You gave us some great years, Tek, and for what you were, we're very grateful. And thanks for the bounceback year in '07, it was huge for our memories of you.

I wouldn't want to see this guy play for us next year, but I'd throw Brad Mills overboard in a heartbeat to bring Varitek back as the bench coach and heir apparent to Tito. He's still the same old Tek as far as baseball wits goes, but what you can do with that on the field is limited by ability, and Tek's is gone.

Really? A Scott Boras client filed for free agency? REALLY? WOWWWWWWW

Today will go down in history as one of those "where were you when..." moments

Who is going to persue him with the zest and vigor that theo will persue him with?

I am under the impression he is here till he retires since we dont have any legitimate catchers on the roster who can replace him.

he should stop switch hitting,he isnt batting .200 from the left yet from the right he hit .280?? or something that was respectable.

i would think he is inked for 2 years for around 10M unless the sox want to crucify boras for the manny deal and make tek the example.

If I'm not mistaken, Tek filed for free agency in 2004 as well.

I'm w/ you Seany, he should hit right-handed only. But he has more HR's left-handed. Not worth it IMO.

Just because he's filed for free agency' date=' doesnt mean its set in stone he's not coming back[/quote']

Thanks for being the first to point this out.

Okay so Theo has fifteen days to petend he lost Boras' and Tek's phone numbers and we're all in the clear.

Sadly I see Tek coming back. And despite his amazing game intelligence, and his younger playing self, it's his time to hang it up. He just doesn't have the stuff anymore.

I'd love nothing more than to see him as a coach/manager as someone already said here.

Let's say he doesn't comeback, and eventually retires. Does the FO retire his number?

I'm pretty sure we'll have Tek or Kelly Shoppach catching next year. Shoppach makes all the sense in the world considering he already knows the organization and trained under Varitek for a bit. If the Sox are willing to trade Buchholz then I don't see Tek back.

Shoppach is cost-controlled and has monster power. He handled the load of a starting catcher very well for Cleveland last year and is better defensively than the incumbent. You'd be more likely to get Victor Martinez out of the Guardians than Kelly Shoppach, I'm thinking.

I would guess Salty has the highest upside, but he also is probably moving to 1B, and thus probably staying in Texas. I wouldn't be surprised if we got any of the three other catchers (Teagarden, Ramirez or Laird).
