Brian Cashman, you fool! Why oh why did you not give up Melky (.371 BA in July, August) and a top pitching prospect like Joba (6 Ks in 2 appearances) for Eric Gagne?

If you are going to show your ass with comments like that, at least have the courage to post them in the Sox game thread where they have relevance.

And get a bunch of "Stop spamming our game threads rarararara" ? No thanks. It's relevant here; I heard plenty of people going after Brian Cashman and the Yankees for not going after Gagne.

Melky is coming into his own as one of the 10 best CFers. Man' date=' he is solid. He and Cano will be a nice foundation for the next 10-15yrs.[/quote']

Easy there Jacko. Melky is a decent young player, but an elite CF? I don't think so. His range is average for a CF, his arm is plus for a CF, but his bat lacks the power and he doesn't have much of an eye for walks. Is he good? Yes. Is he elite? No. He's in a power position, and not a power hitter.

Now if you compared Cano, different story.

I did, for Alan Horne. Not for anyone else really.

It's still a Sox site. No matter where you post it, it's the same thing, trolling. Chickenshit.

Someone's a little bitter. Just remember, not my fault you have Gagne 'setting up.' :dunno:

Not bitter at all. In fact, I'm laughing at you. Just remember, not my fault you choose to talk baseball on a site dedicated to your rival.

That's good; we're all laughing in that case. You get to laugh at me and I get to laugh as Gagne blows a(nother) lead.

Yeah, I agree, we are both laughing at something rather pathetic. Well played.

Judging Gagne on five outings is not the smartest thing to do.

On top of that, looking at the free agent class for next year (in terms of centerfielders), giving up Melky for him might not have been the worst idea, especially if they thought they had a decent chance to re-sign him (which I have no idea if they would have).

Imagine that' date=' an above average team beding over and taking it from the Yanks. Can't imagine where I heard that before. http://www.talksox.com/forum/individual-game-discussion-forum/9523-august-7th-anaheim-most-pathetic-game-season-7.html#post281984[/quote']

I think I'm usually fair about all stuff Yankee and Red Sox related, and I don't let my bias show in my posts, but that statement (if you're being serious) is just ridiculous.

The Yankees swept a first place team on the road not because the other team "bending over", but because the Yankees outplayed them in every facet of every game. I'm not looking for you to give them any credit, and I understand that you're frustrating (we've both been there this season, believe me), but don't attribute the Yankees winning games to the other team just not playing well. The Yankees, believe it or not, had something to do with it.

Dealing away Melky would have been an awful idea. He is hitting over .300, OBP'ing around .350 and starting to hit with some minimal power. He is our CFer of the future, well, until he gets too rotund to play CF.

Would you take him over Aaron Rowand and Torii Hunter?

In what context?

I was just bringing up the point that some people think that traded away Melky would be a terrible idea. All I was saying is that there are some pretty good centerfielders that will be free agents next year, and if you sign one of those guys trading away Melky wouldn't be the worst thing.

Melky is 23 and controlled for 4 more yrs. He is not on Hunter's level on either end of the bat aside from contact and BA, but to be honest with you, I'd take the whole package of Cabrera since he could be entering his prime while Hunter is just leaving his. In terms of Rowand, I have never been a huge fan of his. He is hitting well these days, but he also is much older.

That's fair. Both Hunter and Rowand are older, so I could see why you would want to keep Melky over them. However, I also think Rowand is a better player than Melky, in almost every facet, so I'd probably rather have him.

The one thing that really bothers me about Melky is his inability to hit LHP.

Since you're talking about the now and beyond, I'd take Cabrera. Hunter looks like he's losing a step in the outfield, and I'm wary of Rowand's flukey performance with the bat. Rowand's going to cost $10 million, and Hunter might get $15 million or more. Cabrera is going to come close to replicating what they do offensively*, and he'll probably better them defensively. Plus, he's about $14,000,000 cheaper. The Yankees can use that coin on Zambrano, or another pitcher.
