Cabrera rips Yankees fans

'They don't appreciate good baseball,' says Angels shortstop, who praises fans in Anaheim and Boston.

New York — The New York Yankees might have the most fans, but they don't have the best fans. So says Angels shortstop Orlando Cabrera.

"They don't appreciate good baseball," he said. "They just appreciate the Yankees beating up on everybody."

The Yankees are on pace to lead the major leagues in attendance for the fifth consecutive season, with fans spoiled by a team that has won 26 World Series championships and has not missed the playoffs since 1993.

But those fans can turn venomous toward opposing players — and even toward their own, when performance is not in line with expectations.

Cabrera played in Boston, another city with a loud and loyal fan base, before joining the Angels. He gives Red Sox and Angels fans high marks for supporting the home team through tough times and applauding great plays by the visiting team.

"In Boston, they admire baseball," Cabrera said. "In Anaheim, those fans are some of the best in baseball. They know you care there. They know you can't do it every day. I appreciate that.

"These people here, they're mean. And they're really mean to the other team."

Cabrera said the hostility in the stands has increased this season, with the Yankees below .500.

"When we came here last year, they were in first place, so it was OK," he said. "Now they're just looking for an excuse."

He is not bothered, he says, by whatever language Yankees fans direct his way.

"When people say [stuff], they only motivate me," he said. "They're bad losers."

And why exactly didn't Theo resign Cabrera for '05? I love the guy. Great player, great attitude, great guy, and obviously helped us win a WS! That is soo true, he hit the nail on the head.

Theo wanted a guy with a bigger bat playing shortstop and he also felt O-Cab didn't have a high enough on base % so he went out and got Renteria. Obviously, he regrets that move now and I'm sure he wishes he kept Cabrera. I watched him for years here in Montreal before he went to Boston and he was always a pleasure to watch. Great guy, great player

He is absoultely right.

Of course you would think that.

I honestly don't know what's so shocking and newsworthy about an opposing player and Red Sox fans bashing fans of the New York Yankees.

In all honesty, if the sox were a bajillion games below .500, I don't know that we'd still be so nice to opposing teams.

Because normally, opposing teams' players don't bash the other fanbase.

And he's right. You guys can be absolutely venomous. It obviously doesn't ring true for every single fan, but let's remember that you guys were booing A-Rod last year when he hit .290 with 35 jacks and 121 RBIs on an OFF YEAR. His off year is a career year for 90% of the league. When most Yankee fans don't see what they like (because they've been spoiled with greatness for the past 14 years), they let everyone have it because they don't know what it's like to sit through a team that has a crappy season (or, they've forgotten...considering the Yankees haven't missed the playoffs since 1993).

Whatever, this is a stupid debate to get into. But O-Cab's statements are supported by a majority of Yankees fans' behavior over the past couple of years.

Sure, it's a possibility. But we know what it's like to watch a sucky team. Yankees fans don't...or haven't needed to for the past 17 years. Besides, they've had great seasons over the past two years and they treat A-Rod like he's not putting the numbers up.

I was one who wanted ocab back and hated the rent signing, and i still wish we had him. I remember an interview (on weei i think) this past year where theo said he screwed up and should have kept ocab...at least he owns up to it. With regard to the comments; one thing ocab should take into account too is that he is one of the 25 from 2004....he has a free pass in this town forever as long as he doesn't go to the yanks.

Its pretty funny that he says this considering SI did a players poll this week in their magazine. The question was If you could play for any major league team other than your own, which one would it be? The Yankees tied with the Padres and Braves for first. So I guess the Yankee fans arent that bad.

what??? they want to play there because usually the yanks spend so much money that they are always in contention, that and fans actually show up to the games...and if you play there you probably get paid pretty well. I am also guessing that ocab didn't vote for NY

Every off-season the fans "poor behavior" havent stopped them from getting anyone they want and at the end of the day thats what matters. So again who cares if Orlando Caberea doesnt like NY? Because I certainly dont. Clearly its rip on the Yankees and their fans now that they are down and struggling.

No, the whole point was that Yanks fans release their anger on the players, regardless of team, because of the Yankees' sucky play. It has nothing to do with ripping on the Yankees because their down and out.

And I think playing with the Yankees has more to do with being overpaid and having the best shot at a title rather than the fans.

Besides, what the hell player thinks about how they're going to be treated when they struggle when they sign a new contract? I'd assume being a fan of any team has a lot more to do with the organizations tradition, the money they throw around, and whether or not they will be in contention than it does a teams fan base -- for better or worse.

The point remains...who cares? The fans arent stopping free agents from coming so I dont care what 1 PLAYER has to say.

I think Cabrera's argument is that Yankee's fans don't respect baseball itself. They only want to see the Yankees beat up on other teams. One of his points was that Red Sox and Angels fans tip their cap to an opposing team making a great play, even when we are losing. The typical Yankee fan's don't. It's not just about ripping into players from opposing teams or their own, but just not respecting the game of baseball.

people with short memories dont remember the 17,000 deep crowds the yanks would draw on a tuesday in may when they sucked

winning brings more expensive tix

more wealthy fans and a less pugilistic audience

theyre far more behaved now than they were in the late 80s early 90s

The Angels fans need a monkey to get going. They come late and leave early. At least the Yankees fans actually care.

What Angels fans? Only a few diehard Angel fans know who the manager was before Scioscia, and they're the only ones who know about the 1982 and 1986 ALCS chokes. The typical Angel fan in SoCal can only remember as far back as 2002. Cabrera is just catering to his home base.

Half of Angel Stadium was blue during the Freeway Series.

i believe it was terry collins...., but i digress, back to the original point, i believe the only reason players still say they want to play in new york is the $$$ that comes along with that. also, last i checked vlad guerrero didnt want anything having to do with playing in new york. outside of pettite, (which after subpar years in houston is desperate to recapture/relive his best years) what FA wants to be in NY?
