They have 9 days to dump players if this doesn't turn around on the west coast. Face it, its time to pretty much throw in the towel and trade guys like Wells and Loretta out of here.
I agree. They should back up the truck and load on the garbage, but the FO is gutless and will not hold a fire sale because they are too image conscious. This downward spiral into the toilet has been coming since before the All Star Break.

Did jsinger and 700 just agree on something? Holy s***!

But, like normal, I agree with 700. The FO is way too concerned with how the moves, that would actually benefit the team at this point, would look. I guess I would be too if I had a 120 million dollar payroll that didn't make the playoffs. How embarrassing would it be to throw in the towel with a team that expensive...

(Notice how I didn't say win the world series with a 120 million dollar payroll. I said make the playoffs.)

A fire sale in August would be an enormous embarrassment.

It would but its better than getting absolutely nothing for free agents they are not signing. This team has shown no signs of life. They are dead tired. The bullpen is dead. Most of the starting rotation is dead. The DL list is filling up with players. If they have to throw in the towel then so be it. They are not a better team than NY, Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota and maybe even Anaheim. Injuries, age and declining performances are catching up to this team.

Is Lowell also someone who would be placed on waivers ? isnt he owed a hefty amount of money ?

Anyone can be placed on waivers but no team would be foolish enough to pick up Lowell's money unless the Red Sox ate a bunch of it.

I agree with you, but I don't see the FO as having the courage to do it.

I think they will do it. They are just waiting maybe 3-5 days to see if their is any life left in this team. Theo will do it. Lucky probably doesn't. In the end Theo will likely trade off players if things don't turn around in the next week.

the bullpen's crap, I agree but theyve been taxed as hell lately too. But examine the rotation a bit. Schilling and Wells are doing the job. Wakefield is coming back. Beckett can and has strung a few good outings together. And we can get something from Lester.

Schilling & Wells are only 2 reliable starters

Beckett hasnt won since July 24, an ERA over 8 in August

Wakefield was expected to come back August 27 but has been pushed back again because of back stiffness. Kyle Snyder as of now has been given the temp 5th starter slot

So you're upset that the Front Office decided to let Damon and Pedro go, but then you say they're too gutless to hold a fire sale. Care to make up your mind?

san diego might, as they were tryin to field a dodgers reunion team by trading for beltre at the deadline. if they were willing to even think of eating a good portion of beltre's ridiculous contract, there's no reason they wouldnt take on lowell's. my impression was the reason lowell wasnt traded to san diego earlier was that there wasnt anything san diego had that we wanted in return (other than payroll flexibility).

There's a difference between letting players walk to free agency, and holding a fire sale to receive what you can in return.

Besides, the FO was too gutless to re-sign Damon or Pedro. His stance is consistent.

Yeah???

"WELLL THAYD B FINE IF THEYZZ DIDN TRADE BRONSON ARROYO YO! THEYD BE SIK N ILL IF THEY KEPT THAT MONSTAH" - typical sox fan who blames everything that has happened this season on the one, insignificant transaction which occured this season.

I agree jsinger, and ive said it all along....theo didnt do anything to help this team at the deadline because inside he knew how good they really were.

They are cooked.

Come on is trading guys like Wells and Loretta really a damn fire sale. They are both guys who won't be here in 2007. This is not like selling off Manny or Ortiz.

LOL.....I agree again.

Why not finish the season with some of the players who WILL be here next year?

After watching that series against NYY I honestly don't want this team to make the playoffs because they are simply not that good. It would only be a tease and everyone will be pissed when they get swept much like last season. NY played the series like a playoff team, Boston played it like the bad team they are. (well not bad....but certainly not the way a playoff team would.)

actually we are a decent team, that is missing to many key pieces, mark my words in Tek never got injured, we would be in much better shape. Also Who would know that Josh Beckett would suck so badly?

come on. this is a significantly flawed team that has no business even reaching october. When you can't pitch and have consistent hitting you don't deserve to make it to the playoffs.

Whats with all the pissimism. This team is doing bad right now, but can still picxk up the wild card with some good play.

They have to pass 2 teams which frankly are better overall than them. The Sox don't have any starting pitching on a consistent basis. They have a pathetic bullpen outside of Papelbon and occasionally MDC. And there offense is streaky. Plus they can't beat AL teams over .500. Add that all together and I would say its a long shot they make it to the playoffs and they are better off getting a prospect for Wells before August 31st since the Sox will get nothing for him when he retires.

Your mind really can't operate on many levels.

so bascially the first four months of the season were meaningless. We are 6-16 since Tek went down. All im saying is that if Tek, wake and Nixon come back and we are still like 3-4games out of the wild card we have a chance.

Neither of those guys will be back for at least 2 weeks maybe 3. By then the season is practically over and the sox will be further out.

I heard wake was going to start on sunday, was that pushed back?
