It could be part of some future plan to move Manny out of here, just speculation: Pena, Crisp & Abreu.

Kind of a bummer for Pena though, if our outfield is Abreu, Crisp and Manny.

Not if Pena is the first baseman

I found this on redsox.com which refers to the no trade protection resulting from Tek‘s 2004 contract.

Interesting. It's worded in a way that makes it sound like it isn't binding though. We'll have to see what happens.

What about Youk? or Lowell?

Youk could play third again, but are we assuming Lowell wouldn't be on the team later?

Next year or later this year?

After his contract is up after 2007, I wouldn't think Lowell would be re-signed by the Red Sox.

Its been reported on NESN and weei that the Sox were met with Wily Mo Pena under-performing at 1st base. Terry Francona has now said we will see him platoon with Trot, and sometimes give days off for Coco, Manny and Ortiz

It would be nice to see Pena in a full time slot.

Why won't he play first?

He has been underperforming at 1st base in the Sox's eyes. Its not that he doesnt want to, he's just not giving management confidence that he'll even be average with the glove in that position

It will not happen this season. He'll probably need to play winter ball at 1B and get some intensive instruction in ST, maybe play a handful of games there next season, play winterball after '07 and after ST '08 he should be ready at 1B. He's not ready now, and Theo needs a backup for Youk.

Source? Where are you hearing that the Sox are deadset on him being the next 1st baseman? All I heard was that they were going to try him out there during his rehab, didnt go so well

What I do know, is that Loretta currently holds the position as backup 1st baseman. So its not like they cant give Youkilis any days off

I am not saying that they are dead set on it. I think there has been enough evidence indicating that they are strongly considering it. When they first got him in the trade, Theo spoke about the possibility of him learning 1B, but cautioned that they didn't expect that to happen right away. Then they took the opportunity of his rehab for to take some work at 1B. Why do you think they had him work at 1B? They don't think much of him in the OF, and he would be a nice power stick at 1B. Lowell will not be re-signed after '07, so Youk will move back to 3B. That leaves 1B open.

The back page of today's NY Post has both the yanks and the Mets in hot pursuit of Abreau. The Yanks are also interested in reacquiring Gordon and Lieber.

St. Paul Pioneer Press: Tigers Close To Abreu Deal

I can't determine who actually wrote this, but it is a published report in the St. Paul Pioneer Press. It's called Don't Print That and has a smattering of rumors from various sports.

The baseball notes:

"A little birdie says the first-place Detroit Tigers are close to a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies for right fielder Bobby Abreu. The Guardians, in town to play the Twins, are talking about trading Aaron Boone to the Los Angeles Dodgers."

We've all heard of the Tigers' interest in Abreu, so we'll have to see what comes of that rumor. As far as Aaron Boone, I can't fathom why the Dodgers would want to actually give up a player or cash to acquire the worst third baseman in baseball. I think Bill Mueller on crutches could outhit Boone.

Hmmm...Detroit was considered to be the frontrunner in the Soriano sweepstakes...I wonder if pulling Abreu would negate that? If they somehow nailed both...I think we've got a new odds on favorite if their young pitching can hold up...

If you have to pick up his option hes not worth it unless the phillies take a bad contract(Matt Clement) in return. 31 million over the next 2 years plus whatever he has left on his contract this year. His home run power has disapeared since last years all star break. I think he's hit 15 home runs in a full year since then.

In the off season you can get carlos lee for the same average annual salary, maybe less. It would take 2 extra years on the contract but also not cost any prospects, except the draft pick we'd lose. Or you could spend the money on a pitcher.

sorry, I do not see Bobby Abreu coming to Boston, and I might be wrong, but we are not a serious contender in this sweepstakes in my opinion.

I think he will head either to Detroit or New York

The money he wants in addition is a real problem. The one team who can take on that contract without any real issues is the Yankees and with Gary Sheffield leaving after the season....it could happen. I don't think the Yanks have much to give up for Abreu but the financial relief may be enough.

I guess the Red Sox are still interested in Bobby Abreu with a few other teams. At first I didn't understand why the Red Sox would go after a bat when they have starting pitching issues. Now that Wells and Wakefield will be back...the rotation is set. The Red Sox will even have Matt Clement at some point to give us depth if someone else gets injured.

A lot of people mention Trot Nixon in trade rumors. If the Philadelphia Phillies want MLB ready players in return and financial relief...why not Coco Crisp?? He is much cheaper than Abreu and is under contract, plus he is younger. If the Red Sox made a move along those lines for Abreu then our outfield this season could be Ramirez, Abreu, and Nixon with Pena taking Nixon's place next season. One of my issues with Coco Crisp is that I really feel Jacoby Ellsbury is not THAT far away and he should be our CF of the future.

Coco Crisp for Bobby Abreu??

we would then have a slower outfield than my over 35 drunk league softball team

coco is the leadoff hitter and cf of the future and if we're going to spend 15M per on a ballplayer lets hope its a starting pitcher

Jayson Stark is reporting that Yankees will acquire Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle for a bag of dirt (CJ Henry, Steven White). A great quote off of rotoworld:

In taking Abreu's contract, the Yankees would be employing about $100 million more in talent than any other team in baseball. If they can win under those circumstances, well, Joe Torre really must be a genius.[/Quote]

If this is true... woohoo go Theo!! Lets drive that price up

Will Carroll, bp

Ken Rosenthal broke the news that the Yankees are ready to deal for Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle. He also got that the Red Sox were attempting to get Abreu as well, or at least raise the price for their rivals. Rosenthal is the rock star of the deadline. I've learned that the Yankees' latest offer was Eric Duncan and Tyler Clippard, plus one low-minors player. Due to Boston's involvement, this probably isn't the final offer, but we don't know what the Red Sox are offering. If a dam near you ever springs a leak, call Theo Epstein--he's apparently the master at plugging leaks.

Some insight why the Abreu deal didn’t work for Boston.

Unlike the Yanks, who assumed all of Abreu's remaining salary this year and next, the Sox were unwilling to do so since taking on Abreu's money next year -- a scheduled $16 million -- would have sent the Sox over the luxury-tax threshold. With a 40-percent penalty for going over the tax a second time, Abreu's actual cost would have been approximately $23 million in 2007, a number they found too high.

In return for having the Phils take some of Abreu's money back, Boston actually offered a better group of prospects than did the Yankees. But in the end, it was more important for general manager Pat Gillick to rid himself of Abreu's money altogether, making the Yanks' offer more attractive.
