussions. "Those things have a way of working themselves out," Francona said.

The Red Sox selected Daniel Bard's brother, Luke Bard, out of Charlotte (N.C.) Christian High School in the 16th round this afternoon. He has committed to Georgia Tech as a pitcher.

What happens to Nick Green -- who is starting his fourth straight game -- when Jed Lowrie returns? Francona said he hasn't started thinking about that, but because Green has played well this year, "that'll be a nice problem to have," Francona said.

The Red Sox traded Pawtucket outfielder Chip Ambres to the Mets.

We're still bitter about that? We were losing that series either way.

Whole different series if it goes back to Fenway 1-1 instead of 2-0...

And even if they still lose game 3, Schilling very well could have forced the series back to Chicago.

Meh. Maybe we win two in a row, maybe not. Either way we weren't winning the Series with a rotation of Clement, Wells, a crappy Schilling and Wakefield.

Yeah, I mean, Schilling had a few decent starts before the postseason if I remember correctly. I guess, if it went to a fifth game, they would have brought back Wells on short rest instead of going back to Clement.

Not that this even matters haha, I guess I kind of just like discussing past postseason series (and I'll stop all the Yankee jokes I just set myself up for before they start haha).
