Jon Lester is ready for the Sox rotation but they are taking thier time with him!!!!

Jon Lester allowed one run over five innings in a minor league rehab start Thursday at Triple-A.

Lester set down the first 11 batters he faced, before eventually allowing one run on five hits and a walk. He struck out just one batter, but needed only 65 pitches to record 15 outs. Lester now has a 1.62 ERA in 16 2/3 innings at Pawtucket, but the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox "are expected to use the full 30 days to let him build arm strength."

If this is what you are going to bring to the board, then, and don't take this the wrong way, but I think I liked you better when you took 14 months off between posts.

Lester still has a lot of work to do before he's ready to battle an MLB lineup. First of all, he's still recovering his stamina from an offseason of cancer treatment. Then his rehab got delayed by forearm cramping. A kid who has yet to throw more than 65 pitches in an outing in the last 9 months is not ready to compete at the ultimate level. He needs to show he's ready to dump the pitch-count, and do it with good results, and then sustain for a few starts before he should get consideration.

Agreed ORS. It's not like they desperately need him right now anyway. Tavarez is pitching admirably (for now), and Gabbard looks like he can fill in nicely. Unless something is wrong with Shill (last couple of outings were ugly), Lester's timetable shouldn't be pushed up for any reason.

I was just saying, He's looked really good!.....Tavarez scares me even though he has pitched well lately!!!!

Why does he scare you if he has pitched well? He's got a hot streak going, and he's doing a lot better than many people have expected. Jt is a Yankee killer right now, and he helped us avoid a sweep on Tuesday with his fantastic pitching. I can't wait for his next start to see him pitch. I hope he keeps it up.

Plus if Lester is ready, we don't have room for him. Beckett is coming back form the DL, Schill and Wake are getting hit hard right now, but they've proven that their stellar pitchers, and Dice-K and JT are on hot streaks. There is no room for Lester now. Maybe we'll need him in a month if we have an injury, but we're good right now.

Good work ORS. Lester needs the yr. He showed some arm issues that may or may not have been serious and he is right about where a long reliever should be. Give him a long time.

Yeah there's no reason to rush Lester, though I definitely want to see him back in the majors by mid-July, early-August. Tavarez has such a rubber arm that even if he continues to pitch well, he would likely be able to carry that into the bullpen and Lester would provide us with a very potent #5.

if beckett can pitch the rest of the season without going on the DL and JT can keep giving us decent out outings i wouldn't even bring him back this year

Schilling, Wakefield and Beckett don't have two wins against the Yankees this year. I think Tavarez is doing much better than expected and in the big spots.

It makes no sense to rush him, and no, he's not ready. He's still building up his arm strength even though the results have been pleasant.

2.2IP 5H 3ER 3BB 2K in his last start. There is speculation that he will be optioned once his 30 day rehab stint ends in a few days. With Tavarez pitching serviceably, the sox are playing it slow, as they should.

the thing with lester that scares me is he had a whip that was among the worst in baseball last year. he had runners on base all day. that catches up to kids eventually.

lester needs to work on keeping the runners off base. he has some serious poise, and buckles down under pressure, so i like his potential a lot. just has to step up from the start of the inning through the end, and not just when he has RISP.

oh...my...god. A non..troll...post. And he brought up a good argument. Wow. Floored.

i'm not a troll. i just don't think that intentionally tanking 2005 by going with matt clement over pedro was a good move, and i think that the discounted price of $52 mill for 4 years of petey was a good bargain.

but i'm a sox fan and i love this team, even if our GM sucks and too many of the fans are clement lovers.

Lester was activated from the DL yesterday' date=' but optioned to AAA. He is not going to make a start on Friday in Boston as previously believed.[/quote']

According to Theo....in this assignment if you will....he will have no restraints. He will throw 100 pitches if the circumstances are right. No more pitch counts for him. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

He'll be on a PC. They will be stupid not to give him one.

Listen man, you guys have a huge lead. Tavarez is pitching better than the average 5th starter. Lester is coming off cancer, a poor start, and an arm scare. Right now, his PC is at about 65 pitches. They will increase that by 5 every start and once he gets to about 100-110, he'll be major league ready. Bringing him up right now is a poor move.

Agreed...if Tavarez starts sucking the house again, then it might expedite the process...but as of right now, there's no huge need. Better safe than sorry.
