What would we do with Tom Gordon??

thats why im a little confused about this. Im thinking theyd use him in the 8th/7th inning this year and have him be the closer/setup guy next year depending on whether Paps is in the rotation or not.

I was reading on that same site the Red Sox would consider moving Seanez and Tavarez to Colorado for a starting pitcher. If that was the case then we would have a need for Gordon. This would also mean the Phillies are moving Abreu and as long as its not the Yankees....I'm ok with that. I would really like to see Willy Mo get more starts.

I hope the Yankees get him so Ortiz can pummel him again, and Gordon can throw up in the bullpen before coming in to face Ortiz.

Talk about overkill, that rumor page mentions the Sox looking into: Ryan Shealy, Bobby Abreu, Tom Gordon, Julio Lugo, Jon Lieber, and Greg Maddux. I’d be surprised if any of those guys are on the team a week from now.

I would be ok with this. Opens up a spot for Pena/Kapler/Murphy? to get ABs and adds a top set-up man to the pen. Allows us to move Paps to the rotation next year. Papelbon/Gordon/Timlin/Delcarmen/Hansen/1 of Tavarez/Seanez would be a solid pen. Only thing is that Gordon and Timlin are old, eventually Delcarmen and Hansen would take over I suppose though.

If we could get Delucci in that deal, I would consider.

Why would the Phillies throw more in for a player who'd be a two month rental when they're out of the race?

They could just wait til the offseason or go after someone they can control longer.

Gordon would be a nice addition, but he wouldn't be happy as the set-up man, would he? I can't imagine he would.
Gordon wants to be a closer. That's what scared my Sox away from him. They tried him in that role when they had him. He stunk up the joint so badly they had to go to Shingo Takatsu, whose best pitch was a changeup.

I would be interested in Tom Gordon coming back to play for Boston. He saved 46 games for us with a 2.72 ERA in 1998, and as a setup guy, he's great. With a 2.83 ERA and 23 saves with two blown saves, he's not a huge downgrade from Papelbon, who's got 29 saves and a 0.53 ERA. Obviously Papelbon would still close, but if we got Gordon, we could pitch Timlin in the seventh and then give the ball over to Gordon, who's got extensive playoff experience under his belt and then turn to JonBon in the ninth inning for an all but guaranteed save. Starters would only have to pitch six innings apiece, keeping them well rested, and we'd only have to use people like Chris Hansen and Manny Delcarmen more than we should when a starter totally blows it.

Next year, Gordon could be a setup man again, closer if Papelbon switches over to a starter, or trade bait if we have a much bigger need. He would vastly improve our bullpen, and is more valuable than Trot, so I'm kind of perplexed at why Philadelphia would make this move (it's probably just wishful thinking) but, like I said, I would love it.

Haha, sorry for being picky, but it's Craig Hansen, not Chris. Oh, and yes, I agree. I'm banking on Papelbon sliding into the rotation next year. It would really make up for the old age in our rotation (minus Lester and Beckett). Imagine a rotation of Schilling, Beckett, Papelbon, Lester, Wake...it's amazing.

OT, but am I the only one here who has reservations about Papelbon as a starter? I don't think he has the off-speed pitch for it, and I think he may be better suited to remain in the closer's role.

Look at Curt Schilling, he has done fine with, Fastball and the Split. Plus Papelbon also has a wicked slider, and throws a breaking ball as well, he just doesnt have to throw all his pitches as closer.

Schilling also has better command than Papelbon, and has begun to throw more off speed pitches later in his career.

As for the "wicked slider", I haven't seen it with any consistency to show me it's an out pitch, and I've never seen him throw a breaking ball.

Papelbon should close' date=' why mess with a good thing? He might not be a great starter, but he's proven he can be a great closer.[/quote']

My thoughts exactly. The confidence I have in him in the 9th is worth more than him trying to be the #3 starter.

They can find another starter, they already have their closer.

This is basically what I said in my post (or maybe it was another I made...) I wouldn't mess with Papelbon as long as he's shutting down people like he is now, but if we got Tom Gordon, it might be beneficial to have JonBon throw six or seven innings per game, because Gordon is not one who blows many saves and it would really strengthen our rotation while keeping a solid closer in the bullpen.

Two threads, same discussion.

I think it would be a big mistake to skip the chance to see what Papelbon can do as a starter. SPs are just more valuable than RPs. And, if he crosses the threshold where his value as a starter doesn't match his value as a reliever, then he can just switch back.

Whoever said Papelbon's offspeed pitches won't support him as a SP is reading last year's scouting report. His splitter is both very good and consistent. And, the sliders I've seen have looked more than adequate. He's not throwing as many sliders because, well, he doesn't have to. As a SP, I'm sure he'd mix it up more.

Yeah I have friends who tell me that Paps has only two pitches, but clearly he has 3 good ones, and featured a curve ball in ST, that was o.k
