whoever was wondering about the Yankees direction, I think it is fairly obvious. The Yankees want Andy Pettitte and from published reports, it looks like the Astros may be moving on without the lefty. The Woody Williams signing was likely an indicator of the stros disinterest in a rocket redux and now the stros are making a pitch to Schmidt, Lilly and Meche. The Yankees obviously want to add stability and Pettitte would certainly offer that. He surpassed 200IP each of his last 2 seasons and 2005 was a career yr for him. Last season, he struggled out the gate after offseason surgery but finished strong as the stros tried to make their annual playoff push. Not only would Pettitte offer the yankees another left handed starter (something that would be even more intriguing should the sox sign Drew and move Manny) but they would be adding a pitcher with extreme yankee ties while still being close to prime. At 34, with Clemens work ethic (and exercise program), and with a huge frame he will likely last a bit longer than a guy like Lilly or other smaller pitchers. Overall, I never endorsed signings of Meche or Lilly or any of the like as I think they would be Pavano all over again. But signing Pettitte would add a top of the rotation arm with Yankee experience and I think that is something that cannot be quantified.

Another thing that would make sense about this move is that any Pettitte signing would not involve the movement of any of their young AAA pitchers. It would also keep them in AAA for the whole season for seasoning as they get stronger.

and it looks like he will be asking for a 1 yr deal with a player option. What luck, the yankees have 3 AAA prospects who will likely be ready in 1 to 2 yrs and they will have 3 rotation spots opening over the next 2 yrs.

I think he has a lot left. Clemens workouts and work ethic, plus big body equals less chance of breakdown. And with the sox on the verge of ridding themselves of their only right handed power threat, the lefty seems poised to have success against the sox.

Wasn't one of the reasons Andy left NY to be closer to home? More specifically, didn't Andy have a habit of straying from the marital bed? I'm sure the wife will love this idea.

I never heard the rumors of him being unfaithful... I thought he was just a good down home baptist kid..

Safe to say if thats the offer on the table that Pettitte is a Yankee once more.

Zitos gonna get a lot. 17+.

The beauty of any Pettitte deal is the length. The guy was fighting over retiring, so it isnt like he is going to hold out for a 4 yr deal. He is 34, which for a large framed pitcher should still be prime, and he is a 10 yr veteran of the yankees. The guy is a perfect fit right now. The yankees need a short term plug until Hughes, Sanchez, and Clippard are ready. They are trying to get a former yankee top of the rotation left handed pitcher while he is still in his prime when he only wants 1 or 2 yrs. Perfect. This fell right into their laps.

true, but the fact that it is coming closer to occuring is something that has to make Cashman cream his undies. This is the piece he was waiting for and it looks like he'll be playing which is the first hurdle.

Can O'Neil' date=' Brosius, and Cone be far behind.[/quote']

Posted a 2.80 ERA after the All Star Break, wasn't offered arbitration (no draft picks lost), and is only looking for a short term deal. And he has thrived under the pressure in NY.

This isn't signing Tino for the sake of doing it, this will help the team.

Maybe his elbow will finally go like the Yankee doctors said it would.

I guess we get an excuse to start Phil Hughes at midseason then, don't we?

200 innings 2 yrs in a row is enough for me. Then consider the NY experience, the big frame, being lefty, and wanting a short term deal, how can anyone consider this a problem. Plus, unlike JD Drew, this guy has proven to be healthy most years, while Drew takes half a season off every other.

I've seen lots of rumors about Andy being a skirt chaser.

What do you do, hang out outside their windows to peek at their lives? I live in NY, never heard the rumor, lol. ORS, you really need to get out more. Seriously. I'm starting to worry about you.

Pettite coming to the Yankees will backfire on the Yankees. Screw him. I'd rather have Clemens back.
