As much as I would welcome this, I mean seriously soxrules its been 4 years since Clemens was a Yankee, its not going to happen. Clemens just like last year is going to end up in Houston.

Why would he sign with the team that thought he was finished 10 years ago?

This can't be a serious question.

So, if your boss fires you, and on your way out the door tells everyone you are on the deline and are not worth the money you deserve. You would take him up on an offer while there are two other offers that can give you the ability of working closer to home, or for The Other Company just to stick it to Boston?

No, I wouldn't. However, think about your statement. I wouldn't go back to my old boss, but I'd have no qualms returning to that company if management changed and my old boss got the shitcan too. Think.

The problem is that the FO was WRONG when they "fired" him because they thought he was done. It would be like a boss wanting to hire the guy the fired when they realized he is still the top of his game 10 years later. (Maybe now not the top, but he would be a great #4 or #5 starter)

Ted, right or wrong isn't the issue. It was a different ownership group. It was a different general manager. Your analogy doesn't reflect that.

I don't think a Red Ass like Clemens will let it go because the mangement is different. This is the same guy that dotted his kid for taking him yard.

Brilliant analysis there. You base this opinion off what? Do you know the man? I have no problem thinking he'll be an adult in making his decision, and your ideas reveal that you clearly are not.

It's about the money and the situation. Clemens now has a spot on the team here if he wants it, same with the Yankees and Astros. It is not about feelings. If it was about feelings, Clemens would never consider coming back here. Now it comes down to who can pony up the most dough.

Clemens will follow two things :

MONEY

HIS EGO

Exhibit :

.... Went to Torronto to " Be closer to my family ", read the highest bidder.

.... Went to the Yanks, he forced a trade to get a WS ring. Ego.

.... Retired, tock the money, SUV, and applause. Oops, I'll play part-time, read money

.... I might retire again, make me the best offer ( money & terms ), read money & ego.

How is that not a clear idea? The fact that he dotted him kid tells me he is a Red Ass. If you think Clemens will make a decision without factoring in him getting canned, I have a bridge I would like to sell you.

Say he gets the same offer from NY and Boston?

If you think he can't see that the people responsible for his previous treatment are no longer part of the equation, then it's not surprising you own the bridge in the first place.

It depends on the future value of endorsements, etc. Meaning, I assume he'll go into the Hall of Fame, so it's a question of who's hat he wears. The Red Sox, where he spent most of his career, or the Yanks ( a brief stop and a WS ). I can pretty much guarentee it won't be Houston or Torronto. From a marketing perspection, where would he get the most bang for the buck and go out in style. The Sox with a really good pitching staff or the Yanks. He has a chance to amend his failings at Boston and go out as a winner. In NY he's just another hired gun.

in Boston, NY or Houston he is another hired gun. There is no way around it, this guy is a merc. He is going to sell his services to someone who

A. pays him tons of money

B. offers him a "savior" type role

C. offers him the best chance to win the WS

He will wait until the season starts to bear out.

both New York and Boston can offer him the same things now and will offer him the same things in June, it's the Pettitte factor that scares me

With the way Pussano and Igawa have thrown to this point and with the FO's intended purpose of having Hughes spend the majority of 2007 in the minors, I have an eery feeling that the yankees will get old man Clem.

Jackson, you clearly don't understand how big an icon he was to a couple of generations of Boston fans, and they are just itching to welcome him back. He never achieved the same status in NY with NY fans. You have to get this through your head.

Have you ever met the man? Do you know him? I have/do. He happens to be a family friend of a family friend of mine. He's one of the nicest people I've ever met.

The guy leaves Boston to go to Toronto after being told he was in the twilight of his career. He says he wants to win, so he goes to Toronto for 750K a yr more than what the yankees offered. Then he bitches and moans his way into a yankee uniform then "retires" from the yankees. Unretires, goes to Houston where he has the sweetest arrangement ever and then asks for a record amount for a pitcher. He holds them hostage last yr, now has the balls to keep 3 teams waiting till half way through the yr. Sorry dude, your buddy of a buddy may think the guy is a nice guy, but his actions speak loudly. The dude is a merc, has always been and always will be. He may be nice to the people he knows, but he is a stone cold businessman and his decision will be made regardless of whether the fans will build a shrine for him in Boston.

And do you think Pacman Jones is a bad guy based off of what you hear or see about him? Different situation, I know, but same idea. You have to know him.

Most people in this life go for the most money they can get. He's not doing anything that 99% of the world's population wouldn't do. He knows how to get money, and he's smart in doing so. He asks for the money because he knows he can get it. And for the record, he threw at his son because he was playing grab ass, not because he was legitimately pissed off (I don't know who brought that up, but it was stupid to think that he threw at his son out of anger). And what's wrong with being a stonecold businessman? A lot of people are. Those happen to be the most successful people. He's a great father, a great husband, and a great guy to socialize with. He doesn't keep all of his money for himself, either. He does some great things with it. But most of you are so blinded by your distaste and public perception of him, that you would never EVER think that it's possible for him to be a generally nice guy. Well, he is.

Also, I don't expect to win this debate, so let's not drag it out. I've met the guy, spent time with him, you haven't, and because of it we're not going to agree on anything. Let's just agree to disagree. I just ask that before you solidify your perception of him, think of what he could be off-camera.

fans + adoration + sentimentality= $

Clemens is a mercenary without a sentimental bone in his body, but as the consummate mercenary he will look to fleece the biggest suckers. He's like a stripper working the crowd. He has a talent for finding the easiest mark. That my friend are Red Sox fans. Let's face it. Yankee fans never really liked him that much. I suppose we will have to go through this back and forth a month from now when Clemens starts hinting about playing.

I am not saying that he is a horrible person and that I would do any differently. But anyone who thinks Clemens will put the hearts and minds of the red sox fans into his decision, you are smoking something.

And yes, btw, you get arrested 10+ times, you are automatically and *******.

he doesnt need to fleece the fans. He needs to fleece the FO. And trust me on this one, a phone call by the Hendricks to Steinny saying the sox are the highest bidder will fix that. If you honestly think George will be outbid for Clemens when the sox are the other bidder is naive to say the least. The only bidding the sox win over the yankees are bids the yankees dont intend to win (Manny, they wanted Moose) or those that are silent (Matsuzaka).
