Wakefield welcomes Royals to Fenway

Kansas City (32-59) at Boston (54-36), 7:05 p.m. ET

By Howard Kussoy / MLB.com

Having lost three of four games to the Oakland A's at home and seven of their last 11, the Red Sox will look to regain their first-place form as the American League Central's last-place team, the Kansas City Royals, arrives at Fenway Park for a three-game set

Taking the mound in Monday night's opener will be knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, who was originally slated to pitch on Sunday, but was pushed back a day because of a sore back. Right-hander Luke Hudson will start for the Royals.

"He would've pitched on Sunday, but it makes sense," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "It gives him an extra day [of rest] the next time out. With the All-Star break, you have the ability to move a guy back, and I just didn't see why we shouldn't."

Wakefield has not lost a decision since June 15 and has earned wins in three out of his last four starts. Wakefield, who often toiled with little run support early in the season, has benefitted from at least eight Red Sox runs in each of his last four starts, including three double-digit efforts.

In his last outing, Wakefield allowed four runs and four hits over five innings in a win against Tampa Bay.

Wakefield is 3-3 with a 3.11 ERA at home this season and 10-5 lifetime against Kansas City with a 3.56 ERA.

I wonder what Minky's and Graf's reaction will be like.

Doug is really unhappy with Theo and Larry. Don't blame him, Sox front office royally ripped him off (no pun intended).

Red Sox: Doug, can we borrow the ball for a limited amount of time?

Doug (out of the goodness of his heart): Sure

Red Sox: Hehehe, ours now bitch :harhar: , here HOF, it's all yours now.

Doug: Jerks...

what brings a boo on Doug M----------

Is it comfortable living under a rock?

Tony G shouldn't, and probably won't, get booed. He was a big contributor down the stretch last season.

They should all catch hell for having last names like that. Tony G should get a little (sarcastic) cheer for last year but Dougie gets a boo for acting like a dick.

Like I said, neither should get booed. Minky was one of the 25.

Apparently Sanders is scratched with Emil Brown in his place.

He was already on his way after his turn when the ball kicked off the wall right to DeJesus. That wasn't bad baserunning, just an unfortunate bounce.

Nice start for Wake. We could use a deep outing here with Lester pitching tomorrow.

Lester should go at least 6 innings, hopefully more, against a weak Royals lineup. But then again, the A's lineup is worse.

Statistically, maybe. But at least the A's have guys like Kotsay, Thomas, and Swisher.

When reggie Sanders is your biggest offensive threat, your lineup sucks.

The A's lineup is significantly better than the stats show. They have some solid players having crappy seasons.

As we say this, Wake's pitching around the Royals like they're the '27 Yankees.
