Sucks. Now we might not get any compensation at all. If Tek can't latch on to a team we won't get anything.

At least we've preserved our own picks though. Do the Yankees have a pick above the 4th round right now?

Byrd must have no interest from anyone. Same as Tek. Looks might there might not be any compensation for anyone.

we have both a 1st and 2nd rounder from not signing our guys from last yr

Here's what I don't get: If you have two first rounders for whatever reason and sign a second type A free agent exactly why don't you lose the other one instead of your "natural" second rounder?

Because those are protected.

Remember, if the players don't sign, the pick becomes protected for next year.

I believe Byrd had interest from many clubs, including a few smaller market teams. The issue was in the fact that he wanted to be with his family, and didn't want to put a strain on them by pitching a full season. Furthermore, he does plan on being a "hired gun" throughout the season as he wants to pitch for a contender later on.

I can't blame the dude, but unfortunately that means we don't get a supplemental round pick out of him, which we could have really used.

In all fairness, all things are not equal in terms of the draft when it comes to comparing protected picks from the year before to picks in the current draft. The picks in rounds 1-5 are protected for each team, meaning that if a team does not sign their particular pick, they are granted that SAME pick in the same slot in the next year.

Also protected are the first 1-15 picks which cannot be given away through a free agent signing.

Anyway, when a team fails to sign a first-fifth round pick, the new pick is protected because by definition, it is the same pick as the one that took place a year ago. What is interesting, is that if a team failed to sign a player with the pick that was granted for not signing a player in the previous draft, a new pick IS NOT granted. If that makes sense.

I expect to see him in a Brewers uni shortly. Would be a good fit for both parties.

Don't we get a pick if that happens?
