The Sox are hot right now, everyone knows it. W've just got into June and luckily with only Beckett's injury. But are we too good for our own good? Do we have suitable replacements for are starters should something happen?

I know we've got a great lead right now, but I don't want to see anything happen that could stall us out of first.

Injuries are unpredictable, they can happen to anyone. We've put ourselves in a damn good position to overcome injuries with our lead.

Anyways, if a starter gets injured, here are our backups:

1. Julian Tavarez (when Jon Lester returns)

2. Kason Gabbard

3. Devern Hansack

4. David Pauley

5. Daniel Haigwood

Tavarez has been solid in the 5th spot, Gabbard was good in his only start this year, and uhh hopefully we don't have to use Hansack. Pauley sucked last year. Haigwood is on the 40 man roster, was acquired from Texas this year.

For relievers, we have:

Craig Breslow

Manny Delcarmen

Craig Hansen

Edgar Martinez

Kyle Jackson

Emergency position players:

C-George Kottaras-Solid prospect, has great plate discipline. But as we learned in 01 and 06, we cannot lose Tek. He is crucial to this team.

1B-Eric Hinske-Already with the team. No prospects are close to the big club.

2B-Alex Cora-Would start if Pedroia got hurt. Jeff Natale, Jed Lowrie are waiting in the wings.

3B-Kevin Youkilis-Would play 3rd if Lowell got hurt, and Hinske would move to 1st. Chad Spann is waiting in the wings.

OF-WMP, Hinske-The obvious 2 backup options. Brandon Moss and David Murphy are the first two minor league options, as I doubt they want Ellsbury up so soon.

Hey Coco, great analysis and projection on your part. Looking at that list I would say it is a mixed bag at best, so we had better not have happened what happened last summer. ME??? I'm worried about only one thing----TONIGHT'S GAME!!!!! I know we changed our rotation to get Beckett and Schilling pitching in this series and I totally agree with that. However, why drop Julian instead of Wakefield. Tim has been dreadful against the Yankees this season and Taverez has beaten them twice. Besides, to pitch Wake means we have to add another stiff into our lineup in Mirabelli who isn't worth a damn offensively to us. Tonight we face a good pitcher with a slumping Drew, Crisp, Lugo and now Mirabelli in the lineup. God help us all this evening if the first three don't do some damage with the rest of our crew and Tim suddenly rediscovers his once magic against the Yankees. Again, I think Julian should open up tonight.

Hey Fred - Been awhile, but as usual I do agree with you, though maybe not as strongly. I love Wake for all the reasons everyone else does...but ubtil he gets into the flow, and the knuckler shows it is doing what Wake wants, his starts scare hell out of me!! With the MFY, I would prefer Julian based on his body of work, and killer attitude, start. Being the self-defitists the Sox Nation is as a whole (justifiably so), we lose the first game and the world is comming to an end!! 1978 all over!! Like Thumper, I am always scared when they com to town, or we go there.

Julian can give you 5 innings and then more likely than not, he'll self-destruct. And when he self-destructs, he lacks the ability to get out of jams. We don't want our bullpen used anymore than it has to be this series. As long as the Sox take 1 game, the Yanks only gain 1 on us in the standings. And while we should be looking to take every single game and make the lead insurmountable, we just need to keep the Yankees at bay. Wake is an innings eater and chances are that Schilling and Beckett will go at least 6. Basically the Sox would rather have an idea about what they're going to get from their starters rather than worrying whether or not they're going to need the bullpen for more innings than usual. Since Julian is unpredictable, I can understand them not wanting to throw him out there.

Besides, if Wake was skipped in the rotation, don't you think Wake would feel a little bit of disrespect? Julian's the 5 in the rotation so he expects to be moved around. I don't know about you, Fred, but I'd rather have our 5 starter going up against a weak A's lineup than the Yankees' lineup.

I think we have about the deepest team in baseball. We have a lot of versatile players. Cora can play all the infield positions except first. Hinske can play all the corners, infield and outfield. Kyle Snyder could start if we needed him too. When Lester comes back, if someone goes down, Tavarez can take starts. Oki can close if something happens to Papelbon. This team has plenty of back up options that give us a legitmate chance to win, and thats whats special. Our ace was just on the DL, and over those 15 days we didn't miss a beat.

Well Schill, I still worry about Tim pitching against the Yankees since he has had little success against them the last year or so. I would like to get this first game with the Yankees very badly. I think it would have vast importance in our laying down the law in the AL East. I want to do nothing that will give the Yankees hope.
