Stop treating the board like a chat room, and you'll get there. The only place that should resemble a chat room is the game threads.

This is not a matter of good pitchers working out the kinks in ST. There is a lack of talent in that bullpen. Theo needs to get Hansen back on the field and performing well and then package him to the Nats for Cordero.

700, if Hansen pitches like he did today the next time he goes out on the mound, we could package him, Delcarmen, and Piniero and be lucky to get a box of cracker jacks in exchange. Hansen was simply disgusting today, and Delcarmen was equally disgusting again. It's getting to be a habit with that guy.

Of course, if it is any consolation to any of you, I was listening to the Angels-Giants game on the way home from the golf course (shot a 44, thank you), and Phil Siebel, the guy we traded for Donnelly was getting lit up like a Christmas tree. Six hits and five runs in one inning of pitching. We still could have that guy around.

i have a feeling that this year, we'll have 3-5 different closers

once one guy blows a save, the next guy will have a chance until he blows one, then the next guy.

I can already see the media blowing the closer role way out of proportion form day 1, once one guy blows a save, they will be all over him. Same will happen after another guy blows a save.

my guess is that by August we will see paps in the 9th

Animal, if Papelbon is put in the closer's role in August this season is shot to hell. It may be early (ok Kilo? It is early!), but nothing I've seen so far make me confident that we have a closer in our ranks that can go in there and save a game. Hansen was absolutely brutal today, and Delcarmen was brutal once again. Maybe I ought to take some consolation that Pinhead Piniero pitched one scoreless inning and didn't get his tits lit again.

Joel Piniero's problem is that he needs to change his arm slot to be able to throw hard enough to be a good closer. Throwing with a new arm slot when you've been throwing a different way your entire life isn't easy but it can be done. It was done with Bryce Cox and changed him from an extra guy to the belle of the CWS.

He may become comfortable with his new arm slot by the end of spring training, but he does have three more weeks.

Delcarmen and Hansen have upside both being in their 20's. Hansen in his early twenties. These guys have a lot of potential. Prospects don't instantly become great major leaguers, sorry Fred, it doesn't work out that way.

Maybe the best pitching prospect in the country, Homer Bailey, went out the other day and got tagged for like 5 runs in 2/3 of an inning. You think the Reds are going to deal him off for nothing because he fell on his face once? No. You think if he gets called up and doesn't get it done right away, they'll deal him? No. He still has a power arm and upside. Hansen, especially, has upside. He is going to be able to be at least a decent reliever if not a closer type when his time comes. Patience.

Pinerio Prediction:

3.23 ERA 30-39 saves, 55 K's in 70 innings 235. Ba against. about 100 heart attacks for sox fans, but in the end does a very solid job for us this year.

MANNYHOF, the drinks are on me if your turn out to be right on the guy. I think most of the guys here will keep you drunk the whole next off season. If he does that we get in the World Series.

ksushi, I'll give you this. You're one helluva upbeat guy. Well, our relief pitching has gotten a lot better the past few games. Hell, it is our hitting that is a little off right now. In my opinion, though, if we can get our bullpen straightened out we have as good a chance as anyone in our league of getting to the WS. The problem? We have aboutfive or six teams in our league who could win as many as 90 games and like you I don't want to be washed out of the Playoffs this year. I'm optimistic our hitting and starting pitching will pave the way if only our bullpen will come through. Isn't that how you see it?

my bone of contention is we may sacrifice 8-10 games before anyone earns a defined role in the bullpen

this competetive american league will not afford us said luxury

someone drank the punch today, lol.

The point is, if Pineiro hasnt regained his high 90s heat, then he wont be that effective. If he has regained his high 90s heat, then he needs to regain that bite on what was one of the dirtiest curves in the game. If he can regain his two plus plus pitches, then he will be fine. But to this point, I have heard he is sitting in the low 90s (90-91) and I havent heard anything about his curve. You guys would have said something about it if it was back to vintage. Cause back in the day, it was dynamite.

i thought you would avoid making predictions after you penciled randy johnson in for 27,carl pavano for 24 and jarrett wright for 18wins a couple years ago...

anyways

i dont like uncertainty with the pitching staff, especially the closers position

the sox will need quality starts from everyone early on to take the pressure off whoever winds up with this gig...

2 weeks to get their collective s*** together

My Pineiro Prediction:

1.00 ERA 50/50 on saves, and then Aliens invade the earth and obduct him during the world series and cost the Red Sox a Championship to the Pittsburg Pirates

I'm hoping they bring back Bob Stanley and Calvin Shiraldi to share the closer's role.

isnt rod beck available?

him and butch huskey were intricate parts of the 99 team

Too soon man. Too soon.

As a matter of fact I remember a particular game Against Seattle in 1999 when me and three buddies headed up to Fenway to see Petey pitch.

We get there and after getting semi-loaded head into the stadium...its maybe 45 minutes before game time. We see some guy with number 39 long-tossing in RF, in front of the Sox pen, with the Sox catcher.

I said "Something's wrong guys, who's this fkn stiff long-tossing...I think that's our pitcher today."

Nahh, they keep telling me for the next 20 minutes or so. A little before game time we see Petey stroll through the bullpen, come out on the field, shaking hand with the opposing players, goofing around, etc. and now we know he ain't pitching. Turns out this was the game where he showed up 30 minutes prior to game time so Jimy Williams wouldn't let him start. He did come in in the fifth or 6th and pitched well though.

Who knew that in 2000 Florie would nearly be decapitated by a line drive...that was friggin gruesome, blood coming out his nose, his mouth, some say his ear too.

Pineiro is Theo's choice for closer so it might be good to keep hoping that he keeps doing his job the next two weeks. After a shaky start he seems to have gotten a little more heat on his fastball and is retiring batters. I'm now convinced that Epstein is going into the season with what we have in our bullpen, perhaps buoyed by the fact that they have performed well the last couple of weeks. Keep those fingers crossed.

Before my Red Sox time Crunch, and thank God for that. I saw Veras on TV and he looked worse that WMP does on the breaking pitch. Sadler was a helluva good fielder, somewhat akin to our Pokey a few years ago but he couldn't hit much either. Vaughn ate himself out of baseball but he was a force for a number of years. Nomar destroyed himself with his shitpile attitude in 2004 but seems to have revived himself with the Dodgers. Hopefully, we will never have to go through that with our infield again.
