we should just sighn loretta hes not getting any offers just keep him around just incase pedoria wilts

And use up even more cap space that can be better used on our greatest weakness, the bullpen? Why are people so quick to write Pedroia off?

There's probably a reason he's not getting any offers...

That was 2 seasons ago. 2 seasons matters at his age. I have bad memories of Loretta... his range sucked. His defense was good for what his range allowed, but he couldn't get to groundballs that Pedroia will be able too. Pedroia's quicker.

people are quick to write him off because he didn't look particulalry good in the limited opportunity he had last year.

Personally? I'll hold off on judgement. I'd like to see what this kid can do.

But I can't really complain if some Sox fans are not excited by the prospect of him starting the season at 2B because hasn't shown much thus far.

I understand, but it's almost ridiculous. They won't even give him a chance. I personally will hold off judgment as well, but at least be open to the fact that we're going to be seeing what he can do.

There are a few things we should all remember about Dustin Pedroia. One, he has hit well in every place he has played---college, A, AA, and AAA. Secondly, he hit in some bad luck last summer. I know of at least six balls he hit onthe nose that were right at someone. Thirdly, he yanked in and out of the lineup by FrancoMa, hardly a way to instill confidence in a new player. Fourth, he did some good hitting against the Yankees, took Randy high off the wall in left, and the next day got the tie breaking and winning hit against the Yankees. Leave this guy alone. He is going to be a solid player for us. Let us instead now on doing the finishing work on our pitching staff, a closer and another pitcher who can set up when we need it.

I love Pedroia and I think he will be great but the only thing that leaves me uneasy is that they're relying on a rookie to be an everyday player for them in a year where it really seems like they're going for it all

I agree, I'm not even expecting too much from him this season. If anything I look for a .280, a few bombs, and a decent amount of RBIs. What i do expect out of him is to play smart and play good scrappy d. He should be playing with all he's got, as if he doens't he'll be looking at Cora in his rearview mirrow.

Then we better hope that Pedroia is as good as we hope he will be. Cora in any rear view mirror is a sign of trouble since the guy cannot play more than three or four days in a row before he starts to slump and wear down. We need him as a utility player and nothing more. I think Dustin will hold up just fine.:D :D :D

Question for the Sox fans. Why don't you guys go after Giles?

.262 BA

.341 OBP

.387 SLG

90 OPS+

I think Pedroia can exceed these numbers. Why spend $$ on an older version of Pedroia?

Some of us Sox fans better becareful, your starting to sound like NYY fan. And worry when there isn't an All-Star, or a household name at every position. Yes there going for it this year but there has to be a couple positions that help save the team some money. And this year it looks to be 2B and 1B, which is fine by me. To me a team has a better shot of winning with a combo of vets and youngsters. Our lineup with Papi,Manny, and Drew with Lugo at the top is go enough to have a unexperienced guy in the 9 hole. Hid D will be just as good or better then Lorettas, so I say throw him in and tell him not to worry and to learn as he goes. The best thing the Sox can do is tell this kid this job is his, so that he doesn't get all worried he will lose it.

HAHAHA glad to see your catching on Jackson:D

BoNat, why all this fear that Pedroia is going to fall on his face. Anyone who can perform as he did against the Yankees last September, and who has been successful everywhere he's played and has so much spirit and vinegar that his college coach wears a hat with his last name written on it, is a player I want on my team. Forget Giles. Pedroia is going to be our second baseman for a long long time unless someone in the FO has another brain cramp and screws around with this kid. He's our second baseman for the next 12 year. End of story.

From today's Boston Globe:

One major league source said the Sox were a leading contender for second baseman Marcus Giles, who was not tendered a contract by the Braves by Wednesday's midnight deadline and became a free agent. But indications from the Sox yesterday were that while they may make an inquiry, they expect the Padres or Mets to be willing to ante up more money for Giles, who would bump Dustin Pedroia out of a job if he came to Boston.
The Sox are looking for a safety net in case the kid flops.

Giles is a VERY interesting possibility. What player is he, the one from 03 or the bum from last yr. One thing to consider is how he and his brothers power seemed to dip around the same time, right after steroid testing began. Maybe they were juicing together to keep it in the fam?

What is the word on Loretta? Does he have an offers on the table? If his price is low enough' date=' they should re-sign him.[/quote']

I had heard SF, then they resigned Durham, so that looks out. Then it was Cincy, but they rescinded their 2yr 6mil offer. Then it was SD, but now they seem to be going for Giles. Right now, I think he is awaiting an offer that he likes. I think he wants 2 yrs, and most teams are only offering 1.
