There's a report circulating that the Red Sox have acquired Eric Gagne from the Rangers for Delcarmen, Breslow and cash. Anyone have any confirmation on this? Would be a pretty big steal if it's true.

How do we know it's totally false?

Because, you can't find the article on the AP website. ESPN or Fox Sports hasn't picked up the story in over two hours.

This one is bunk.

Figures. I dug around for a little while hoping to find something but yeah, all I read was that e-mail that guy posted on sosh. Lame.

Oh well, even with Delcarmen, we pretty much are playing 6 inning games.

I think it was started by someone that posted it on SOSH. He admitted five minutes later that he got it in an e-mail, and wasn't actually sure if it were true. On top of that, it had quotes from Theo Epstien, and you would think it would be all over the place if Theo had actually spoke on the issue. By the way, the thread at SOSH is now closed, and the person who started it deleted his initial post.

This would be a steal?

I was just going to say that. Delcarmen has been great except for yesterday. Breslow was good last year and could be a solid piece if called up. Gagne is expensive, aging, and incredibly injury prone. Either way, it's not happening.

Gagne would probably only be a rental, and wouldn't be a substantial upgrade over Delcarmen, but he is the better pitcher. Breslow and Lopez cancel each other out.

I've read that Gagne will only go to a team where he can close. How true is that?

Not entirely. He can be traded to a few teams, without his consent.

Gagne will probably accept a trade to a contending team. If he's able to pitch in October, and pitch well, that will probably increase his value. (free agency)

Like Crespo said, he can be traded to some teams and not have veto power. But part of the reason he would likely turn down a trade to some teams is he has incentives in his contract for games finished (I think. I know I heard this about someone, and it was either Dotel or Gagne). So he loses money if he gets traded to a team where he wouldn't close.

The trading team will probably guarantee those incentives.

As it stands now, from what I've heard, Gagne can be had by the Sox for Buchholz or Ellsbury. They originally asked the Yankees for Hughes or Chamberlain, and have dropped their demands to Alan Horne or Ian Kennedy.

Unless their demands drop, I can't see him going anywhere. I would think about Horne from our end. We'll see.

From what I've read the Sox won't need to give up Buchholz or Ellsbury to land Gagne. Every team knows those guys are off limits.

I think that is what he is saying.

In terms of Gagne, apparently the Yankees were considered to be close a few days ago, but then Texas upped the ante. It was said that the Rangers liked Jeff Marquez and Tyler Clippard, and I think the Yankees were willing to make that move. Then the Rangers insisted on Kennedy or Horne who are both untouchables at this point and that prompted the Yankees to move Joba to the pen. I wouldnt be surprised if the yankees were out of the running altogether.

SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Red Sox are leading the Yankees and Mets in a three-team race for Eric Gagne.

Newsday says it's close between the same three teams and the Brewers. The general opinion seems to be that Boston has the best offer on the table. However, that might not matter since their on Gagne's no-trade list. The Red Sox would likely have to make it worth his while for Gagne to accept a trade

Who are the sox looking to trade for Gagne? I can't find any names mentioned.

No names are being mentioned in this one, as most of the name throwing involves Dye. But prior to the Yankees pulling the plug on the Gagne train, they had asked for Chamberlain, Kennedy, or Hughes. They were turned down obviously. But now Newsday is reporting that the Rangers wanted a package consisting of Alan Horne and the yankees refused to part with him either. If they are looking for a pitching prospect like Horne, the sox may be in the same predicament as the yankees.

The sox wont deal Lester or Buchholz, that much is understood. The Rangers want pitching on the level of Horne, so the sox may need to include Masterson or Bowden. I am unsure if they are willing to do that.

The thing that complicates things for the Sox is that Gagne can reject a deal to them anyways. I think the Mets are actually the front-runners, mainly because Minaya has a clue.

He does have the no-trade, but he would gladly waive it if the sox give him the money he would be earning for incentives. He has saved games incentives in his contract that would be worth up to 3 mil this season if he were to stay in Texas and continue to save games. If the sox were willing to part with a top prospect, I dont think they wouldnt be willing to throw an extra 3 mil Gagne's way.

ive heard Murphy and Gabbard' date=' dont know how realistic that is though[/quote']

that sounds totally unrealistic. Murphy projects as nothing more than a 4th OFer and Gabbard is really more of a 5th starter/spot guy. If they had a shot at a top prospect, they'd do better than Murphy and Gabbard.

yeah sounds crazy, that would be a steal though.

it really all depends whether Tom Hicks feels he can re-sign Gagne long-term. otherwise, if Murphy and Gabbard is the best package being offered, and reports are that the Sox have the best offer on the table, the Rangers pretty much have to take it

Nothing yet on Eric Gagne this a.m., though the reports out of Texas suggested that owner Tom Hicks may be trying to sign him to an extension and they're going to hold onto him.
