Rocco Baldelli's mitochondrial disorder misdiagnosed

Recommended Posts

Seems that the mitochondrial disorder Rocco Baldelli had been diagnosed with following a long history of injury, which effected his stamina and ability to play regularly on back to back days was misdiagnosed. Turns out that after visiting the Cleveland clinic he was diagnosed with channelopathy, a non-progressive, highly treatable disease. The treatment should help with his extreme fatigue and help make him a suitable regular player again. How convenient that he's a free agent, should improve his chances of getting a better deal.

I'm not at all familiar with channelopathy, so perhaps if a doctor wants to break it down for us, and how it could be mistaken for a mitochondrial disorder please do so. Jacko?

A mitochondrial disorder is a dysfunction of the ATP producing mitochondria in the body. ATP is the energy source on which our body uses on a chemical level to generate energy. A channelopathy is a dysfunction with the ion channel leading to inadequate and inefficient transmission of an electrical charge through the muscle. Thats about the extent that I know to be honest with you. Geneticists, Pathologists and cell biologists would know it better since it is truly on a biochemical level

I doubt too many GM's will give him one. Even apart from the fact that he still needs to prove he can stand up to a big league workload, his numbers when healthy are not spectacular over the last few years. And he does still have a medical condition that will dictate how and where he plays, which makes him a prime candidate for the Gabe Kapler role rather than a full time starting job.

It's possible because a good RF seems to be very hard to find these days but I don't see it.

He'd be a great 4th outfielder for us but I can see him getting a one or two-year deal from a small market club for starting job in an effort to prove to other teams he can take a full-time gig

You mean you actually don't know something?

hmmm....I wish the best for him and hope this is accurate....but the timing makes me wonder.

Me too. It seems a little sketchy, but hopefully this is all true and accurate.

Yup...no offers coming in, all of a sudden "HEY I'M FINE"?

Seems a tad sketchy.

I think he be ok for a 4th OF, especially if the utility IF has some OF experience like Harriston or someone.

This is a big deal - it means his condition 1) can be treated and 2) can be treated just with meds. Teams will still be cautious, but he should land somewhere and do well. His preference to DH might keep him from the Sox, though...

I would be surprised if he lands a full time job anywhere.
