John (Portland, ME)

Does Theo have a trade up his sleeve to help fix the end of the rotation and middle relief?

JERRY CRASNICK

John,Let's put it this way: I've talked to a bunch of front office people the last few days, and they're all expecting Theo to do something big. I'm not quite sure what that is, but he's got a big move or two in his sights -- almost certainly to upgrade the pitching.

I just saw this on the ESPN Sportsnation chat, pretty interesting...(I didn't ask the question).

I will just speculate on something "big" i can see Theo doing:

1. Trading Rudy Seanez David Murphy to Padres for one of their good starters, like Chris Young or Woody Williams

2. Something in the way of prospects not named Lester or Hansen to the Phillies for Cory Lidle

I was watching baseball tonight and the philies are going to offer Lieber and Lidle in a week or so. I wouldnt mind lidle but can he pitch in the AL? I would much rather have Lieber. not a bad pitcher and has experience in the AL.

Acquiring Lidle would not be considered a big move.

and acquiring Woody Williams would be considered an act of charity.:thumbdown

Woody's numbers don't look that bad, and acquiring Lidle for a number 5 starter is not a small move. There are only a couple really big pitchers out there and I do not think we will be picking up an ace.

Woody's #s this year

W-L ERA K Walks WHIP

4-1 3.08 33 14 1.23

I'd love to see a poll of TalkSox members on whether a. acquiring Lidle is a big move, and b. whether taking Woody Williams would not be charity by the Sox.

not if it is a big move, but these are possible moves, there will not be any Red Sox pitching blockbusters, I'm just saying moves, not blockbusters, and I cannot imagine that you think a Kyle Snyder/Jason Johnson platoon is better than Woody Williams or Cory Lidle

No, but I think they'd be better off waiting for Clement and/or Wells.

Going back to Lieber, I would love to see him, a #2 starter even, and he showed not only can he succeed in the AL, but can thrive in pressure situations, I.E. ALCS Game 2 in 2004, and basically that whole season in 2004. If we can get him, do it, but it likely will not be cheap. See what the offer is.

Lieber  In the NL he's getting killed, a 5.56 ERA with only 3 wins (when you only have 3 wins this far into the season, you can blame yourself). Bring him to the AL East? What are you smoking? I don't care if he did well 2 years ago with the Yankees...he's 36 years old and he's sucking in the national league at the PRESENT.

Keep Lieber and Lidle away from Fenway, and the analyst was talking about a big move...meaning like a Smoltz or Abreu caliber player. Lidle and Lieber for a B-level prospect isn't a big move. It will definitely be interesting to see what Theo does.

by the way, in my original post I was aiming at getting Young, I just threw Woody in as a possibility

Figured, Young would be a welcome addition. Anyone to get Johnson/Snyder out of here. And don't give me that Snyder is good ********, he sucks royal dick.

Oh, I think people are getting their hopes up. Anyone who thinks David Murphy and Seanez can get us Chris Young is living in high hope heaven.

Honestly, I've seen little to your analysis of the game to put much credence into what you think. Everyone here knows we need pitching, and your motives here are very evident. You are just saying whatever you think will piss on the parade the most. You'll grow up eventually and realize that is a waste of time. Until then, you won't be welcome.

Theo won't be making any big moves, that's what I'm trying to say. There isn't much available .
Because Theo is dead set against trying to win another WS?

Listen this is like last year. Alot of talk and no action yet. My guess is we're going to pick up a guy no one has said yet. Idk why but Westbrook just seems to me a guy we'are going to have sometime soon.

Theo is unlikely to make a big move because there are so many contenders that the price for an available player is high. Also, the players that seem to be available are aging players, usually about to be free agents. Abreu would cost way too much in both prospects and money. Any decent pitcher, starting or relieving, to hit the market is going to be bid on by 5 or 6 teams at least.

If Theo does make a big move I wouldn't be surprised to see a major league regular as a part of it.

A big move doesn't mean it has to be a big name. Doesn't anyone think that filling the hole in our rotation would be a big move? Also remember that the pitcher we need is not a #1 or #2 ... we have those spots filled. If you can get a #3 calibur guy I think thats a big move, but even getting a #4 guy who can at least give us a chance win would be big enough for me.

Exactly...big moves can be the least talked about if it affects your organization in the right way.

thank you, yes.

If we just get a solid guy in the 4 or 5 spot that will keep us in games consistenly, that is a big move, even if it is Woody Williams, Cory Lidle, or someone we haven't talked about yet

The last "big" move that Theo made prior to the Beckett deal was when he brought in OCab...and that was "big" at the time because of who we gave up, not who we brought in. There was only one superstar involved in that deal and it was Nomar and we were the one's giving him up, not on the receiving end. Just goes to show that a "big" deal doesn't need to involve marquee, front line players coming to Boston. Look how that deal worked out for us.
