Not a bad deal. I have always liked Donnelly as he was a former scab who found a niche. The Yankees have had their way with him in years past to the tune of a 5+ ERA over the last 3 yr and a 9+ last yr in 4 games.

But he is a guy who you can essentially pencil in for 60 innings, he'll likely have an era in the 4 range in fenway and would likely be pretty reliable. Him and Timlin should be able to share the setup duties and put up average performance there. Like I said, I like Donnelly, think he will be competent in the pen and would do them well. His only question is his age, as he will be turning 36 in the middle of the yr. They still need a closer though, but this is a good first step IMO.

Donnelly? Meh. I don't like the trends in his K/9, BB/9, and H/9, but I'm not crying over moving Seibel for him. Hopefully he doesn't continue his current slide.

great move

hes not a savior as much as a cog in the engine

now

to find a closer who throws 98,eats nails,,hates puppies and rain drops on roses

anyone else ready for the weekend here??

this has got to be the longest week ever

jackson

as an astute man as yourself knows

we had calvin schiraldi close for us 1 summer and we ended up with a 2 run lead with 2 out 2 strikes and nobody on base in the 10th inning up 3-2 in game 6.

well mr crespo

the last images i have of game 6 were the pictures that NBC showed of schiraldis wife and the woman?? who i can only describe as a bastard offspring of the fabulous sports babe and marty feldmans daughter who sat behind homeplate and was rolling her arms real fast

i havent s*** solid since nor has my ex

who i hung out a 4story window by her ankles as she laffed in my face when buckner blew the play at 1st....i think my father was disappointed i didnt drop her

there isnt a judge or jury between stamford ct and ft kent maine that wouldve convicted me

Donnelly will be a great improvement to the bullpen but he ain't no closer, that's for sure...

if he is going to be the closer then we should just have Timlin close for us...

Posted

It's a good aquistion, but as many have said, not if he's the closer.

The bullpen is now:

Closer

Timlin

Delcarmen

Donnelly

Okajima

Tavarez

Possibly Hansen, depends on how we construct our bench.

Posted
IMO Id say it would be best for Hansen to be in Triple A for the start of the season. He needs some reconstruction with his mentality

agreed

and heres another example of why you cant rush these guys along

sure

he throws 100

but he needs to develop some off speed stuff, learn to pitch inside and maybe shave a couple times before he comes back up to the show

Red Sox acquired RHP Brendan Donnelly from the Angels for LHP Phil Seibel.

Donnelly isn't the answer in the closer's role for the Red Sox, but at this price, it's a pretty good pickup. The 35-year-old Donnelly's ERA has gone up each of the last three years, reaching 3.94 last season. Still, the league still batted just .240 against him and he struck out 53 in 64 innings, suggesting that he's likely to remain a decent sixth- or seventh-inning guy for another year or two. Also, he's due to make only about $2 million in arbitration.

i think its a good deal for both teams

we have no room for Seibel, but he could be a decent bullpen option down the road for Anaheim

I don't think anyone should be all that excited about this particular move but it doesn't exactly kill the Red Sox. Seibel was a 27 year old who barely cracked AAA last year so he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who's going to dominate down the road. On the other hand, Donnelly's trending in the wrong direction and while he should eat innings and be better than Seanez, there's no way he's the relief ace (if the Sox expect to make the playoffs next year).

Seibel is a strange cat. Languishes in the minors, then last yr turns it on to an unprecedented level. Then he comes up to the bigs and walks 5 in 2 innings. He could either become a dominating lefty specialist or a AAAA player who never sees the light of day. Either way, I'd do the deal 10 times out of 10.

Good move. Trading for someone like Donnelly (while he's not as good as he used to be) is a move the Sox had to make...and if it's for a guy like Seibel I dunno how anyone can be beat up over it.

Could it be Drew??

Nope. I think it's in the bullpen.

if you go out to weei.com/audio vault/ Dale and holley/ theo interview and slide to the 15:00 minute mark in the audio file, you'll hear him say "we're gonna have 2 acquisitions in the bullpen fairly shortly - possibly as soon as today......"

That was right before the Donnelly announcement. So who knows? :dunno:
