I am absolutely ecstatic to see Kevin Cash back on a minor league contract, no longer encumbering the 40-man roster.

Kevin Cash is, perhaps, the best defensive catcher I have ever seen play for the Red Sox.

For those who understand what I'm talking about, he had a 111 BP DFT defensive rate while serving as Tim Wakefield's caddy. That's mind-boggling. For contrast, Doug Mirabelli averaged a 90 DFT fielding rate the past two years (21 runs worse per 100 games). Josh Bard had a 33 DFT fielding rate while serving as Wakefield's catcher (yes, 78 runs worse per 100 games...0.78 runs per game worse than Cash defensively).

There is, of course, the minor point that Cash has a career batting line of .167/.223/.265. :( He'll be 30 next year; he's not going to learn how to hit.

What he does offer is the opportunity to promote Kottaras or a different catching prospect who still has option years for a tryout. He offers insurance in case Mirabelli injures himself, perhaps by crashing through the floorboards after the players' buffet. (Have any of you here ever read the song parody "The Wreck of the Doug Mirabelli?") Kevin Cash is a bad hitter but an adequate overall catcher, and he's one of only two catchers on earth proven to be able to catch Tim Wakefield.

Again, I am beyond happy. I am ecstatic. :D

god damn these statistics.

NERD!

Who would you have replace Hinske?

OK found your answer.

Free agent Trot Nixon has been working on his defense at first base in order to increase his versatility.

The Red Sox are looking for a left-handed hitter capable of backing up at first base, and Nixon has his agent asking whether they're interested. They'd probably prefer someone with more power, but it's possible they'll consider him if they can't land Brad Wilkerson.

If Nixon can play first base - I will take him over Hinske any day if the price is right for him.

I know that this is really not on the topic, but I wanted to post this somewhere. I know so many of you here are Patriots fans as well as Sox fans. I just wanted to say congrats on a special season. I know that losing this past Sunday was not the way you wanted it to end, but in every way but that game, the Patriots are the best team in the NFL.

By the way, this is coming from a fan of the team you won your last Super Bowl against.

Now... On to Spring Training!!!

GO SOX!!!

Yeah. It always hurts when your team loses, especially when it's like that. Luckily spring training is just days away. Clean slate :D

I am a Pats fan. Going in I knew there was a chance of them losing. Then when everyone and there brother picked the Pats to win, I had a feeling the Football Gods would step in and shake things up LOL They did have a special season, and them winning 3 SB previouls def makes the loss easier to swallow.

And Amen to Spring Training!

The Red Sox, entering the 2008 season will be the oldest team in baseball at an avg age of 29.8. Though its worth noting that next offseason we could see retirements of Schilling (42), Wakefield (42), Timlin (42) and Mirabelli (38). Sean Casey (34) will also be a free agent. Varitek and Manny as well but I expect them to be back in 2009

But the Yankees will have the fattest team haha

This might be some of the worst predictions ever.

First off, wheres Lowell?

80 innings for Lester?

I love the Sox and would be happy with most of these predictions, but if I'm not mistaken, aren't almost all the hitting stats for the players listed improved stats from last yr? I mean yes I expect some improvement from some, but this looks like it has everyone besides maybe Tek improving from last yr.

But these are predictions so I'll take them with a grain of salt.

Riv where do you get those? I want to see some other teams.

You totally screwed me up there for a minute. You can't call riverside sluggers "riv" because Jacko has been referred to as "riv" even longer than he's been called "Jacko".

The progression is as follows:

1)mjriv

2)bbdoc

3)jacksonianmarch
