Game over 10-3 Yankee win.

We have won 2 straight series, 6 of 8 games and have gained 4 games on the sox in that span. Good spurt, but is it too little, too late? Likely IMO. The sox wont stay this off for too long.

Well, you should be winning a lot more games now that we're going into interleague play. You have the f***ing Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend...we have the hot D-Backs. Granted, both of our teams should give it to the NL without lube no matter who we play...but I sincerely hope that the Sox' offense meets them in Arizona this time.

Well, we play the Diamondbacks too, so that really shouldn't matter. Also realize, we play the Mets EVERY year, and they have been the best team in the NL for the last few years. So you guys have no right to bitch about the interleague schedule.

The way I look at it, we need to make up one game a week in the standings. I know it is a lot to ask for, but we are six games behind Detroit in the loss column for the wild card. I'll worry about Boston after/if we catch Detroit. Hopefully the Mets can help us out a bit in Detroit. I hope we can gain a game in the standings this weekend on Detroit. If we can catch Detroit by the All-Star break, see you in the ALCS.

Pretty bold statement coming from the man that counted his own team out in May :)

I wasn't bitching about the schedule. My tone was angry because of our flat play and we have to play a hot team, and I'm concerned that you'll gain a game. I'm not bitching about the schedule my friend.

Of course, I will bitch about the crazy amount of traveling we have to do. Just look at the schedule...it's f***ing ludicrous. (I reserve the right to bitch about this. Take a look and tell me that it's not ridiculous.)

Look at all the years that you got to play terrible Met teams and we got to play the perennial division-winning Braves.

It's not a bold statement, it's a fan's statement. You, of all people, as Sox fans, should understand optimism in the face of inevitable demise. I think we're finished, but I hope we're not. Just like you guys after the 5 game massacre last year. You gotta keep hope alive.

If I didn't have this optimism, I wouldn't watch my team. I gotta hope and try to convince myself that we still have a chance. Suspension of disbelief. Rationally, we have no chance. Emotionally, we are still in the thick of things.

You do have a shitload of traveling to do. However, I would rather travel to play a bad team than stay in my state to play a really good one. I simply wish you guys play the Tigers every game for the next six weeks. That said, the schedule-maker hates the Red Sox. There can be no real rationale besides that.

Great post Gom. I HOPE you guys are done, but I know better than to think so.

maybe not. The schedule maker has given the red sox 19 games against the DRays after July. July is about the time they give up and go into the tank something awful. Didnt the Rays win something like 19 of their last 80 last yr?

I'll say this, and I don't believe it's blind optimism either. I think the Yankees beat the Sox IF, and a big IF, the Yankees make the playoffs. This year, we match up extremely well against the Sox. In fact, I think we are the only team that can derail the Sox. I think you guys know it as well. We are the biggest threat to you making the World Series. Well, maybe the A's too. They seem to have your number the last few years, if memory serves well.

Eh, memory tells me that no matter how well the A's do against the Sox in the regular season, it seems to be a near impossibility for them to beat the Sox in the post-season.

Right now, the Sox wouldn't be able to beat the Yankees in a 7-game series. I agree with you on that.

Before people jump on me...notice the two key words: right now.

Thinking about seeing the Yanks and the Sox in a postseason series this year scares me a bit, but also makes me HUGELY excited. The number 5's probably would be in the bullpen and it'd be our big 3 (mainly) against your big 3 (mainly), with hopefully everyone healthy.

The Yankees have played awful baseball so far this year. (Granted, it's improving now, but to this point...) But they're still a FANTASTIC baseball team. That playoff series, regardless of whether the Yankees convincingly make it in or just squeeze themselves in, would be a clash of the titans.

Well, we have a long road to climb to even get to that point. You guys have pretty much clinched a playoff spot.

What I am hoping for is to gain two games on the Tigers this weekend. I need my cross-town friends can help me out.

Beckett Schilling Matsuzaka vs Wang, Pettitte and Clemens.

Oh, that would be sweet. Tell you the truth, and we could debate this for months, but for this year, I like our three better. It is OH SO CLOSE though. I take our hitting over yours, and your pen over ours. There is really little doubt that this would go the full seven.

Even with the post-season performances of Beckett and Schilling against the post-season performances of Pettite and Clemens?

Beckett had one post-season. Schilling is a post-season monster. So the answer would be yes. I think being in the post-season will have no negative effect on any pitcher, even Dice-K who has been there. You won't see a melt-down from any of them. Even the other guys, Wake and Mussina have done a good job in the post-season at times.

Just imagine, Yanks/Sox 4-4, ninth inning in Fenway. Game 7. First and third, 1 out, Arod at the plate against Papelbon. Pedroia, Ortiz, Manny, Youk coming up for the Sox against Mo.

That...would....be....freakin' sweet.

You know, I will say this, the Aaron Boone game was great for us. As soon as he hit it, it was gone, and a great feeling. However, I can say this. Being at that game, the best moments were from right after Posada's bloop hit until the homerun. That tension, that nervousness, that gut-wrenching feeling. I sat next to a Sox fan for two innings [i was so nervous, I was moving around, switching seats trying to catch some magic]. Man, I will never forget him saying "In a way, I'm glad you tied the game. We wouldn't want to win any other way". I had a lot of respect for him, and all fans of RSN, after that. I remember Ortiz popping a ball a mile high against Mariano. I almost threw up. That's what I hope I can feel this post season, if my team makes it. Extra innings in a game 7. Can it get any better?

No, it can't :)

Just know that I've had that feeling of nausea probably 100x more than you though :D

Anyway, I'd take our rotation. Schilling is a post-season monster, as you said, and the way Beckett has been pitching...he's been so consistent that there's no suggesting that he's going to slow down. He has some post-season experience, and a ring, so I would feel confident with him out there. Hopefully by the post-season Matsuzaka will have figured himself out in this league and pitched a few more gems.

See, Clemens is a good pitcher and all, but I think he's the reason I'm taking our rotation. Against the Sox in the post-season he just hasn't been that effective. I mean, the last time I saw him against the Sox in 2003 he left the mound with a 4-run deficit (yeah, yeah, we all know how that turned out, ******* :D).

I actually wonder who felt more nervous, you or us. I can't believe any of you felt more tense then we were. You guys probably feel the same way. What a game that one was. Even though 2001 hurt 100x more than 2004, games 4,5, and 7 were unbelievable.

You know what's funny about 2003? I can't remember what happened the first 6 games.

I think you guys would probably have felt more nervous...the Sox didn't really have anything to lose. I mean, OBVIOUSLY we had things to lose, but we're the freaking Red Sox; everyone expects us to get to a certain point, then choke, the wallow in self-pity. We even expect it from ourselves at times. The Yanks are the Yanks, and anything short of 105 wins in the regular season and blowout playoff victories are a disappointment to some (allbeit a lot) of Yankee "fans". (That's not a dig at you or anyone else here...just a lot of your typical Yankee "fans" that don't know a baseball from a beachball and think the Yanks are supposed to win every single year)

he used to have range and he used to have very soft hands. He has neither now.

ZR and RF are stupid stats that have been discredited by anyone who has a brain. Jeter's range was good as a kid and his hands were solid up until this yr.
