Did one of the broadcast guys just say "it's easier to steal 3rd off of Petite than it is 1st"?

EDIT: "on the yankee feed"

It is on almost every lefty. The runner's lead at 2nd is behind the pitcher, so they don't control the running game as well. For the RHP they can see the runner and know when the lead has gotten too big.

EDIT: Oops, thought you meant 2nd, didn't see the 1st at first. Yeah, that about sums up their broadcast team.

these guys talk too much, but they are right on this point. You typically dont want to show your whole arsenal out of the gate, which is something DMats does. Then again, he doesnt get hit all that hard anyway, so shut up.

Umm, if you can throw five pitches for strikes, why wouldn't you?

because if you show the entire arsenal first time around, they will adjust. That is why most pitchers throw a ton of fastballs 1st time through and start mixing in the breaking balls later.

Yeah, I really don't agree with that. That an old baseball colloquialism that is just wrong. The more the hitter has to guess in each AB is better, so have the full arsenal out early. If you are 2-3 pitches early, they don't have to look for the other ones.

Oh, OK.

So you can sit breaking ball say, 60% of the time against Matsuzaka.

Thing is, he throws four of them at varying speeds, arm angles, and locations.

Pettite is leaving everything up right now.

Like that.

If a pitcher can put his pitches where he wants to and has enough of them to change speeds, trajectory and location, then it doesn't matter if he shows them all in the first AB. Matsuzaka's style is to get his offspeed stuff located first and then use the FB all a setup pitch (that's not how he pitched last time though).

Good start for a crooked number inning.......YOUKS!!!

A crooked number before any outs are made? Yeah, that's a good start for a crooked number inning.

Heheh, well mlb.tv has a lag, and it was 3-1 when I typed that. I figured he was about to walk.

2007 Youk > 2004 Millar

Come on, much better

I agree with this, though there are some here who may argue with you, or who will at least try to devalue Youkilis.

I think this guy is an extremely valuable player. He can play both corners and sees as many pitches as Abreu and some of the other amazing players. Let him get used to it a little bit and I think he can put up a really good season (.295/.400/.500) while playing what I consider to be + defense at 1B.

Fair enough. I thought you were just being a wiseguy.

Ha ha, I said 'wiseguy' (like Wally Cleaver).

Wrong half of the inning, but I like what I see from Matsuzaka so far. He seems to use his wildness as part of his arsenel, making people think that he's trying to throw a take-strike fastball down 2-1, which turns out to be a slider down and away, or a change down and away. He has a lot of different options and I think he uses the count differently than others do.

It is ideal to get up 0-2 every time. Unless you know the other team is swinging at the first pitch, in which case you use their eagerness against them. I'm not saying everything he is doing is intentional, but you can easily see why he gets so many K's.

well going to lay down for a little while (back spasms something real bad). Enjoy the game.

Feel better bro. I remember getting painful ailments that kept me from watching baseball... October 2003, August 2006... I've been there!

4 K's in 2.3 IP

That was a good pitch, but Dougy is going to get tossed because the Yankees can't afford to have anyone else tossed. He's taking one for the team.
