I guess Tito wanted him to go 5 to get the opportunity for a win.:thumbdown

If that's the case, Tito has to stop thinking about individuals and think about the team. I heard him today on WEEI defending Manny playing shallow in left. He is a players' manager to a fault.

Jon Lester sucks again tonight.....I'm starting to not care so much about him. David Pauley puts up the same numbers.

Strange to think about it but....we talk about Clay Buchholz the same way we talked about Jon Lester last season. Maybe we should just trade these guys for proven players. I mean honestly....when is the last time we developed a Johan Santana, Roy Oswalt, Carlos Zambrano, Roy Halladay, etc....

He may only be a 5 inning pitcher. We don't know if his secondary pitches are good enough to get him through an order 3 times. He's an awesome closer. Why mess with excellence?

Papelbon will be in the rotation next year or the year after. He's potentially better than any of the other options, cheaper, currently owned, and more easily replaceable.

He needs to get more than 70 IP in a season.

He wants to close. He's a proven closer. Schill will be back, Gabbard can take Taverez' spot.

Very true....he throws fastball and splitter....thats about it

I've seen him throw a very average slider and attempt to throw a curve in spring training. His curves usually end up in the stands (Hunter's bomb still hasn't come down)

When I saw him throw in person last spring I was completely underwhelmed after hearing so much about him. There was no 95 mph heater, no pinpoint command. He walked 3 in a row and he was throwing upper 80's at best. I got beat up all over this site for my evaluation.

He wasn't in the minors, when he steam rolled through everyone.

We don't know if his secondary pitches are good enough to get him through an order 3 times.

They were good enough in 2005, and throughout his career in the minors.

Because he might be an ace.

I'm sorry, but I can't bank on Gabbard and Schilling to stabilize this rotation. We won't even know what we'll get out of Schilling until after the trade deadline - meaning we need to make an impact trade.

Are we going to blame the offense again if we lose tonight? No way KC should be scoring 6 runs.

Nice HR for the powerless over the hill Ramirez.

Seriously. Our major need is a starter. The offense is ugly at times and yeah, it'd be nice to have some help there, but we need some major help in the rotation. Wakefield is our 3rd starter right now. He should be our 5th.

Yeah' date=' how disappointing he's been [/quote']

Great sample size.

He came into that game with a WHIP of 1.51, and a career 3.9 BB/9 ratio in the minors. That regression to the mean is going to suck, when we're fending off the Yankees in August.

Oh, well. At least Papelbon will look SUPER COOL as a closer.

He's had 12 outings since June. 12.

Great use of the best pitcher on the team.

bingo' date=' we can put papelbon in the rotation and trade for a setup man for OKI[/quote']

I'm skeptical that Papelbon has the stamina built up to move to starter this season.

He will be and should be the closer for the 07 season. However, the Okajima comment wasn't far off. Especially if MDC keeps this up.
