I'm not sure I see San Diego being interested in Mark Loretta. They have Green and Barfield who are both good players. Mark Loretta is not an upgrade over either of them. There is another team somewhere that we are missing. I have heard St. Louis in rumors but they may be more interested in Ron Belliard. Either way I think we could expect bullpen help out of a Loretta deal.

Barfield's played some 3B in the minors. They could probably shift him over there.

who do we give up for Lugo anyway?

Hopefully the Sox just throw in Abe Alavarez in the deal. He's wasting a roster spot in Triple A rotation. He's not living up to the hype/potential I remember him being tagged with back when he made his debut 2 years ago.

More speculation on my part: The St. Louis Cardinals have apparent interest in Rheal Cormier. If thats the case then I could see the Cardinals getting Cormier then shipping him to Boston for Mark Loretta. In a sense: Mark Loretta for Rheal Cormier

.....that would be a three team deal and then the Red Sox would make a move for Julio Lugo. Esentially that makes it a 4 team deal. I'm just trying to put pieces together.

Yeah lets take our offense from great to s*****, and add an average reliever ... LETS DO IT!

Rheal Cormier would be a great lefty setup man with Mike Timlin....and if we traded Mark Loretta...all signs point to adding Julio Lugo who is better offensively.

They can shove that deal. No freakin way. Theo had better hide his face if this is his big move.

Right but I didn't say anything about offense. Lugo is a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE downgrade in defense.

Lugo averages about 20 errors a season ... while Mark is around 5.

Lugo gets to about 100 more balls per year then Loretta does.

Loretta does fine if the ball isn't hit far from him, but if he has to go get a ball hit toward the middle, he won't get it.

Exactly, I made a huge stink about Lugo over Gonzalez but I will not say the same thing about Loretta. Mark Loretta has as much range as Mark Bellhorn did. He doesn't make errors at 2nd because he can't get to the difficult hits. You make less errors at 2nd anyways as compared to SS.

I dont know if this was posted yet.

The Sox are also closing in on a deal for Julio Lugo, according to sources with other teams. The holdup there is getting an answer on whether Lugo would move to 2B. The backup option for the Red Sox is Dustin Pedroia, not Ron Belliard.

The Yankees get an All Star outfielder with a .450 OBP, and the Red Sox back up plan is a minor leaguer, Pedroia.

Erm, this may be answered somewhere in this thread, but where is Mark Loretta going? I hope the answer to that question is not philly for Cormier. I don't want Cormier.

That would suck.

So will someone just give me a quick synopsis explaining why Lugo would be a nice addition to this team? I have seen and followed Lugo a little bit. He's been a dangerous SS over the past few years with some good pop. But is it really beneficial to move him over to 2B?

Does this portend a trade of Pedroia? Or, does it indicate that Alex Gonzalez will not be resigned for next season? I would be pretty comfortable with a plus defending 2B like Pedroia taking over moreso than acquiring a guy who is asking for 10 m a year.

Am I missing something? And please be honest, try to take the perspective of the FO if possible, talking about Lugo's PLUSSES and putting aside any affinity you may have for Alex Gonzo/Loretta/Pedroia. Thanks

Okay, a quick look at Lugo's numbers shows me a few things:

Lugo's career numbers are somewhat better than Gonzo's, but it wouldn't raise his production to the level of a great SS. His OBP is decent enough throughout his career, I guess; I don't know much about his defense.

The one thing I see that he has is speed. He had 39 SBs last year, and 18 this season through 70+ games. That's pretty good speed. Not that the sox are looking for speed specifically.

hopefully while I've been typing this, someone else has clearly elucidated why this deal is potentially a good one and why the sox keep going after Lugo every time trade discussion comes up.

Here is my theory. After thinking about this for awhile I think that Lugo isn't going to be our 2B or SS or a Red Sox at all for that matter. Something is missing. The White Sox rejected Crisp for Beuhlre, but what if we sent acquired Lugo and shipped him to the White Sox along with Crisp maybe or along with some other player(s) then turned around and used Loretta in a deal to acquire a CF and bring Pedroia up to play 2nd for the stretch run. It is the kind of deal Theo would do. Its a total shake up though. Thoughts?

Sox get Beurhle, Unknown CF, and Pedroia

Give up: Crisp, Lugo, Loretta and whatever it would take to get Lugo. I think to get lugo it would take a combination of prospects perhaps Murphy, Edgar Martinez and Jed Lowrie.

This could be misdirection and instead Theo Epstein is going to acquire Miguel Tejada instead of Julio Lugo to play 2nd. We will give Baltimore a couple low-A ball players and take on all of Tejada's salary

.....why not? The Yankees were able to do it.

Remember kids, huffing house hold cleaner is harmful for your brain. A couple low-a players will not get Tejada done. Tejada is not going to make this team win the division. Alex Gonzalez doing his wizardry in the field will help more than Tejada will. Our offense has been good to this point, our defense stellar, but our pitching has been suspect. Giving up a little of what we have to get the pitching might be what we need to raise that division flag on opening day next year. Give up crisp and loretta, get some pitching. Remember, Pedroia is ready now, Ellsbury will be ready a year from now. This is a Theo move all the way.

Well, Ksushi, I do appreciate your "we get Lugo to never use him" theory.

I also appreciate Schillingisthenatural's Tejada theory, although not to get him to play 2nd. That just wouldn't fly with Miggy.

While we're at the speculation stage, just a little mind game:

would you trade Miggy for Lugo and Crisp? Those are two good players who play key positions and immediately upgrade the O's. What do you think. Just for fun...

the Orioles would never do that, they have an offer for two cot controlled players in Santana and Aybar which we probaly couldnt match without trading one of our MLB young pitchers.
