http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/red_sox/index.php/2008/12/01/red-sox-offer-arbitration-to-varitek-and-byrd/

As expected, the Red Sox offered salary arbitration to two — Jason Varitek and Paul Byrd — of their nine free agents. Varitek, a Type A, according to Elias and not his personality free agent, and Byrd, a Type B, would each command a draft pick if they sign elsewhere. Varitek would bring back two picks, Byrd one, a supplemental pick. The two have until Dec. 7 to decide about accepting the offer. Neither is expected to.

Missing the obvious or just blocking it out of conscious thought?

We do have an opening in the rotation you know.

I didnt think the sox were gonna go the arb route on tek. He can now come back with the potential for a raise. Arb is based on the last 2 yrs and his 2007 wasnt too bad. Boras can also go into it saying he's the anchor and captain for a team that won a WS and was 2 runs away from playing in another within the past 2 seasons. I have a feeling Tek accepts

BTW -- this really doesn't do Tek any favors in terms of courting other teams. Now anyone who wants him has to give up a pick for a guy who's maybe not all that good.

If Theo really wanted to spike Boras' wheel this was a good way to do it.

Of course, that would be a PR disaster for the mega-agent. Imagine if people started thinking he couldn't do better than the acceptance of arbitration for his clients.

Alright, so I'll re-word what I wanted to convey in my post

I personally dont want to see Byrd and Wakefield anchoring the rotation

Yep, just like with Gagne.

Anyway, in order to get picks from 'Tek someone other than us will have to sign Tek. With the Tigers' trade for Laird, one of the places that might have been interested in Tek has filled their holes.

Who is still in the market for a veteran catcher right now? I can't pick out any dark horses that are a real possibility.

I don't think this closes the door on Detroit' date=' Laird has never been the main guy in his career.[/quote']

Ya but now that they have him, I don't see Detroit offering Tek the money him and Boras seem to want.

I would say the door is shut for Tek in Detroit, but not locked.

He is starting to run low on options.

And why shouldn't he?

he wants a boatload of money based on his "leadership" even though he "hit" .220 with a borderline .300 OBP, and that's not a 10 million plus per year performance in anyone's mind.

I know retirement washes away the compensation pick. But what about joinging mid season?

Interesting point. Do the picks have an expiration date?

I haven't heard about ANY other teams in the mix for Varitek, at least not seriously. If the Sox want him, they could probably sign him whenever they want. Boras won't make it easy, but in the end, he really doesn't have much leverage.
