Do you really think the difference between Ortiz and Youk at 1B is significant enough to outweigh the difference between Bonds and Youk at the plate? I'll bet the offensive difference is something like 10 times greater than the defensive one.

the Boston Herald reports that Alex Gonzalez wants a 3-4 year deal. Are you guys still on board. I was thinking 1-2 with options, but as long as the money is reasonable I would not be opposed to giving him 3

If the team is going to go that long on a SS, I'd rather it be Lugo. He's a more dynamic player who can do a lot with his bat and on the basepaths.

Imagine the slow-footed Bonds playing in the vast Fenway RF or Papi playing 1B then. The only way Bonds can come is if he suddenly percieves Boston as a non-racist town (whether it is or not doesn't matter' date=' just his perception) and if Manny is no longer the Sox LF. Also the Sox will need to pay like 15m for his services (and 1m for his drugs). No thanks.[/quote']

Bonds would be playing DH, not RF. He also wouldn't cost $15 million, more like $10-$12.

The offense would be greatly boosted by his bat in the lineup. No one can doubt that.

He didn't play for the Dodgers yesterday. Was he injured? or was he just benched? I'd give Gonzo a 3 year contract. I've said it dozens of times before on these boards. Just because you sign a guy doesn't mean that you have to keep him for the duration of the contract. Nothing would keep us from trading him if at some point they want to go in another direction.

How true, like for example... A shortstop who will be available after the 07 season is Mr. Michael Young

I like Gonzo, but let's face it, his value is all in his glove. As he gets older, his range decreases and his value wanes. Lugo's value is at the plate, and that is less likely to go away with age. They are the same age, so for the next 3-4 years, I like Lugo better. A shorter timeframe and I can see the argument for Gonzo.

My rationale was that if he worked out we'd have him for the second year and if he didn't work out, he was cheap enough where we could trade him. I feel the same way now. Even after having the good year, he will not command a hiuge contract because his bat is nothing special. I'd sign him for 3 years and trade him at the first sign of slipping or when someone like Michael Young becomes available. I don't think Lugo is an impact offensive player and just not worht the downgrade in defense.

Has there been any speculation or talk from the media about the Sox possibly going after Bonds or is it just random chatter on the internet?

There's no question about his ability but his age worries me. He would be a liability in the field and fans would have their fingers crossed everyday that he stayed healthy. Also the whole steroids scandal isn't something that I think our FO would want to get caught up in. He has also talked about his dislike for the city and I doubt he would even want to play for us.

I haven't seen this rumor coming from any reputable media outlet.

Mark my words right now...Bonds numbers next year will not be worthy of $8 million, let alone the $10-15 million he's going to command. The man is old, broken down, a locker room cancer, and atrocious to the fans. He's destined to miss at least 40-50 games with various knee ailments and rest days. I want no part of him in Boston, and I don't even think Theo will give bringing him here a second thought. Theo's never been one to throw enormous money at huge names...he's more about putting together role players to bring about a winning team. Bringing Bonds into the Boston clubs house spells trouble trouble trouble.

yeah stay away from bonds, go after Soriano and put him in right and move Pena to left. Then some how acquire A. Ram from the cubs

Youk 1b

Soriano

Ortiz

Manny

A. Ram

Pena

Tek

Pedroia

Gonzo

That would be a sick lineup, and it could happen if A. Ram is avaviable this offseason.
