Drove a couple of hours from my Atlanta home to Augusta last night to catch John Smoltz's next step in rehab. A lot of fans wore Smoltz/Braves jerseys and T-shirts. Heard this was an active board and thought you Sox fans would be interested.

We could use his arm in the rotation. Although I don't know what we would do with Penny' date=' he was decent his last start out.[/quote']

I don't know, Penny seems like a ticking time bomb. He was extremely fortune in his last start not to give up 5 or 6 runs. They were hitting rockets off him all night, plus he isnt really missing bats whatsoever.

Honestly I'm not sold on him. I still think he might be pretty solid this year I'm just not sold on him as of yet. I have to see his stuff first and I honestly don't expect it to be spectacular I'm sure he'll be solid out of the pen but not as a starter.

Last week my girlfriend came up to visit. She flew through Atlanta and told me that a muscular man in his 40's decked out in sox garb sat near her on the flight from Atlanta to Boston. She was making fun of him saying it must have been some crazed sox fan. I asked her if it was Smoltz and she said she had no idea.

She finally looked up a picture of him this morning and told me that it was definitely him. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Hmmm, who do you demote? Beckett is back to being a beast, Lester has been hot and cold, Penny is good for a quality start most night at least lately and Wakey isnt the best pen arm due to his unpredictable nature? Right now, in my book, it is between Lester and DiceK since both of them have been off this yr and they both have been pen drains. Well, that is if you go by merit. I think Penny gets the boot in the real world though. No way Terry drops one of his "guys".

Wake gets DL'd?

that's what I would do (if Penny doesnt get traded). he's got his shoulder issue and he's broken down the last couple of years

DL'ing a guy thats 7-3 to make room for a guy that is coming off shoulder surgery doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Wake has been f***ing awfull since the 1st of May , except for 1 start

in May his WHIP is 1.81 and ERA 6.82

the reason he's 7-3 is his run support

If you know anything, you know that it means an upswing is probably coming soon. That's just how wakefield works.

and if you know anything, you know he'll break down at some point over the next two months. Better to rest him for the stretch run. that's just how Wakefield works

Put him on the DL? For what? He is what he is. A .500 pitcher. Shmoltz has done nothing to prove he is superior as yet. Buckholtz has proven that he can not sustain a high level of performance in the big leagues. Wake may not be a sure thing, but he is a known commodity. Back/shoulder problems are not part of the equation at the moment. I have come to like Penny. But he is probably gone. Along with some minor league talent. So be it. Next.

Wake's knuckler always gets going when the weather warms up. It's Penny I'm worried about. I saw him self destruct in L.A. and, if it wasn't for the great run support he's gotten, he'd be 1-6.

Good outing by Smoltz tonight for Pawtucket. 6 innings 1 hit 1 run 2 BB 3 K's

One more rehab start and he'll be up with the big team.

Has the potential to be quite the addition to what has been a shaky rotation at times. With Lester and Beckett seeming to come into their own and Wakefield and Penny holding down their spots to an extent, Dice K has to prove he doesn't belong on an extended DL stint. I would obviously see Smoltz replacing Penny, as I think moving Penny to the bullpen could be where he's most effective (since he can throw 3 to 4 innings right away as well as anyone at times). Either way, Smoltz's addition only adds to the considerable amount of depth the Red Sox have. Can't wait for him to return. I'm not expecting the John Smoltz that we've come to know over the dominant years he has had obviously, but I do think he can contribute quite a bit of success to this club.
