What do you expect him to be hitting?

Say he does manage to finish the season around .280 with 15HR and 380OBP. Is that really worth $14 million? I mean, he really is only worth 20HR max and has only hit 100RBI's once, so what exactly is he getting $14 million for? For $14 million, I want to see more production.

No he might not be worth 14M, but when other free agent OF such as Gary Matthews JR gets 5 yrs 50 or 55M and Juan Pierre got his ridiculous deal, then your going to have to give Drew a little more since he is a better player then the 2 previously mentioned. Its how the market was. Ya the Sox gave JD more then they offered Damon, but Damon would have got a 6 or 7 yr deal approaching over going over 100M last offseason. It was a bloated market, they signed the best available player to play RF and hit 5th. Yes we could have had Nixon for 1 yr and saved a bunch of money, but he was basically becoming a sure out and was falling apart infront of us. Lets give JD some time, maybe even a season which I have already said I was willing to give him from the get go...

around 280 with an OBP around 380

So you are expecting him to hit at a .310 clip and collect around 100 more hits with the reminder of the season? Do you really think he can average close to 1 hit a game for the reminder of the season?

Sounds like Abreau.

I love it when you guys get on each other. That's what this board needs, a little fire. About the only ones I haven't brawled with at one time or another is Shillingouttheks and Yeszir.

Yeah these guys all suck. Lets get rid of them all, then that way maybe we have a chance at first place....I mean.........

Seriously, what is the problem?

Coco sucks.....we win anyway and personally, this is exactly what I expected him to do.....because I never though he was all that great to begin with. His injury probably hurts him....but I still always go back to the trade where Cleveland really wanted nothing to do with him anyway. They gave him to us for a good prospect(who hasnt done anything since) and a backup catcher.

Lugo Sucks.....he does other nice things besides hit .300

Mirabelli sucks....He is a backup catcher, a very good defensive one to boot.

Romero sucks......considering we had zero expectations of him after last season, and many thought he wouldnt even make the team i think hes done ok.

Drew sucking is the only one that hurts truly, because it is clear he is much better than this. Track records dont lie though, and when you factor in his age....he should come around.

Take a look at the newspaper today and look at the AL East standings.....we are doing pretty good with all of these "sucky" players as you call it.

You have to remember, 90% of the time, a player wont play above their career average after a slump. If a player slumps for the first 2 months of the season, it is most likely that if they are to break out of the slump, that they hit at their career averages, so Drew would hit around .280. If he does that, He will end the season around .260 average, so on. Expecting a player to play WAY above their career numbers just to meet those numbers at the end of the season is HIGHLY unrealistic.

Of course, this asssumes that those career averages are static rates. Some players tend to be streaky. So, the .280 average at the end of a year was made up of a few .330 periods and a few .230 periods. Over 162 games, it tends to even out. We saw the other Drew in ST and the first few weeks, and when he's hot, it's scalding. Him bouncing back to his career averages is certainly possible, and given his streakiness, absolutely within the realm of realistic.

Oh wait, I didn't all-caps a word, you might not understand. REALISTIC. There, whew.

We haven't brawled because I can respectfully and calmly disagree with people :) Respectfully and calmly being the key words there. It's complete stupidity that gets me fired up. As much as I may disagree with you at points, you're not stupid.

Nomah'sHammSammich has been known to overreact quite a bit on this board...so I'm not going to get all pissed yet. But JESUS CHRIST, IT'S BEEN TWO MONTHS. Start worrying if he's still sucking in September...hell, I'll even give the new guys the whole year to get it figured out. If they come back next year sucking some major cock, then I'll start showing my irritation with them. But holy hell, if a 100-win season hit some of these people in the face (I'm looking at you NHS), they would still find something wrong with it. It's absolutely amazing. Despite him not performing to the level we'd like him to, Drew is still getting on base about 30ish points above average. It's not great, but it's a start. Let's not forget that he did actually go balls to the wall and took a NASTY spill into the RF wall. I don't care how fragile you are, something like that will mess your body up for awhile.

You'll see me getting on players AFTER I give them some time. Jesus, we still have the best record in baseball despite losing 5 of the last 6, and some people are still finding things to bitch about. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Teams have slumps, we've known that because we're Red Sox fans. And now that we finally have a team that we can be extremely proud of during the first 2 months of the season, so many of us have become spoiled. So, on behalf of the rational fans of Red Sox Nation:

CHILL THE f*** OUT.

ORS you are right. It is within the realm of realistic for JD Drew to get hot enough to end at .280, but it is also in the realm or realistic for him not too. I guess the only real answer and the only thing that really matters is WHO THE f*** KNOWS. I wish him well and thats about all that can be said.

You are putting way too much emphasis on Jd Drew and whether or not he will hit .280.

He sucks right now, that is clear....but the thing is, it doesnt matter. Whats the difference of us winning by 5 with JD going 0-4 or us winning by 8 with him going 2-5? Whats the difference if he goes 0-5 in a win, or 5-5 in a loss? Does it make that much of a difference? We are winning regardless. In terms of JD Drew, the only thing that matters is that when other hitters start going through their slumps that JD starts hitting. I dont care if he hits .250 for the year....i dont care if its .260....it doesnt really matter. Its not my money and we can debate about his value all day and whether or not he earns it, but the on field performance has little to do with that since it is not our money. If he starts hitting the ball when it matters.....like when the team needs someone to pick them up.

This is not to defend him either, as I think he looks like a pussy up there swinging the stick lately. If we were losing this would be a much bigger deal than it is right now, but again...were playing pretty good ball lately. (minus this Oakland series, where it seems like the time zone change is especially killing them thanks to the marathons with the Yankees)

Coco Crisp....the guy hits like a little b..itch. He is an automatic out....Deal him for whatever you can get... At this point...Ellsbury cannot do any worse. At least with Willy Mo you have the THREAT of the LONG Ball... Coco's only threat is a drag bunt...he is pathetic.

J.D. Drew...he is a pussy. He swings like a 90 year old man. No wonder they took so long to finalize his deal...He has perfected the "soft as a baby's ass" grounder to second.

I know..due to his ridiculous contract we are probably stuck with him. I hope he blows his shoulder out..at least we can be rid of him at minimal cost.

J.C. Romero....absolutely putrid... The guy walks more guys than he K's...his whip is above 2.00! He should be in AA with those numbers... He is a waste of space..I am sure he will be LONG gone when Timlin and Lester return...thank god.

Two guys I would love to see gone are Lugo and Mirabelli.. Wtf is Lugo's problem??? .220?? Are you freaking kidding me? $10 mill for a .220 hitter who is at best, an average defensive SS? I dont care how many SB's or RBI's he has..he has been absolutley horrific at the plate. Again...with his ridiculous contract..we are stuck with him.

Mirabelli is the biggest JOBBER in the big leagues..This clown hits at single A level. He has NO discipline and has a swing as big and long as his Gargantuan Shnozz. If it wasn't for Wakefield he would be selling condoms at 7-11.

I am also just about fed up with Wakefield...he has sucked real bad lately...and it would almost be worth getting rid of Wakefield to not have to see Mirabelli embarrass himself at the plate anymore. I think we are better off with Tavarez starting than Wakefield anyhow..I think Julian and Lester are better than Wakes.. Sorry if that is unpopular..but it is true..

We need to get a good backup catcher. Trade for Saltamachia from ATL or Damian Miller from Milwaukee...someone,..anyone...when Wakefield pitches we have to have 3 automatic outs in the lineup in Drew/Mirajobber and Choco Stiff.

Get a decent hitting backup catcher....and possibly deal Bowden/Murphy/Crisp/MDC/and Hansen for Ichiro or Tori Hunter... We have the team to win it all this year with a few adjustments.

I'm not one to promote "Linda" on this site, but she nailed it:

Wily Mo is GARBAGE. Sox got suckered into giving up Bronson for the Puerto Rican Pedro Serrano. You know, Joe Boo!

That POS should be DHing in Kansas City, but the Red Sox think he is the next David Ortiz.

NEWFLASH: HE ISN'T!!!

Choi was the next Ortiz. Now he is the Ortiz in the Korean League.

As a Dodger fan, I have seen both of these players suck ass on the baseball field and piss off all Dodger fans.

I realize it is only a matter of time before you all see the light (or the darkness for that matter).

you forgot an option for neither one

Lugo wont be disappointing. He'll be a bad D SS. He'll run a bit. He'll hit .280 and be a pest on the basepaths. You cannot make judgements when you take a starter and bench him on the left coast.

Bingo' date=' I also like his career .330 batting avg at Fenway Park. He should have a stat line like .280, 7 HRs, 65 RBIs, 110 Runs, 20-25 SBs[/quote']

I actually think Drew will put up surprising numbers this year and maybe for a couple or three.

I don't really even want to merit her thread with a reply but my answer is neither. There both upgrades to the prior player at there respective positions. Agon was better D but Lugo's bat is far and away better the AGON's' date=' and his glove will be enough to get the job done. Drew if healthy, is a better hitter then Trot in every category that comes to mind, and his D should be as good or better.[/quote']

Based on Red Sox' fans expectations of Drew (They seem to be low from what I've seen/heard)' date=' I don't see either as a dissapointment. However, if I had to choose one of these guys, it'd be Drew. I think Lugo is going to be just fine.[/quote']

Neither.

Ok fine here's a bet. I bet you that in Lugo's 1st month with the Red Sox' date=' he'll be batting .270 or better. Winner picks what avatar the loser has to have for a week.[/quote']

No problem. Ill take that bet.

I have a photo of Schilling f***ing a goat. It'll look good under your username.

f***ing owned.

I regret JD Drew allready...

we look at it as an upgrade because he's better than Trot Nixon. Even if he goes on the DL' date=' he'll be better than what we got out of Trot Nixon. Nixon went on the DL just as much in the past. We like the signing because either way you look at it, we have an upgrade in RF.[/quote']

This is the dumbest f***ing thread BTW. I like both signings so how about an third option that says "Go f*** Yourself' date=' they're both good"?[/quote']

yeah i said the same thing myself i like both signings and i think they will do really good this year for the sox

I think it's safe to say that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays could win the NL West.

Touche. But when we get to July and they are still hitting .220 are you going to continue to be in denial?

Face it, Lugo and Drew were bad signings. Theo did well by fetching us Dice-K, but he misjudged those two.

IT'S TWO MONTHS INTO THE SEASON. STOP s***ing YOUR PANTS.

I wonder if the guys at Dodger Blues get together and randomly decide to take a visit over here. They come in bunches.

I'll wait a little longer than 2 months into the season before I get on Drew's or Lugo's back. Some people's impatience is laughable.
