Bitter much. Absolutely' date=' I admit it. I went to bed last night feeling all warm and fuzzy that Matsu was going back to Japan. Today I get smacked back to reality. Score one for the sox, AND the rivalry. This is gonna be one hell of a yr.[/quote']You mean that you believed all that crap you were spewing about Boras having all the leverage and the crap about him challenging the posting process in the courts, and about Boras buying Matsuzaka's contract from Seibu, etc. etc.   I though you were just trying to work up my brethren Red Sox fans by playing to our paranoia. You ended up convincing yourself? If you had listened to me, you would not be disappointed today, because you would have expected this. I explained why every one of your scenarios were absolutely preposterous and that Boras had no leverage. His attempts at the end to drag in the Seibu Lions as a third party to the negotiations by calling them selfish was a sign of desperation. In the end, he had no leverage at all, and as I told you whores don't walk away from money. He was not happy with the payday, but he was not going to leave the money on the table to crusade against the unfairness of the posting process. The Red Sox FO held their ground and didn't blink. So much for the legend of Boras, super agent.

I know. What I am saying is that the red sox may have been looking for something similar to what the yankees got. Hence' date=' once they saw what the Tigers gave up for a guy who is not nearly worth as much as Manny, the price escalated. If you told the red sox 3 months ago that Manny could be dealt for a top pitching prospect and a top closer prospect, he'd probably have said, one more prospect and where do I sign. Once the yankee deal went down, he was talking about MLB ready talent only.[/quote']

I think the needs of this team are MLB ready talent only at this point. They have had two great drafts and have lots of good players in the too-soon-to-tell stage. What they need are guys who can contribute now. Say, a closer. Solid BP arms. I remember hearing deals that had names like "Peavy" and "Andruw Jones". I personally think that's a little higher than Humberto Sanchez and two other guys.

According to the Herald there were reports that Seibu had threatened to send Matsuzaka back to the minors if he came back, thus kicking in a clause that allows them to control him for an extra year before FA. It appears Seibu found a way to have some leverage, but its hard to know if it was necessary or not.

Very nice, he's owed just $6 million this season. That puts the updated payroll to $136 million. The cap I believe is $145 or 148 million

The cap number is the AAV, so in terms of the LT threshold Matsuzaka's impact will be $8.5M annually ($10M if he hits his incentives - which we all want him to do).

that would have been the breaking point I think.

this is where I disagree with you. Yes, they had two great drafts according to BA. But none of those guys have crossed the proving grounds, so right now they are big ???'s. Once you cross AA, your chances of going to the majors improve significantly. As for right now, the only real MLB prospect who didnt hit the bigs last yr is Ellsbury. Everyone else will not have even seen AA, while this kid thrived at that level. If dealing Manny early on was a way to restock the upper level of the farm, I think they do that deal. Now, no way. MLB ready talent or bust for Manuel Aristides.

he officially signs the deal if he passes the physical, results come out today

after that, its the 5pm press conference at Fenway and then I guess he'll meet his teammates, get accustomed to the city, etc.

Alrighty the top story on ESPN's Cold Pizza is the Terrell Owens saga which is nothing new at all

I'm with you on this Riverside. We can barfcan the whys and wherefores on the Matsuzaka caper. It is over, we got him, Red Sox Nation is happy, talksox is happy, dirt dogs is happy, Boras is happy, Dice-K is happy, the Lions are happy, and the only unhappy people I know of reside in the Bronx. I'm all for moving on with this story. He is ours, and, yes, I'm happy too.

You do have to give the Sox FO some credit here. Boras wanted 'over 100 million' in salary for the guy and the Sox got him for 52 million. The posting fee? It's as simple as this. They posted 51 milliion so that they were the only team negotiating for him. They basically posted that money so that the other 29 teams couldn't bid against them for his services. If it was a bidding war with another team - any other team - the signing price would be much more than 52 million especially in todays market. Waaaaaay more.

I absolutely agree that the FO deserves some credit, and I gave them that credit for not blinking when Boras attempted to use the media to peddle the idea that this kid was due $15m per year despite the fact that the posting system took away his leverage.

My comments were in response to those who called this a steal...a steal implies that they got him for less than he could have gotten elsewhere, which is not the case...the player and his agent had very little leverage, the Sox FO realized this and they came to terms.

Very nice job by the FO all around...just not a steal and Boras wasn't beaten.

all reports from ESPN, the Globe, Herald, local Boston news broadcasts, etc... is that Matsuzaka passed the physicals very cleanly and signed the contract actually at Mass General Hospital

Im setting my Tivo to record the press conference as 5:00 is my start time at work :thumbdown

Keep me informed Riverside. I'm out here in So. California where the media thinks everyone is either an Angels or Dodgers fan. I hope all this is settled and the Drew thing get adjuticated quickly. Have you or anyone else heard what's up there? I heard he went back home yesterday and that sounds ominous to me.

I think, if nothing else, Dice-K will bring the respectful, hard working approach to the game, bust his butt for the fans, just like Hideki Matsui and Ichiro, whom I know we all respect. He is going to where number 18. Let's hope he is the greatest 18 ever.

OK so two days ago this deal wasn't going to happen so I put it out of my brain to study 24/7 for finals. Today I find myself walking to Shaws wondering what the hell all of those people were doing outside Fenway, and sure enough, Dice-K was signed. I am really indifferent to this. If he's great, that's great, if he's not, oh well. I watched some of the news conference and he looks like a respectable player that I will definitely not boo. I just hope that the tickets I get for next season are for games that he is pitching. Oh and giving him the number 18? Is it just me or is that a slap in Johnny's face that is so not deserved?

Like Brent said, it's the number that he's worn in Japan, and the number that he's worn basically all his life. He was hoping it was available when he signed.

Whoa, I just responded to you... you didn't fall off of the earth!

if Turnbow is your closer' date=' then 2007 is caput for the sox.[/quote']More prayers. Maybe you convince yourself of this like you did with your delusions about Dice-K going back to Japan.
