Hey All,

This is a very importan question that needs to be answered because i have a 12 pack of beer riding on it. My friend said he went to a Sox Game recently and when the game was over he looked down at the field and they were sweeping the base lines from home plate to 1st and 3rd base. He thinks that the baselines are permanent. Is that right? I assumed that they are painted on each game, i swear when the players run down the lines they kick up white chalk if they hit the lines.

Please does anyone know the answer, what are the baselines made out of?

Thanks All.

Yeah' date=' they definitely paint em every game.[/quote']

I think they're lime, or "chalk".

They would use paint on grass, but lay powdered lines on the clay.

No one gets the beer. Part of the line is permanent (in the picture that's posted above, you can see that it's made of plastic or something on the warning track in left field), and they chalk the lines every game on the infield. So, you're both right and wrong

I don't know what they do at Fenway, but when lime gets wet it congeals a bit and gets a little sheen to it. On most of our local fields, the outfield lines are painted because it's all grass. We have one field with the cut outs all the way to the foul poles and the lime builds up because it's not raked as much out there. That's not to say that there isn't an insert in the lines at Fenway, though.

Someone needs to e-mail the groundskeeper.

"Every few days they rake up the foul lines between home and the outfield and repaint them. They use a combination of paint, chalk, and water. The paint holds the chalk in place and keeps it from making a dusty mess during the game. The water makes the whole brew paintable."

I e-mailed Dave Mellor to try and get a definitive answer on this.
