The last time Varitek was on the DL with a broken elbow in 2001, the team went from contention to a fast spiral out of contention. He means so much to the pitchers game prep and calling the game.

It didn't help that both Pedro and Nomar were also injured for most of the year.

If healthy that team could have won the w.s, Pedro Varitek Manny and Nomar all in their prime it would have been excellent.

It certainly didn't help, but my recollection is that they remained competitive as Nomar was out. Pedro also acknowledged the devastating effect of Tek's injury on the pitching staff.

True but Pedro and Tek both went down at about the same time

Scott Hattieburg was god awful too. Tek is most definitely missed right now.

Pedro went down in June I believe and was lost for the season. When he went down so did the Red Sox hopes.

That team contended until about september 9-10th, but fell apart during a 2 weekend 6 game strech agaisnt the yanks

Yeah, Lowell hit into a DP. Oh well. How the HELL does Beckett give up 3 runs in 4 innings to these stiffs. The sox should have a comfortable lead right now. I have a feeling that the sox are in trouble tonight.

That's been Beckett's pattern the last couple of outings... good stuff for the first 3, maybe 4, innings... then the batters get a second look at his pitches and tee off on all of his fastballs.

Yeah, and speaking of that, how about the late (great) series coming up next weekend in Boston? Five games in 4 days at home vs NY. Doubleheader Friday :) , day games Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Five day weekend for me. That may be the season right there.

Anyway, I think the rotation for that series will be:

Johnson (game 1 of DH)

Lester (game 2 of DH)

Beckett

Schilling

Wells

Not sure about the Yanks.

Which also coincided with the appointment of Kerrigan as the manager. That might have been just as big a factor as Tek going down.

Javy Lopez factored largely into it.

That run for Beckett should be earned. You cannot assume a DP on Shealy's groundball. The fact that there were runners on third makes Beckett look bad. He should dominate the RoyAAAls.

From what I heard it could break 2 ways for the Yankees:

Ponson G1 (God I hope not)

Wang G2

RJ

Mussina

Wright

OR

They could have Ponson start the game prior to that series and push Lidle to G1 of the DH (Which would make more sense IMO)

Lidle G1

Wang G2

RJ

Mussina

Wright.

How long was baseball suspended during September 2001? A week (or 2)?
