Sports Radio 810 WHB in Kansas City reports that the Red Sox have traded Coco Crisp to the Royals in exchange for Ramon Ramirez.

We're still waiting to see the move confirmed by other sources. Ramirez had an excellent rookie year for the Rockies in 2006 before struggling in 2007, but bounced back following a trade to the Royals last season, posting a 2.64 ERA and 70/31 K/BB ratio in 71 2/3 innings. Dealing for Crisp would leave the Royals with a very crowded outfield and could indicate that the team is on the verge of dealing Mark Teahen or David DeJesus.

Ramon Ramirez looks like a fine pitcher. If he pitches like he did with the Royals for us that gives us one heck of a bullpen.

that, and we pretty much clear Crisp's salary and bring in a quality player. that should help us if we intend to make a splash in the free agent market, such as for AJ Burnett, or picking up the salary of a veteran catcher like VMart or Johjima.

According to Brian McRae reporting for Sports Radio 810 in Kansas City, the Royals acquired Coco Crisp from the Red Sox for reliever Ramon Ramirez. I emailed McRae to confirm, and he said, "It's a done deal." The Royals get speed and a capable center fielder, while the Red Sox receive a quality late-game reliever.

Crisp, 29, hit .283/.344/.407 in 409 plate appearances this year. His center field defense saved 26 bases over the average last year, but was two below this year (he did battle groin, hamstring, knee, and foot issues). Crisp will earn $5.75MM in '09 and has an $8MM club option with a $500K buyout for '10.

The Red Sox trim payroll here, as Ramirez is not yet arbitration-eligible. He will not reach free agency until after the 2012 season, so the Red Sox impressively acquired four years of his services. The 27 year-old posted a 2.64 ERA in 71.2 innings this year while whiffing 70. The Royals might have to add a reliever to compensate for his absence. They're also a bit heavy on outfielders at this point.

The Royals had problems last year with their outfield. Jose Guillen didn't live up to expectations and Mark Teahen never really has. My guess is the plan is to move David Dejesus over to left field, platoon Guillen and Teahen in right, and let Crisp take over center.

If they do it that way, then the Royals probably got the better of this bargain.

He definitely looks like a solid reliever, entering the prime of his career and he adjusted well to the AL last season. From what I've read, he has an average fastball with a slider but a nasty curveball which I guess is damn good considering he averages almost a K an inning but he is prone to giving up homers.

There been talks that Dejesus, or Teahen could get moved.

I like the move. I thought Coco might be part of a bigger deal, but a 3ish ERA BP arm is nice bring back.

I wonder if this is the only move for the BP. It's close to being filled at the moment. Ramirez takes Timlin's spot.

I also wonder if thr Sox would be more open to moving Masterson for something they want now?

Last year Ramirez pitched 71.2 innings, with an ERA+ of 162. 70K, 31BB, 2.64 ERA, 1.23WHIP

Only 2 HR allowed.

I am not a huge fan of this deal unless it is a precursor to something else, Crisp gave the OF tremendous flexibility this past year and is exactly the guy you want on your bench. Also throw in the fact I don't believe Ellsbury can handle the everyday CF job.

If the Sox intend on moving Masterson back in the rotation OR flipping Ramirez to a team that wanted Masterson in a deal for a catcher, then I'm OK, not thrilled, but OK, with this.

That being said, there are valid concerns that he won't be as willing to play the good solider after this season, as his contract is ending. It's good for him that he'll be able to play every day.

you gotta like the look of the bullpen, replacing Timlin with Ramirez

its gonna be interesting to see who they acquire to be the fourth outfielder now since we really don't have another option

I was thinking that myself. The Sox are looking pretty good with a set up corps of Delcarmen, Ramirez and Oki before Papelbon. Does Masterson still open the season in the bullpen? Do the Sox stand pat and give hime the 5th starters spot? Or as you suggested, would he be part of a trade (Salty?)

Agree on both ends. But considering Jacoby didn't have a season as some expected(me being one, but for 1st full season it wasn't horrible), I doubt he would have taken likely to being the 4th OF again. I think we would have seen a very different Coco next season in that situation.

This could be a small part to a bigger deal, whether it's Ramirez or Masterson getting moved.

What if this means the Sox are preparing to make an offer to Kotsay?

I'd certainly welcome him back in a Coco role, plus he can adequately play 1B.

Ive heard Nick Carfado suggest the Sox would go for New England native Rocco Baldelli. That would be a great defensive outfield of Bay, Ellsbury, Drew and Rocco.

Except Rocco has a disease that won't let him play more than one game in a row.

Kotsay offers them better flexibility. Could Jeff Bailey be the RHH off the bench?

I'd like to see a reliable source on this tho. I hope it's done, but coming from a radio source makes me iffy on the credibility.

Yeah, good point. Reality check: this is still unconfirmed.

You could do worse for 4th OF than Jon van Every.

A guy who struck out 25% of the time in AAA gives me cause for concern.

I was calling for him to get a shot when Jacob was stuggling this season, but it seemed MiLB pitchers figured him out in the 2nd half.

Plus, he's another LHH. We need a righty bat off the bench.

Red Sox exec Ben Cherington was on XM's MLB Home Plate radio station recently. He says "the report is premature."

9:43am: MLB.com's Jim Molony received a "no comment" from the Red Sox on McRae's report. Royals exec Mike Arbuckle said Crisp is still under Red Sox control, while Kansas City Star writer Joe Posnanski says there's something to the rumor.

Wonder if it's just paper work. Or maybe there's more players involved.
