Totally off topic' date=' but how about signing the Captain to 2 years plus an option. Worst case scenario is we get a decent year, and he costs us one extra year. Thoughts?[/quote']

Explain to me how the worst case scenario is that he gives us a decent year. The guy is done.

I wouldnt go that far. But yeah I would say a decent year, would be absolutely the best case scenario at this point.

He's consistently about 10 runs worse per 150 games at 1B than he is in LF' date=' according to UZR. The best place to play him on the Sox is in LF, where he costs about 15 runs per 150 games in the field. To be fair, though, UZR does not like Jason Bay either, as he was -15.9 combined in Pitt/Bos last year. Although, Bay was a positive LF as recently as 2006, whereas Dunn has held in the -11 to -16 range for the last 4 years.[/quote']

Bay at 1B and dunn in LF for home games, flip them on the road? LOL

Looking at Dunn's fielding stats at first base, I don't think it's much of an option (especially since Bay hasn't spent any time there). It's very unfortunate, because I think Dunn would do great here. Could Bay play RF? Probably not.

Then what do you do with Drew? He's the only RF this team has right now.

In theory, you could move Drew to center, he's good enough to be an everyday center-fielder in almost any ML team.

However, that position is more demanding than RF, so a chain of injuries would probably follow such a move.

Well, that's the obvious problem. I like Drew, but I think our offense would do much better with Dunn's bat. Unfortunately, neither Bay nor Dunn is as solid in RF as Drew.

I think Drew's defense makes him just as valuable as Dunn, personally.

Drew is due for a big season in my opinion.

Also in my opinion, I think it would be a good idea for the Sox to work Drew out a bit at 1B in spring training. He's RH, but if he could spend even a little time there it would, even only beginning in 2010, it would greatly improve the players they could acquire to improve the team, corner OFs in particular, they could be flexible with another CF, move Ellsbury to LF and put Bay in RF, etc., a lot of options. That said, I would probably do the same thing with Bay--could he play any 1B?

I actually think Drew is going to slightly regress. He had a .926 OPS against lefties in 2008, which is a huge increase from his career figure of .797. That seems to me to be a blip on the radar which should change in 2009. However the bigger question is obviously his health; if he can be healthy, he will still be quite productive.

BAA is about the worst stat to use for any argument. And with some work he [Dunn] can be passable at 1B.

It won't happen. Front Office has repeatedly said they value strong defense at first base.

If Bay is committed to moving on after this year or won't resign during the season I could see trading him and signing Dunn to play LF, but Dunn will not play 1B in Boston, I'll stake what little reputation I have left on that.

I'm not even paying attention to the merits of the argument.

problem #1

The mere fact that he would call any other team's 3rd highest paid player "overpaid", when his own team has 9 guys who make more than the Sox highest paid player, is comical.

If you revert to problem #1 and understand the context of the argument, then you would likely understand the nature of the post

The money doesn't matter when it is his players, but it's an extra jab he gets to take at all the other teams.

I can't believe the s*** people let this joker get away with around here.

Again, refer to problem #1. Another example of "what I want to read-itis". You and JimEd should buy some lube for the next flare. Cause this one was sure to run you ragged.

I could see Bay getting moved if he won't sign long term for what the Sox want him at.

Sign Dunn, trade Bay for a Catcher?

Bay+Bowden+Esposito for Mauer?

CF Ellsbury

2B Pedroia

C Mauer

DH Papi

1B Youk

LF Dunn

3B Lowell

RF Drew

SS Lowrie

I agree. I dont see him having another season like the one he had last yr. He's a high .800s OPS guy, not a low .900s guy. But if he puts up a .890 OPS playing 140 games, he'll be more valuable. It all depends on his health. And throughout his career he's been an every other yr kind of guy, so if that continues, he should stay healthy for 09.

Not sure the Twins are the right target for Bay. I was thinking more about a team like the Mariners, and maybe bringing in Jeff Clement. Or a midseason trade to St. Louis for Anderson if and when Ludwick returns to terra firma.

so the twins, a team that has no chance of signing long term deals with either Bay or Mauer, will take an older OFer with 1 less yr of contract control in exchange for a young catcher with 1 more yr of control. Really?

Posted
Well maybe not Bay to the Twins directly, but he could be used to send to another team to pick up someone whi the Twins would want. I was just trying to show using Bay for a Catcher.

Please stop coming up with trade suggestions. Thanks.

I never said I take my ideas for trade literally. There for more conversation sake. You may live and die by everything you choose to post, but that doesn't mean I have to do the same.

But, if you feel that these suggestions are not up to or beneath your standards, by all means feel free to ignore and not respond to them.

Yeah....... how about we all cool off and try to be a little bit more tolerant to other people's ideas......we're just talking baseball here, let's keep the tempers down a bit, shall we.....

I think it would take a lot for the Sox to deviate from a plan for the 2010 rotation to be Beckett-Lester-DiceK-Buchholz-Bowden when considering trades
