Scouting Report:

Rays: Rays manager Joe Maddon consistently refers to Sonnanstine as a winner, and on Oct. 6, winning was exactly what Sonnanstine did. In Game 4's series-clinching win over the White Sox, Sonnanstine held Chicago to two runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. The fourth member of the rotation, Sonnanstine doesn't light up the radar guns but is a consistent strike-thrower who plays to his strengths. A crafty pitcher, Sonnanstine is at his best when he pitches off his fastball and uses his command to his advantage. Although he received a pair of no-decisions earlier this year, Sonnanstine has pitched particularly well at Fenway, and is a career 1-1 against Boston with a 5.40 ERA.

Red Sox: The veteran knuckleballer didn't pitch in the Division Series, as the Red Sox went with a three-man rotation. Now he enters the mix against a team he has dominated throughout his career, going 19-5 with a 3.32 ERA in 41 appearances. However, Wakefield wasn't as strong against Tampa Bay this season, going 0-2 with a 5.87 ERA in three starts. Wakefield pitched well at Fenway in 2008, going 7-4 with a 3.10 ERA in 14 starts. In League Championship Series play, Wakefield is 5-2 with a 4.50 ERA in nine appearances, five of them starts.

Rays batter Wakefield. Rays complete five game series victory and party on the mound at Fenway.

Gom's predictions are true to his frontrunner form. The more dire the situation gets for the Sox, the more brazen his predictions become. Silence after LAA and game 1. A little noise after game 2. Now he's Kreskin with a bullhorn once they go down 2-1. Predictable and sad.

Anyhow, tonight we stand on a precipice. Not a precipice for the season, that comes Thursday should they lose. If they can come back against the Guardians from 3-1, they can do it against the Rays, so while a loss tonight makes it tougher, it doesn't make it impossible (only 2 in row does that). No, tonight's precipice concerns one of the most selfless players to ever don the uniform for the Sox. Tim isn't just fighting for the Sox season tonight, I feel he's fighting for his Sox life. Postseason magic hasn't blessed his knuckleball since the '03 ALCS. Yeah, yeah, he threw some important relief innings in the '04 ALCS, but he was not "Wake!" during that series. It's been 3 trips to the postseason and 7 postseason series where Tim has proved to be more liability than asset. Tonight, Tim has a chance to end that. Should he do it, I feel the FO will be confident bringing him back at the plush price they can have him for. Should he not, I feel the FO starts considering other viable options who won't only help the team in the regular season but in October as well. Tonight, Wake pitches with it all on the line.

Let this rule the day.

ive never believed in succumbing to the whole "the sky is falling" attitude when 1 win would make this a new series so just win

I always get squirmy when Wakefield plays the Rays. I believe earlier in the season they had a game where they just couldn't get anything going. However, I hope and believe they've got a short memory and with the win last night can calm down and be patient at the plate. I see the Rays not being over-anxious tonight and having a good night off of Wakefield.

I think Sonny will pitch a good game, but the Sox won't go scoreless for the first half like they did last night. Tonight ends up being a close game - the Sox are going to have a short memory from last night and get back to hitting. I just hope the Rays capitalize off of Wake early.

Good luck (but not too much).

Jacoby Ellsbury went 0-for-3 yesterday, his sacrifice fly in the seventh inning the only redeeming moment to his and the Red Sox [team stats]’ 9-1 loss to the Rays in Game 3 of the ALCS.

Ellsbury’s series so far has been terrible. He has not gotten on base in three games. It will be interesting to see if manager Terry Francona decides to keep him atop or anywhere in the lineup for tonight’s Game 4. But after yesterday’s game, he did not indicate any major concerns.

“Today he got the ball in the air; I actually thought he was closer tonight. But still, the ball is getting a little deep on him,” said Francona. “It’s more fighting off some balls instead of driving them or even when he hits the ball to left field. I don’t think he’s pressed.”

Before the game, Francona voiced confidence in Ellsbury. “Because a guy has a tough game or two, you don’t necessarily change the batting order. If there’s a time or place when I think we’re a better team doing something else, I’ll do it.”

Against tonight’s Rays starter Andy Sonnanstine, Ellsbury is 3-for-12 lifetime with one home run, two singles and two RBI.

Francona paid a compliment to the Rays’ ability to neutralize Ellsbury, who hit .333 in the four games of the Division Series against the Angels. Asked if the Rays were attacking Ellsbury differently in this series, Francona said, “No, they’ve executed better.”

OMF Tito wake the f*** up . it hasent just been a game or 2 , its been the whole f***ing playoffs with the exception of game 1 VS the angels

Does he realize that Coco is on the team and that he plays CF?

speaking of coco, I know its just 3 games but here's his line so far

313/455/600/1055

in 10 AB he has 4 hits, 2 of them are doubles , 2 runs scored ( Ellsbury only has that in 32AB )

Coco should be given a chance

We all agree. Is there anyone in Red Sox management discussing this with Francona?

Pedroia then Coco?

Drew 3rd?

I say if anything Bay should move up, he's been hitting the ball in the playoffs.

I like the idea of putting Ortiz between our two best run producers, to try to get him more pitches to hit. I dont know.

He's between two of them right now, and his autopop to deep 2B is only changing the number of outs before Youk hits.

Thats why I think its good to drop him past Youk, so he still has protection, but he also isnt hindering the top of the lineups production.

I wonder how long it will be before the Fenway Faithful start booing Ortiz.

I'd hate to see it...not good for the image of the team, its fans and the FO...could potentially lead to Papi being just one in a long line of "underappreciated" players, further tarnishing the Sox reputation with players. I know I'm looking way down the line, but one can imagine a situation like that coming about.

It's never all that great when a team has to carry a player who's past his prime. Mind you, I don't think it's happened with Ortiz, I think he's still not 100%, but you make a great point about players wanting to come Boston.

wont happen

Why not? I can see it happening this series.

Cause there's a line that few guys can cross where they won't get booed. I don't think pitchers can ever cross that line. Ortiz is there, Varitek is there, Lowell is there, Pedroia might be there.
