Building a Franchise - The Anti-Fantasy Baseball League

I'll be completely honest and say this, I stole this idea from SoSH but think it's an awesome idea that can really spark some lively baseball discussion on this board (outside of Sox/Yankees) and really make people a little more active again.

http://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.php?showtopic=44137

The premise is simple:

The Game

Every baseball player on a current roster, including those on the DL, have been released and the 30 posters represent 30 new teams. 30 new 'posters' will start from scratch and 'build' their teams. You can go young, for the future. Win it now. A combination. Every player cost the same, which is to say, they cost you selecting them if available. After we have 30, I'll pick the order by random and we'll snake.

The Object

Unlike Fantasy, we won't be following these guys all year or collecting stats for them. It's simple really. It's a fun way to 'rank' (in a sense) the best players in the game and to build actual teams (not a collection of fantasy stats). The object is to select the players, discuss the players and the why and rag on other people's opinions (friendly-like, of course) and celebrate the geniuses opinions (mean-like, of course).

I don't think we'll get to 30 posters but I do think we can bend the rules slightly to make this even more creative - I want to make 30 man rosters. I also the think the endgame for this exercise is to create the team that will be most successful five years from now.

There is nothing to be won from this exercise, no tournament, no cash prize, nothing except intelligent baseball discussion.

Individuals will select the following positions:

C

1B

2B

SS

3B

OF

OF

OF

DH

SP

SP

SP

SP

SP

RP

RP

P

Bench

Bench

25 major leaguers, and then 5 minor leaguers. The 5 minor leaguers will be those who have options left, and can be sent down to the minor leagues.

I'd like to see if we can't give this a shot and bring some light to other other teams and players across MLB - I also think it will garner some interesting discussions.

I'd like to get at least 15 posters to do this, if you're interested just let me know and what your new team name will be.

I'll start off as the Charlestown Chiefs.

Yes, I know I'm unoriginal, but I thought it was a really cool idea and wanted to give it a shot.

Teams:

TheKilo - Charlestown Chiefs

Jacoby_Ellsbury - Orlando Sharks

BoSox21 - Montreal Expos

Coco's Disciples - Denver Disciples

YOTN - Hartford Kaijins

ORS - San Antonio Seats

Dojji - Baring Badgers

castigs850 - Billerica Boob Lickers

msubulldogs

I also should have mentioned individuals will have 48 hours after the last pick to make a selection - and if you are interested and can't do it, just let us know.

We'd have to select a DH? Pfft...

And I'm totally going to forget my login over the next 5 years.

The draft itself will only take a few months, the team should be built to win over the next five years.

I dont think theres a statistical measurement determined to get a winner but obviously you can use stats to defend your selections

Okay...I was trying to make a tribute with my team name, obviously, but the more I look at it the more I don't like the way it flows. Can you change it to the Kaijins? That was her middle name and it sounds much better.

Done and done, and thanks CD and BoSox for explaining the intent better than I did.

Got a load of questions, but I'm up for debate and discussion, so I'm in.

Interesting. I'm in, as the Baring Badgers a favorite fictional team name of mine in a number of online baseball games. Might be an interesting way to sort of put my money where my mouth is with some of these hunches and prospect fetishes of mine.

But I want a no-DH option. Not 'cuz I intend to use it, but 'cuz others might want it.
