I'm not advocating trading for Lugo. I believe we should sign him as a free agent.

Thats a possibility. Who do you think will cost more: Julio Lugo or Alex Gonzalez?

...my guess is Julio Lugo because teams are in love with offense. I think you can get Gonzalez for a three year deal where Julio Lugo will want four years. One thing that could make negotiations difficult with Alex Gonzalez...if he wins the Gold Glove this season.

This just doesn't make much sense. I think it's tough to compare the two based on range, arm, errors, ect.. There are a lot of things that we have seen gonzo do that are amazing. His instincts, quick hands, ect... far outweigh what we saw (at least me) from Lugo in the times that we have played against him. Lugo's not that much of an upgrade offenseivly, especially the way gonzo has been coming on lately after a terrible start to the year. We are getting much more than we expected out of Gonzo, so why try to move him?

SS is not our problem right now, we have the 2nd best record in the AL (majors mabey, but i have to look that up) behind the tigers--and that's with all the pitching injuries we have had. If we are going to change SS, let's move for O-cab--not the wife beater!

Just my $.02

I get what your saying but lets not fool ourselves into thinking Lugo is a small upgrade offensively from Gonzalez, because Lugo is a far superior hitter this season then Agon

Lugo, but Lugo is the far superior player when you compare the two.

yes Lugo is having a great season, just happens to be in his contract year. Gonzo's avg is currently hovering above .280, but he has been the better hitter (avg wise) since Memorial day wknd.

39 games since May 30, 48 for 147 (.340 avg)

7 Doubles, Triple, 6 HRs, 21 RBIs, 21 Runs, 7 Walks

Julio Lugo

47 games since May 30, 60 for 187 (.319 avg)

9 Doubles, Triple, 11 HRs, 22 RBIs, 39 Runs, 23 Walks, 8 SBs

From the Lugo article:

The length of the contract likely will be the sticking point in negotiations. The Rays might be interested in signing Lugo for three years at slightly less than $8 million per season, but their payroll likely would not allow them to sign him for five seasons at his desired price.

This would be Lugo’s breakout period in terms of a longterm contract so why should he settle for any hometown discount? I wonder if the 5 years would be too prohibitive for the Sox…probably. Until an extension gets signed I wouldn’t count anything out.

Far superior??

No, Miguel Tejada is far superior.....not Julio Lugo. I'll give the offense to Lugo (which by the way is still nothing to get excited about) but there is no way you can tell me he is better defensively.

The difference between the two in those aspects is about the same. I'll take Gonzalez for less money and less years so the Red Sox can find a real replacement when better options arise.

Is Michael Young a free agent after 2007??

Theo shys away from big contracts, years & money wise. The most he has offered has been to Varitek & Renteria at 4 years/$40 million. Papi stands out alone with his extension of 4 years/$52 million

.880 OPS out of a SS is nothing to get excited about? He is far and away the better offensive player. He's on pace to smack 25 HR's. Can you imagine this guy at Fenway? He'd be perfect fit there.

Gonzalez will probably want a three year deal. There's a real risk that Gonzalez could fall back into career norms. $3 million dollars is OK for a guy who catches the ball, but Gonzalez is going to want more. You can't justify paying $5 to $7 million to guy who's career OPS is below .700. According to most scouts, Lugo is a player that has a lot of range and a good arm. Throw in his well-above offense for his position, and you've got a complete SS.

Ok im talking about contracts of 4 years or more, $50 million or more. Not one of those players you mentioned exemplifies such a tall order especially Tavarez.

This is the first season Julio Lugo has had an OPS over .800 and the first time he has a chance to hit 20+ HR's. Clearly he is playing for a big contract but he is moving toward the wrong side of 30. This is the prime of his career so would you want to sign him until his mid-30s?? Thats crazy. Julio Lugo looks too much like Edgar Renteria.

....however, as I said above....I want Michael Young

What?

Edgar Renteria looked slow, and shied away from the big spotlight. Lugo is a speed-burner, and is a high energy guy who'd fit into the bright lights of Fenway. If he gets a four year deal, he'd be 34 when his contract expires. That's old, but it's not to the point where you'd expect a total collapse.

I guess Clement's $9 million a year contract isn't a "tall order."

Every single one of those contracts are sizable. Especially Tavarez, who is one of the highest paid middle relievers in baseball.

Lugo wouldn't fit into an albatrostic contract either. Four years at eight million per, isn't a huge contract. It fits in nicely to the other ones Theo has offered.

Other ones:

Contreras (4 years $32 million)

Pavano (4 years $40 million)

Martinez (3 years $40 million)

Damon (4 years $40 million)

I'm sure that's not it, but Theo offers long-term contracts.

Add me to the list of people who like Julio Lugo.

I know this won't happen, but if the Sox traded Pedroia at the deadline for an arm I'd sign Lugo as a second baseman with that bat in a heartbeat.

I'd say Lugo reminds me of Orlando Cabrera more than Edgar Renteria... Lugo is probably more speed/less power compared to Orlando.

I agree with folks who don't like the asking price for him trade wise though. Alex Gonzalez is doing a fine job at shortstop defensively, and while I thought he'd be hitting better (silly me), he's doing OK with the bat.

This is the latest rumor on Julio Lugo from Will Carroll at BP

The Sox are closing in on a deal for Julio Lugo, according to sources with other teams. The holdup there is getting an answer on whether Lugo would move to 2B. The backup option for the Red Sox is Dustin Pedroia[/Quote]

Mark Loretta may be changing jerseys before Monday if any of this works out.

Posted
Lugo is an exciting player. He can hit pretty well and has a decent glove (downgrade from Loretta), but he is very fast. He would fit well in a #2 spot in the lineup, which is perfect.
Posted
That would be wild if Lugo ended up at 2B and we get a good bull pen guy like Linebrink for Loretta.

thats exactly what i was thinking, but the loretta in a deal for Linebrink would be bigger I think, to expand to 3-4 teams maybe.

Posted
I DONT see the point.

Why would you mess with the best defensive infield in the game?

And if we get Lugo where will A-Rod play?

Its foolish.

Because Lugo is better then Loretta both offensively and defensively.

Loretta is not the strong link in our infield. He has very limited range, and average hands. He turns the DP great.

Lugo's vorp' date=' 32.7, is the highest on Tampa. I don't know Mark Loretta's but it is about 20 points less.[/quote']

Bingo.

Adding Lugo to the Red Sox is probably adding about 1 to 2 more wins. Adding Linebrink also boosts those chances.
