This team will score its share of runs' date=' but it will slump because of the spotty production from the bottom half of the lineup. Add Helton to this lineup and it is a juggernaut. We need another big stick that will work the count and extend the lineup. It was a stupid move to pass on him. Please don't talk to me about the $ after everthying we spent this winter.[/quote']

I agree, but I think any deal that involves Lester or Buchholz would be a non-starter. Of course, I would trade a number of non-starters (hansen and Delcarmen, for instance) to get Helton. I liked how that deal sounded, especially if Lowell could move.

Ortiz flys ou tto RF' date=' 1 away[/quote']

Welcome the mann. Too bad you have to have THIS be the first game you join us for!

Manny has looked a little slow on the trigger so far this season. Of course, he's really smacked a few balls to so I guess I'm not concerned.

Let's hope Schll comes out heated tomorrow..

Why is Hinske hitting here? I mean' date=' he got a hit, but it still doesn't make sense to me... good history against him or what?[/quote']

Terry pulled Youkilis couple of innings ago and had Hinske come in as a defensive replacement... but yet Wily Mo is on the bench still

EDIT: Manny might need laser eye surgery, his bat is on his shoulders when fat pitches are placed in the middle of the zone

End of game, Schilling must help the Sox avoid the sweep

Wily Maze Hays with the catch in CF to finish the game. Slammin sammy happy with his juiced up performance, barely able to be contained in that MLB Authentic Jersey.

Wouldnt mind at all and hey theyd have the infield locked up for a good while. Lugo for 4 years, Youkilis who isnt arbitration eligible yet, Helton has 5 or 6 years left, and Pedroia of course is just in his rookie season

EDIT: this explains it

rotoworld

Kevin Youkilis left Saturday's game in the eighth inning with an apparent hamstring injury.

Eric Hinske replaced him at first base and would almost certainly start on Sunday if Youkilis can't go.

Look, I know weve gone over this subject, but I just kind of watch the comments fly. I hardly ever offer an opinion on the team beyond a single play or single game basis, so Im jumping out of my own line here.

I know it's only a few games into the season...but Im really worried about the other 157 games. This team just doesnt seem to be putting any heart into these games. 1 HR in five games? Winning two games against the Royals on a few singles and with one game's runs coming on an error and a misplayed ball? I know things should get better, but it just looks worse than it should right now. Im concerned.

im really concerned with this team to, cause they are not playing like they should be.

they just look dead out there like noone cares.

if it wasnt for the 2 great pitching performances from beckett and dice-k, this team could easily be winless right now

and i said it before the season started and ill say it again

coco crisp is not an MLB hitter anymore/right now. They need to find someone else, if its Ellsbury, Willy Mo or someone out of the organization. He cant hit for s***.

Varitek is another bat im worried about. I doubt he hits over .240 this year. We also dont have a 5th starter right now. And if Ortiz keeps struggling........

we might be in for a long season

So yeah..

BC loses tonight. f***.

The Red Sox lose tonight...f***.

I see the Goo Goo Dolls play 15 songs live at a birthday party as a complete surprise...awesome.

I'm kind of numb right now. The Goo Goo Dolls were awesome but BC and the Red Sox losing kind of killed part of my day. Wonderful.

So, in 3 sentences or less, would someone like to sum this game up for me? I didn't see it and I don't feel like going through 12 pages right now...

Julian Tavarez stumbled out of the gate lasting 4 innings, giving up 4 runs and walking 5 in the process. Drew misplayed a ball that gave Young a 2 run **inside the parker. Tito pulled another brain fart and left JC Romero in until he had given up his 5th straight hit with no outs recorded. Oh and the offense is still in sleep mode (Sorry 4 sentences)

Rooter mojo tomorrow for Curt to avoid the sweep?

What's too bad about it, he was enjoying every second of it.

If I see one more sentence about Ortiz struggling, I am gonna laugh at you. If all you are relying on is one player, then you will live or die by him. And when hgreat hitters fail 70% of the time, you dont need the math to see that this is a bad proposition. Ortiz and Manny will be fine. The distressing thing is, the rest of the team cannot pick them up. Lugo is back to being a slap hitter, something he started to improve on in TB (he drove the ball when he was going at his best). Drew is hitting well sans the power, he's like a powerless David Dellucci out there. Varitek had one hit last night, but his bat is about as slow as they come. Crisp looks awful at the plate. Youkilis is taking pitches and thus far has the sox only homer, which is amazingly poor. Lowell has looked like s*** too.

If the offense is gutting out wins without Papi and Manny, then it is encouraging considering that they will post .280-.310 35-50HR 110-140RBI each when 2007 ends. Right now, the supporting cast look like lepers.

As for the pitching, anyone with half a brain could see that Tavarez success last yr was an aberation due to his high WHIP. He proved it last night. You cannot allow a ton of baserunners and escape every time out. And with the way the sox offense has been, starting pitching is at a premium.

Also, Romero was lit up like a christmas tree last night. That pen is a coin flip and up to this point they have been good. But his outing essentially put the finishing touches on the loss.

Jack, you forgot to mention Drew is on a hot start to his Red Sox career. I believe 7 for 19 in his first 5 games. Have you seen all 5 games? He's hitten the ball deep several times, you make it warmer temperature and those are gone. The homeruns will come, its just unsettling that Youkilis has the only Sox bigfly in the 1st 5 games. Maybe they just need some good homefield advantage to kick start things. Hell cmon look at the guys Seattle is trotting out (Batista, Ramirez, Weaver)

And about Romero, Im sure even Torre wouldnt have allowed him to give up 5 straight hits. Let alone keep leaving him in against righties. His best use is a specialist but Tito I believe is making him one of his "favorites" to use a lot

I know this will sound odd coming from me. You will probably double-check to make sure that I am the poster, but I am not that pessimistic about the bottom third of our lineup. Crisp has been taking some good hacks the last few days. He clocked a shot to right that just died in the air in Texas. He also scorched one to SS where Michael Young made a sparkling play to rob him. His finger doesn't seem to be bothering him at all, and I expect that he will rip off some multiple hit games very soon, unless Tito pulls him for WMP. Also, the guy is as fast as hell. He had that base stolen by plenty on a hit and run. Tek has been making more consistent contact too. I expect that he will start hitting soon. He may not hit .280 or .290, but he'll be between .250 -.270. As for Pedroia, his swing looks more compact and he is more balanced at the plate than last year or in ST. I reallly think these bottom three are not that much worse than the Yankees: Posada, Minky, and Cano. Where the Yankees lineup is truly superior is with the table setter #1 and 2. Lugo and Youklis are not in the same class as Damon and Jeter. I still think Helto would make the Red Sox lineup the best in baseball, and the Rockies have this stud Baker sitting on the bench waitng for a spot to open. I don't know if he can play first, but they need to play him every day. Theo should make the call and ship MDC, Hansen, lowell and Tavarez ASAP.

Are you honestly worried about Ortiz? I mean come on, once the weather warms up a but the offense will be fine. Ortiz and Coco both hit balls last night that would have been gone during the summer. Varitek hit the ball well again last night. He only got 1 hit, but he was robbed on a nice play by Texeira.

This should have also been followed by a ....f***.

PS: I'm only moderately concerned about the short term performance of this team. They'll turn it around eventually. The question is if they'll collapse after the turnaround.

Posted

That's the concern, if they are down, which they are, and then have to battle to get back into it, by July they could be burnt out.

And don't worry about Papi, he'll be good. We HAVE to figure out the 5th starter situation. Trade, minors, something, anything!
