2007-2008 Offseason Acquisition Guide

This is the 2007-2008 Offseason Acquisition Guide. This guide lists all players who were/will be acquired by teams during the 2007-2008 Offseason (October 1, 2007-April 1, 2008) via Free Agency, Trade, Waivers, and Rule 5. Letters before the players name determine what type of transaction occured.

 

If there is a t. before the players name, it was a trade. If there is a w. before the players name, it was a waiver pickup. If is a 5. before the players name, it was a Rule 5 pickup, if there is a 5r. before the players name he was returned to his original club by the club that selected him in the Rule 5 draft, and if there is nothing before the players name it was a Free Agent signing.

 

This list only lists players who are joining a new club for the 2008 season, not players re-joining their 2007 club.

 

If you see that there is a move not listed (Major or Minor), please make mention of it throughout the thread, preferably with a link (it could even be a link to a transaction page. Doesnt necessarily have to be to a report specifically mentioning the transaction in question).

 

I will not update the list on a daily basis. usually once or twice a week, depending on my schedule. It will not be the most complete list, as I will not be able to list every minor league Free Agent signing, trade, etc. But this list will be pretty damn close to complete. Like I said, feel free to add contributions to make it more complete.

Decided to start it now as transactions were beginning to occur rather than until after the World Series or into November that way I can just keep up easily rather than being overwhelmed with a bunch of moves that had already occured that I would have to hunt down. That was one of the things that discouraged me last year (along with a busy schedule and having a lot on my hands), so I wanted to prevent it from being an issue this year. Last year not doing this I felt a little out of the loop when Spring Training rolled around and I saw Player A in camp with Club B, and so on.

A few updates. Notably the Yankees signing 2 players from the IBL (Israel Baseball League), which just finished its inagural season. One of the players, 28 year old catcher Eladio Rodriguez is a former Red Sox prospect out of the Dominican Republic.

Twins acquired outfielder Craig Monroe from the Cubs for a player to be named.

 

Leave it to the Twins to find a guy with a worse OBP than anyone else on the market. We hope this is being done with the idea of non-tendering Monroe if he's not willing to accept less than the $4.8 million he made last season. The Cubs were going to non-tender him before the Twins decided it was worth giving up a low-level prospect to acquire his rights. Monroe, who turns 31 in February, hit .219/.268/.370 in 392 at-bats for the Tigers and Cubs last season. He's a career .256/.303/.446 hitter. He'd be a nice guy to have around as a left fielder against lefties and a backup against right-handers, but the Twins can't afford to pay a guy $5 million to play less than regularly and there were better options for that kind of money. We wonder just how much this has to do with his career .322/.356/.544 line versus Minnesota. The Royals are the only team he's been better against.

Tigers acquired LHP Danny Christensen from the Royals to complete the Roman Colon trade.

 

Christensen was likely to be bumped from Kansas City's 40-man roster this winter anyway. The 24-year-old was a major disappointment in Double-A, going 3-15 with a 6.21 ERA in 140 2/3 innings. Of course, it was only a matter of time before Colon was dropped from the Tigers' 40-man roster as well, and there's a good chance neither team ever benefits from this deal.

 

Brewers signed LHP Randy Choate to a one-year, $500,000 contract.

 

Maybe no one but us cares, but that Choate is getting a major league contract could qualify as the most stunning news of the offseason so far. The 32-year-old sidearming lefty has been available frequently enough through the years and seemingly was never pursued by the Brewers before. Choate has a 4.64 ERA and a 129/87 K/BB ratio in 165 innings as a major leaguer. He was up briefly with the Diamondbacks in June and gave up hits to all three batters he faced before being placed on waivers and going unclaimed. He'll battle Mitch Stetter for a bullpen job if the Brewers don't land Ron Mahay or another lefty reliever on their list.

Guardians signed RHP Masahide Kobayashi to a two-year contract with a club option for 2010.

 

Kobayashi, 33, saved 227 games in Japan. He's coming off one of his worst seasons, but he had a 2.95 ERA and 116/29 K/BB ratio in 146 1/3 IP over the last three season. With an 88-91 mph fastball and a quality splitter, he has a chance to be a very good setup man for the Guardians. He'll likely join Rafael Betancourt and Rafael Perez in working the seventh and eighth innings in front of Joe Borowski.
