I doubt we're going to get anything in return ... which is why I don't understand trading him.

Hanging on to him guarantees nothing in return when he retires. It's worth a shot.

We're selling what, 8 starts left in the season (for the Sox) to the highest bidder. This is how we got Tek and Lowe - not that something like that will happen again, but it's worth the shot.

If he is traded we will get a low to mid level guy with some upside and a playoff contender gets a guy who can pitch in big games.

I'd just like to see him retire here rather than trade him for a couple A ballers who will never go anywhere.

I'm wrong though ... we should move him for whatever we can get.

You never know. The Pads and Dodgers may fight for him. It will be interesting to see if Theo can screw them out of something good.

Exactly, same situation as when we traded Freddy Sanchez for Jeff Suppan a few years back. I hope we can get a decent prospect for Wells...or any prospect for that matter.

I think you may be undervaluing him. NESN is reporting that 7 teams have interest in him. He's a lefty that is pitching very well right now. His arm is fresh because he has not pitched most of the year and he has always been a money big game pitcher. He could make the difference for some team in the post-season. Each of the teams headed for the playoffs has some starting pitching deficiencies, except maybe for the White Sox. It is a sellers market for this commodity.

I think he took the view that the Pirates screwed us out of Freddy Sanchez.

If that is was the case then it's about damn time. The Pirates have been getting screwed out of players(mostly by themselves) for a decade +

I wonder if the Mets are one of those 7 teams.

Nevermind. Just read the ESPN article claiming that they are in fact interested.

The Mets, Cards and Dodgers are probably knocking our door down. I can't see them passing on a proven veteran arm especially one that can hack it in the AL coming over to the NL.

Red Sox entertain offers on Wells

The Padres and Dodgers are showing the most interest in trading for Red Sox left-hander David Wells, a source with knowledge of the Sox's discussions told FOXSports.com on Tuesday.

The Cardinals, the source said, also could be in the mix for Wells, who has cleared waivers. The Reds are actively looking for another starting pitcher, and the Mets and Twins also figure to inquire about Wells. It is unlikely that an interested club would part with anything more than a mid-level prospect for Wells, who is expected to retire at the end of the season.

The Red Sox, trailing the Yankees by seven games in the A.L. East and the Twins by six games for the wild card, appeared to have little interest in moving Wells as recently as Monday. However, the uncertain physical conditions of designated hitter David Ortiz and outfielders Manny Ramirez and Wily Mo Pena apparently have persuaded club officials that a post-season berth is now out of reach.

Ortiz is set to undergo more tests for heart palpitations. Ramirez, bothered by a sore right knee, and Pena, slowed by a sore left wrist, are returning to Boston from the west coast to meet with doctors on Wednesday. Wells, 43, is 2-2 with a 2.65 ERA in August, and his vast post-season experience surely appeals to contenders: Wells is 10-4 with a 3.15 ERA in 26 career post-season appearances, 16 starts.

The Padres, though, would consider acquiring Wells even after the Aug. 31 deadline for setting post-season rosters, a move that only would enable them to use Wells for the rest of the regular season, a second source said.

FWIW from his WEEI interview today, Tito was adamant that Wells won’t be traded and is still scheduled to make his next start tomorrow. He called the rumors “fictitious”.

I wouldn't put too much stock into his interview. I think there is a pretty good chance Wells is gone come Thursday.

I don't know about that. normaly tito is vague in his interviews regarding this stuff. He would say something like "i haven't heard anything about that", but he was very forceful in saying that nothing is happening. We'll see i guess

According to the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo, the Red Sox are talking to the Padres, Dodgers and Cardinals about David Wells.

Wells indicated that he'd prefer to pitch on the West Coast, but is OK with being dealt if it is to a contending team. Non-roster Padres prospects the Red Sox would likely be interested in include 3B Chase Headley, C Nick Hundley and RHP Leo Rosales. The Dodgers have 3B Blake DeWitt, SS Chin-Lung Hu or one of their interesting young pitchers to offer

Espn radio said Boston rejected the Cardinals trade proposal for one or 2 low level minor league prospects. Boston wants one of either Wainwright, Rasmus or another prospect.
