Curt Schilling

13-3, 3.60 ERA

133 Ks, 18 Walks, 19 HRs

Curt Schilling will have history on his side Sunday when he takes the mound for the Boston Red Sox in the finale of their three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels at Fenway Park. Schilling (13-3, 3.60 ERA) is 4-0 with a 2.17 ERA in three career starts and five relief appearances against the Angels (53-50), who he also defeated in Game 1 of the 2004 ALDS at Angel Stadium. The 39-year-old right-hander is 8-0 with a 2.71 ERA in nine starts at Fenway this season while receiving an average of 7.14 runs of support in those outings.

"One of the luxuries of pitching for this offense is this offense," said Schilling after earning the win in Tuesday's 13-5 victory at Oakland despite allowing four runs in six innings. "I've made 22 starts and we're 17-5 when I've taken the ball. I'm proud of that." That Red Sox (62-40) offense racked up 15 hits Saturday and came back from a three-run eighth-inning deficit to win 7-6 in 11 innings, avoiding a third consecutive defeat. Designated hitter David Ortiz delivered the game-winning RBI single in the 11th and finished the day 4-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs. His 35 home runs and 99 RBIs both lead the majors.

"To have that guy on your team, to be able to take the pressure off your teammates and to be able to carry the team on his back is amazing," said Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon, who retired all six batters he faced in the ninth and 10th innings before Julian Tavarez pitched a scoreless 11th to earn the win. "He's the type of guy that enjoys that role. We're going to ride him a lot."

Ortiz has four walkoff hits to win games this season, three of them coming in extra innings. He is also 6-for-18 (.333) with a homer, two doubles and a triple against Sunday's Los Angeles starter, John Lackey (9-6, 2.89).

Lackey has won five of his last six starts, but has never defeated Boston. He is 0-4 with a 6.04 ERA -- his highest against any AL opponent -- in eight career starts against the Red Sox. Boston left fielder Manny Ramirez has enjoyed more success against Lackey than Ortiz, going 8-for-15 (.533) with four homers, two doubles, 10 RBIs, seven walks and a .682 on-base percentage versus the right-hander. Ramirez went 1-for-3 Saturday to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, his longest since 2003. He is batting .408 (20-for-49) during the run.

Lackey defeated the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Monday, allowing four runs -- two earned -- and five hits in eight innings of the Angels' 8-4 victory. He has thrown eight innings or more in three of his last four starts. "It's just nice we won," Lackey said. "You just go out there and try to make how many runs you get work." If Lackey can defeat the Red Sox for the first time Sunday, he will give the Angels their first series win at Boston since May 16-18, 2003. Including postseason, Los Angeles is 3-13 in its last 16 games at Fenway.

Saturday's loss dropped the Angels out of first place in the AL West, one-half game behind Oakland, which defeated Toronto 7-4. Los Angeles still owns a 19-6 record in July, best in the majors.

May the "little guy" unsung hero mojo continue today...

Sit. Curt looks good tonight. One bad pitch, and Izturis took advantage, but I like the way he looked that inning.
